Amazes me that none of the folks I watch use a hammock (like a Hennesey). No more sleeping on rocks unless you decide you're going to sleep in a field somewhere (use your trekking poles to set it as a bivy type shelter). A thin, very lightweight insulation pad and my badlands sleeping bag work great. Going in really cold weather? Use an under quilt with it. Great night sleep every night.
@@haroldbleemel8537 I've looked at them, but only pictures. To me it still looks like it's in the shape of a banana. I've only seen one hammock design that laid truly flat and it had terrible reviews (ie, a novelty).
@@haroldbleemel8537 If it's already banana shaped with no one in them, how is it going to flatten out with 180 lbs laying in it? The price doesn't make me want to just test it out on my own LOL.
I went to the zenbivy light quilt/sheet/pad this year. Game changer! You should check it out. Had the 10° quilt down to 20° F this past April. Never slept better. Have any of you tried Zen? I like the SeatoSummit Aeros ultralite delux pillow
I am a huge fan of the hammock setup with an under quilt and whatever sleeping bag you want. I’m not sleeping on the ground if I can help it! I am a huge fan of the Kammock Mantis UL. Rain, no problem, steep mountainside, no problem.. just need 2 trees roughly 12-15 feet apart. Takes just a couple minutes to get the whole thing set up and ready to sleep. Been in some absolute gulley washers and never even got damp.
I’m really quite surprised with all of the money y’all have invested you haven’t bought a western mountaineering or feathered friends sleeping bag. Those two brands are by far and away the best.
That Agnus 3in1 look interesting! Have you checked the The North Face One Bag? Similar concept and temperature range at half the price. No pillow keeper tho.
Over 40 years of hunting and sleeping on everything you could imagine. I use 11' onewind hammock and 12' rainfly with under quilt now. I use a body quilt as a blanket. Lightweight backpack system. Sleep like a baby now. No ground dwelling anymore
That combo setup looks sweet. I've tried different things myself, and I am still looking for the right setup. I have the klymit insulated air pad, and I also bought the fitted sheet for it to increase the R value. It also has a pillow pocket, so it keeps my air pillow in place. It's the sleeping bag I am having trouble with. I've tried many, and you know how that process goes. Blowing out zippers, being cold, etc. I also roll around a lot and am a side sleeper, so that sidewinder bag has my attention. Kinda seems like that combo setup would benefit me a lot. Thanks for showing the different setups. This is very helpful.
I don't know if y'all have thought about it, but a good hack for your pillow sliding around is just as simply get some velcro straps that you can attach to the back of your pillow and attached to your pad. That seems to work really really well
Noticing now that the big Agnes system is discontinued only after a year or two, any reason you guys know of? Or still worth buying while some retailers still have the bags in stock?!
The right quilt Is great. Zenbivy probably has the best over all system but the cost is pretty premium. I personally don't care for pads that don't allow me to sleep on my side comfortably so it has to be a wide pad. I am currently using a klymat lux and hate it. It will be getting replaced this year
I have been running a Nemo Tango Solo for a few years in the backcountry and the Big Agnes looks way better. It's the perfect evolution of the same concept, but it addresses some shortcomings with my Nemo. I'm never a fan of the top "quilt" letting air in around the bottom so the zipper on the quilt portion of the Lost Ranger looks awesome. Definitely buying one for this year. I have also loved my Big Agnes QCore pad. Basically an older version of the BA Rapide. Well worth the little bit of added weight. Thanks for this information and good luck this year everyone!
Thermarest compressible pillows. Been through a lot of the blow up pillows, they’re just not comfortable. Thermarest feels the most like a regular pillow and packs kinda small and lightweight. Get the regular size. Not the small, too small and not enough stuffing
Nice review / info. That Big Agnes 3 in 1 system looks interesting. Never saw this until you folks put it up. I use a Canadian forces modular sleep system . Cotton sheet inner bag. Good for early season. Down inner good to - 15 deg c . And an outter bag down also -15 deg c. All together good to -40c or -40f. Comes with compression bag about 10 lbs. Used about $250cnd. I use them as a top quilt these days in my hammock with a -35deg c. Underquilt. My days of sleeping in the dirt are long over. Sleeping easily 8 hours unless woken by an alarm. 😅 i like your coverage of this subject and will be checking out more of your vids. Thanks.
wow that new BA bag is amazing I have a whisky river 0 degree and love it it has the pillow holder and pad retainer way better than the guys I hunt with but its a pretty bulky bag. I also would like going to the BA sleep pad. you guys got it figured out super light weight. most my weight is going to be in food and knifes hahah. every year i try to inprove a little this year was new rain gear and sissy sticks.
