Great review really like what you’re doing. I’m currently running a Kelty late start 2 right around 4 pounds and it’s under $200 worked Great last trip I had it on in September!

There are a lot of trekking pole tents out there. As this is made for the first time hunter trying to get into this for the first time I recommend that they start with a freestanding tent. Just my opinion.

Hey Guys. I'm with Dan on the sleeping pads. That's why I went with the Klymit V Luxe Extra Wide. The dimensions of it are 76"L x 30"W x 3" Thick. With an Insulation R value of 4.4. The only draw back is that it weighs right around 2 pounds. It's a bit heavier than some, but for the width and R value, I'll take it. I have 2 sleeping bags that I use. One is a down filled bag that I've had for 30+ years and it's still doing it's job. The other Bag is a Legend Sports Featherlite 0 degree synthetic filled bag. It only weighs about 1 1/2 pounds. I'm still searching for the tent that I eventually use on every trip.

Just so you know, that klymit pad has an ASTM tested r value of 1.9. The 4.4 was klymit’s “estimate”.

@bjlutrus3354 Hello. Where can I find that info? I've never once had an issue using it. But, I'm not using it when temps are below freezing on a regular basis, either.

I am guessing that the rating of 1.9 is without a sleeping bag...there is no insulation in between the baffles. The idea is that all the insulation you would normally compress and will be no help will fill those voids and create the 4.4 r that Klymit refuses to. That is the idea behind some of the skeletonized pads you see.

@ELKSHAPEGEAR That makes sense. If you're getting a sleeping pad that has an insulation R-value, you're most likely using a sleeping bag of some kind to go with it. You would think they would have to state that in the description of the sleeping pad, though.

I run a Nemo flyer and I like it for size price and comfort if i was getting another I'd probably get the nemo Longbow XL wide as I'm more Tyler's size.

Hey long time watcher here. I noticed you didn’t have one of the cheapest durable options on here wondering if you have tested one before. It’s the military therm a rest self inflating pad. I’ve found some listings online claim it has an r value in the 4s and I’ve seen them sell for $20-$30.

Those are durable and cheap. I have used similar pads in the past but they are heaver more bulky and not as comfortable as a lot of other pads IMO.

The problem with cheap pads like the Klymmit is the way they do their baffles. They’re just heat pressed together so those flat spots really don’t have any insulation

Correct. However your sleeping bag will fill those voids and help with insulation.

Forceatt is a great budget tent been in many storms in mine has 2 vestibule like the msr but.....mine was 70 bucks lol

Budget is relative. If you’re going to try backcountry hunting or even just backpacking you’re going to need to spend the money. It sucks maybe but cheap gear is going to fail. Best case scenario it leaves you very uncomfortable and miserable, makes you want to give up.

@@drewolm if you’re looking for a true budget build for back country, military surplus from the last 10 years is your best friend. You can get a two sleeping bag and baby sleep system for around $120 that will keep you warm below zero… Speaking from experience.

For sure. Different people all sleep differently. almost all bags use the same rating system so if you are comparing different bags you can compare apples to apples. The rating is just a reference. For example dan will use a 0 degree bag and be comfortable in the same conditions that Tyler uses a 20 degree bag and is also comfortable. A general rool of thumb is to expect to stay warm 10-20 degrees warmer then the bag is rated for. There are also a lot of things that you can do to stay warm in you sleeping bag but that is a whole other topic.

I agree but some things you have to learn for yourself. I would totally recommend getting the best system you can afford. But I also know what its like to try and do thing on a budget. One cold night will make the price totally worth it...right?

Those are defiantly viable options. I run a Marmot Lime light 3p double vestibule as I like the extra space for gear and cheaper than your choices but it is heavier. There is no free lunch when trying to save weight as the cost goes up. Your best bet is get yourself in Elk-Shape, then weight isn't as big of concern. My pack is usually right at 38 to 40lbs plus your bow or rifle.
