For those who know me well, it's no surprise that I love the Soldano sound so much. It's basically the guitar tone that made me want to design guitar effects from the beginning! Well... this one and a cranked vintage Marshall Plexi. Last year I had a SLO-100 for while that Mike Soldano was letting me borrow. I thought it couldn't get any better than that. I was wrong - Mike and the Soldano team have done it even better here with the SLO-30! Normally folks love the high gain distortion tones in these amps, and don't get me wrong - they ARE fantastic. However, for my style it's the lower gain stuff that I use quite often personally and this amp checks off that box like few other amps do.

Okay, I was about to comment on how everyone’s idea of good low gain tones seem to always be *way* more distortion than I ever use, but then you did get to an actual low gain tone, haha

@@darwinsaye yeah I actually really loved the clean sounds, and while I know the dirt sounds great I don't think it translated as well as it could have here, although I bet that changes when I change my listening set up.

I am absolutely not surprised that a guy who likes cats and telecaster guitars,l is a huge fan of a monster of high Gain amp 😂 no no not at all !! 😇 I am impressed by what this amp can do in Low Gain setup. Anyway my favorite legendary amp is the Mesa Boogie Mark IIc+. Most of the music albums I liked as a kid had some tones from this amp.

My friend/bandmate of 10+ years, Danny (who’s since passed) had a slo100 back in the day. This was at a time when we all thought that Mesa and Marshall were the “top of the heap”. He comes in with this head one day and it was just harmonically rich and full on a level we’d never experienced. Not only that but it was tolexed in snake skin...just unreal in every way. It was like opening a door to a whole new world of tube amp possibilities to me...RIP Danny ✌️

Great story and what taste Danny must have had. RIP Danny. I had one too many years ago - snakeskin was amazing, then I mistakenly got into the idea I didn’t play enough to warrant keeping it and bought a boutique small amp - many amps later still missing that soldano qualities - so pleased these are available again, can’t wait to demo one. My bank manager will not thank me for seeing this video!! Stay safe and keep playing!!

Yeah, a lot of people thought the same back in the day but the SLO30 really is not that bad of a value when you consider how good the amp is in so many genres, you could even say that the Mesa Rectifier xnd the 5150, 6505, EVH amps wouldn't even exist without this amp!

@@claesvanoldenphatt9972 that's the problem, everyone seems to make a clone or borrow from the SLO. Too bad Mike never got a chance to become a bigger shop before he created the SLO, otherwise he could have benefitted from the economy of scale Mesa and Peavey did when they created the rectos and 5150's respectively.

If your going the 3K route Koch amps makes that Greg amp w great reverb and harmonic trem and a great tube saturation circuit OTS That's definitely a contender and seems much more for the money

Not a fan of the Tele or the Les Paul,great guitars just not my fit, but I have to say the tone was excellent for both of them. Hands down this is one of the best amps on the planet. If the Soldano and The Marshall Plexi had a child it would be my favorite amp and that is the EVH 5150 model 3 el-34 50 watt head black and gold edition.

Oh man that clean channel is so nice even on the iPhone speaker . If you get a chance to grab the new VHT D-Fifty it’s very nice and very similar to this . This SLO is very impressive thanks ❤️

For me, the player that immediately comes to mind when people talk about Soldano is Warren Haynes. His tone is awesome and curiously he is not a high gain player.

Mark Knopfler used that amp to produce some incredible tones on the low key but tasteful On Every Street album. Some of his finest ever in my opinion.

This amp just screams iconic 80s hard rock/metal tones for me. When I think of the SLO my mind is immediately drawn to the sound of guys like Warren Demartini and George Lynch. Time to start saving my pennies, I need this amp in my life. In modern times the 30 watt version just seems more practical than the big boy pants 100w version. I'm already going to have to use an attenuator at home and at most gigs anyways, why not be able to crank the amp more and rely on the attenuator less? That's my thought process at least. Cheers!

Johnny Moraes Guitar George used a solid state Randal for tooth and nail. But for under lock and key and back for the attack he used a Marshall plexi. Didn’t use the soldano until he was recording lynch mob which he he could have blended with the Marshall. I know he borrowed the SLO from Warren Demartini and Lynch might have borrowed it for too long haha.

On my Helix (DONT SHOOT PEOPLE). The SLO 100 Clean channel driven at 7-8 gain is my favourite amp. I use no other amp. Sadly the SLO30 in Aus is close to 5000 dollars. But I’d love this with a 212 vertical.

On Earth? We're comparing with amps on other planets? It sounds great. If it's a great pedal platform then yep, I'm in. Hard to beat the Bravado, I reckons (not that I've ever played one but it seems amazing) or my personal fave, the Laney Lionheart LT20 - that amp never met a pedal it didn't like. Fave amp I've ever had in my possession (albeit briefly): 1988-89 JCM800 50W Combo. Amazing amp. Cool video. I just got my Wampler Paisley Drive Deluxe. Cool pedal! Now I gots a Wampler dirt trinity: Tumnus, Paisley Deluxe, and Velvet Fuzz. Cool pedals!

@@SharpEdgeStandardOfficial this statement refers only to myself as a player. I hear tons of people with great and fat bridge singlecoil tones. For me, the problem is mainly the balance between neck and bridge position. But this is just my personal taste.

Actually, Mike bailed out of the Jet City agreement because they were changing his design before going to production. It’s no more Soldano then a Dual Rev or 5150 is.

Soldano999 I have the JCA22H. A reputable amp tech went through it all and reflowed a few solder joints then retubed it with JJ’s. It’s a beast. I have it going through an old TubeWorks 212 loaded with Eminence speakers.

Even better, get a Randall RM pre amp or the RM50 or 100 head and buy a Synergy SLO module or have one modified by Jaded Faith mods or Salvation mods. I personally have a Randall RM100 head loaded with a Jaded Faith SLO module, and it nails this same tone to the T. It made me trade off my Soldano Hotrod 100+ head ,it is that good. Plus my friend had a Jetcity 20 watter mini head and that thing got destroyed in tone by a Krank Rev Jr Pro 20 Watt head with 6L6's.

Sold... if Normal channel clean and crunch mode were footswitchable or if clean channel crunch mode overlapped a bit with the drive channel. Edit: Though listening again, the drive channel can give some milder goods at 9:00ish.

The versatility is unreal. I can't name that many amps that have such a clean, a crunch AND highgain sound while just on the edge between classic and modern. It doesn't get better than this.

@@JMPRocker Mezzabarba MZero has a sweet clean channel and Bogner Uberschall channel 1 is not bad for a clean channel. Best cleans to me would be Fender clean channel or the Roland Jazz Chorus amps.

The Bogner ecstasy xtc Is incredibly versatile and good sounding! The clean channel Is very fender like , the second channel goes from Marshall style clean/breakup to classic Marshall overdrive, and third channel goes from hard rock crunch to full on high gain! Plus have a great boost!

On other videos they act like the bright switch only works on the normal channel. But Brian is demo-ing it here as working on the overdrive channel as well. Does anyone know if the bright switch works on both channels or not?

The original Russian 6P3S-E tubes were the first Sovtek's, and had silver letters that said "Sovtek 5881." The new production are a copy and not as good. You can get the originals on eBay and they are WAY BETTER than the new production in every way! Ask the Hi-Fi guys! Also, with the lower plate voltage (325?) you can underbias the tubes as that voltage is right where EVH's Marshall went when variac'd down to 87~90v! Watch Mike's EVH Marshall video for proof! Anyways, enjoy and thanks for all you do!

Wow, that is some rich tone. Maybe I need to stop messing around with all these distortion and OD pedals and invest in an amp like this. I had thought my next amp would be a plexi, but now I think this might be even better and still pull off those tones.

This amp sounds, well, to my ears, perfect. Excellent video Brian - and because you know sound and tone, you knew to show us the inbetween tones. I love that tele -and I enjoyed your chicken pickin stuff which sounded great! You are the KING of upper-mid and HF management in your pedals. I can hear the hours you spent giving them a sweet and smooth tone and eliminating the ice pick. Kudos to you.

I hope I'm not the only one who doesn't really think "metal chug-chug" when talking about Soldano's. What immediately comes to my mind is the mighty tone of the mighty Warren Haynes. He's the reason I bought a Wampler SLOstortion about 10 years ago (which I still have and use daily). Warren's tone is one of the joys of life

Michael Houser. Founding lead guitar player for widespread panic got his sound from slo100. Dude killed it with the clean channel as well.. very unique country inspired rock and roll playin. The best tone I ever had was a Mesa Boogie V twin pedal running through an old peavey bandit. That combination of circuitry was amazing! But IMO, the best tone ever is the Mesa Boogie Mark IV. Plexi's are amazing too though.

@@billgreen3629 haha that last sentence kills me...how many times have I played on something that I like better than my own, and I have had access to everything from Dumble and Trainwreck, 3x10 Bandmaster... I always just went back to a Super reverb. The Pro reverbs and Vibroluxe are great but picking 1 amp is impossible, we play in our houses and we also play out, and playing inside sometimes the best amp is an old Alamo.

@@billgreen3629 i paid $210 USD for the v twin back in about 2001 or 2002. I could probably get $350 for it now. The thing is amazing. I have a 6505+ combo and although it sounds good, the vtwin straight into the power amp of it sounds even better. Hey, what can i say... it's a boogie.

There is a clarity, note/string separation, and richness across the entire frequency range in the tone of that Amp that makes it my favorite as well. It's amazing that some modern Modelers and plugins (Neural) can emulate its sound so well. Thanks

I love these amps since i first tried the SLO setting on my modelling amp. Perfect clean, perfect drive, unperfect price.

Same pre amp circuit as my JCA 22H or 50 or HR50+ or SLO 100 or so on n so on. Just minor component value changes n features.

I’ve used Soldano amps for year’s and all I can say is that they make one of the most reliable and dependable amps out there. Nice demo🎸🎶

My first amp was placing my $27 Kingston electric guitar headstock against my maple chest of drawers! Best clean tone ever! 45 years ago I bought a one year old Princeton Reverb silver face that is still awesome! Just need an overdrive pedal that does tweed to Plexi now. Suggestions?

Idk Brian....have you tried the Mesa Boogie fillmore 50 or 100? To me its perfect for "our" style of playing...that low gain tone is very "Paisley-ish"

Some folks forget that the Guitar is a mid-range instrument.Not Brian. That Tele sounded really nice through the SLO 30. IMO.

I watched this review 2 years ago and made mind up to have one of these amps. I have it, and it's everything I hoped it would be and then some! Also not a metal player here by any stretch!

I bet guys who show up for a non-metal gig with a soldano get the same looks I do when I show up with my vh4. "What the hell are you doing here with that thing??" Its like just wait, you haven't heard channels 1 and 2 yet lol Nice to see the SLO doing clean and crunch.

I sure like Soldano's and they might be a little high in price but I think they could be worth it. What I really miss is my old Seymore Duncan 100W combo. Man I loved that thing, BUT, like an idiot,,,, sounds good to me. I also liked the Jackson 100w that Grover was developing back in the day (80'S), come to think of it, I miss those days period. Man oh man, I agree. I'm a low gainer too and this amp is amazing! Even at bedroom levels the harmonics are not to be believed. I've only had mine for 3 or 4 days now, and it's a keeper. Thanks for your review, Brian! It certainly helped my purchase decision.

The bright switch seems different than the original SLO100 in that it works on both channels. The original SLO100 it only affected the clean/crunch channel. The famous “Warren Haynes mod” clipped the bright cap from the overdrive channel. Looks like on his amp having a bright switch that works on both channels adds a “switchable Warren Haynes mod”.

Amp sounds great! Would love one and will get one when someone dies and leaves me the estate. Till then, I'll stick with my Fender Bassbreaker 30r. It's not as "harmonically rich" but it gives me what I need, and that will have to do. Oh-it's $799.

This video is just more proof that if you can't do it with a Telecaster, it probably isn't worth doing in the first place. Also I think there's a Soldano amp in there somewhere.

Unfortunately, i don't have SLO. But i have NEURAL SLO and i discovered that... I love it more in low gain! Yes, i am a metal guy - DEATH, ATHEIST, MORBID ANGEL... DSP SLO is enough to play eveything, but it's perfect when i plug singe-pickups. Peace!

I have the slo30 and the Friedman BE50 dlx.. I actual prefer the friedman, it covers every ground the slo does and 3 channels.. But im keeping the slo anyway

‘Night by Night’’! YES the SLO is the BEST amp ever! Tip: use a Tumnus or clean/ish type boost run - clean on crunch volume on 4-6 and the lead channel on 4-6... all EQ at 12 and with the boost pedal you can get (4) channels!
