Turn that volume up, plug in those headphones, and get lost in the soundtracks from another era as we’re listening to the 10 best soundtracks on the Master System. These aren’t in any order either, all of them are great!
Let me know in the comments below what your favorite Master System Soundtrack is, and don't forget to subscribe to watch more Master System content!

As always, another great video. All of these titles have great music, but, of these, Fantasy Zone and Ys are my favorite soundtracks. However, my top 2 soundtracks on the system overall though are Double Dragon and The Flash. The Master System PSG conversion of the Double Dragon soundtrack is quite nice, and I prefer that conversion of the music over the NES tracks but prefer the Game Boy music conversion over the SMS's PSG soundtrack. However, the OPLL conversion with the FM Unit is just absolutely on-fire: IMO, it's the best conversion of the arcade music until Double Dragon Advance and is definitely better than the Genesis conversion of the music and any of the other 80s/90s conversions. Of course, arcade Double Dragon is my favorite video game soundtrack of all time, so I may be a bit biased. The Flash I've not played on actual hardware, and, in fact, I don't really enjoy the game at all. However, it has an absolutely amazing PSG soundtrack from Jeroen Tel. Sadly, it's a PAL-exclusive release though.

Kudos for talking about the flash soundtrack!!!\

Wow, what an insightful and thoughtful comment! With such high regards to Double Dragon and The Flash I will need to check them out and listen again to their soundtracks. So, forgive me because I am not technically inclined or have a lot of knowledge about what goes into a console, but you mentioned both the FM Unit and the PSG conversions. Can you explain to me the difference between the two? When I was looking up the soundtracks they had different versions between those two. Thanks for watching and thanks for the great comment!

@@TigerChainsawVideoGames The Japanese Sega Mark III that the Master System is based had an optional FM Sound Unit that included a Yamaha FM Synth chip (the YM2413, also called the OPLL, which is in the same family of chips as the OPL2/OPL3 chips used in the Adlib and early Sound Blaster sound cards on PC; music for it generally sounds more like those chips than the Genesis's YM2612/OPN2, the Neo Geo's YM2610/OPNB, or the king of late-80s/early-90s arcade music, the YM2151/OPM with good music for those chips sounding usually a bit fuller in timbre with more complex instruments). The Japanese Mark III had that as optional, but their version of the Master System itself had the FM chip built in. However, in the rest of the world, for whatever reason, probably cost, SEGA decided to leave out the FM chip and even dropped compatibly with the FM Unit add-on from the Mark 3 (I believe you can restore it with modding). So, it's almost always Japanese releases of games that will some times have the FM music. I do not have an actual Master System-bought a non-working one in the early 00s but couldn't fix it and traded it on-but I do own a Power Base Converter for the Genesis and a handful of Master System games for it since the 90s but have no idea if that can be modded for FM sound.The Mega Everdrive x7 and the Mega Everdrive Pro support FM sound for Master System roms on the Genesis though.

Also, I think it's a shame, since it's based on the Master System, that SEGA didn't include the Yamaha YM2413 from the Japanese Master System inside the Game Gear. I'm sure it would have cost a little more and maybe it draws too much power-and the Game Gear already ate batteries like crazy; however, I still think it would have been amazing to have that on the Game Gear. I generally prefer Game Boy soundtracks of the same game when they were on both Game Boy and Game Gear just because they are usually 'warmer'/'fuller' sounding, but had the Game Gear had that Yamaha FM synth, it could have sounded amazing for a handheld of the time. Just missed opportunities. BTW, Bill over at Retro Comparisons put out a comparison of the Game Boy and Game Gear game featuring The Smurfs, which is a game I've never played, but it has a really catchy soundtrack and appears to be on the Master System too with the same soundtrack as the Game Gear version.

Some really solid soundtracks from the sounds of them here. While I’ll admit, my experience with the SMS may not be extensive, one of the gripes I had with the console (much like the Game Gear) was its sound card. If in the hands of the right composer though, it can sound quite good! Sonic the Hedgehog really did have a fantastic soundtrack for the SMS, and several others like Wonder Boy III, Ys, and Miracle Warriors sounded really good! My personal favorite soundtrack on the SMS is actually Ninja Gaiden. I thought that was a unique installment, but had a good soundtrack to go along with it. Great video as always, TC!

Sonic is so iconic with the music, and I was happy that the SMS version kept the spirit of the Genesis. Wonder Boy III is my personal pick but Miracle Warriors is also a banger. Ninja Gaiden is one that I haven't checked out so I would love to listen to the OST. Thanks for watching buddy!

Golvellius, Phantasy Star, Black Belt (as said below the boss theme is really great), Wonder boy 2 and 3, Outrun, Xillion has few tunes but they are great. Also Spacer Harrier and Ys have classical tunes. I had not heard Miracle Warrior musics before but they are awesome. I wish they had ported Ultima 3 instead of 4, 3 has the best ost in the entire ultima serie. But what they did to Ultima 4 on the master system is magical, definitely a great version of ultima 4.

Nice list! I have to say that the 2 games that I liked the music the most from the short bits you've played are Golvelius and Miracle Warriors! I would have let the menu on and let the music play if I had the console and those games as a kid lol! Congrats on 7K+ subs! It's totally deserved! Happy New Year! Great video and keep up the good work!

Miracle Warriors is such a great OST. It gets you hyped for the game! I remember doing that as a kid, and just leaving the menu on so it would play music or start an intro video. I miss those times! Thank you on the milestone, it's nice to see it. Hopefully someday I hit 8K. I'm thankful for all your support and friendship.

Great list! Dragon's Trap is easily my all time favorite. I'd put the Spellcaster ost at #2, it jams and really sets the atmosphere of the game. Golvellius, R-Type, Rastan, Land of Illusion and anything by Yuzo Kushiro would be some others. Oh and Zillion 2 has some crazy infectious music too!

Cool vid, I was hoping to see Outrun and R-Type make the cut. I'll keep an eye out for Quartet and Miracle Warriors. Wonder Boy III and Fantasy Zone I sort of slept on, a lot of the Genesis ports are solid too like Castle of Illusion and Streets of Rage. Also, it may only be a single level out of the ost, but the music to stage 4 of Kung Fu Kid has a nice 8-bit charm/vibe to it.
@TigerChainsawVideoGames

I haven’t heard any of these soundtracks before but that’s probably because I’ve never played any master system games before 😂 some of these could be quite catchy while others would be annoying after awhile. I liked the golvellius music the best probably. Good video!

There is something about the 8-bit systems that just really challenged musicians to go above and beyond in order to compensate for the limited palette. If you've ever opened one of these up in a sheet music program, you'll see an insane quantity of notes all over the map! It really is impressive. Excellent list you put together here 😀

@@TigerChainsawVideoGames I have played through the remake a couple of times now. I actually have a collection of all the variants of the original and the remake for all systems. I think I’ll make a video on the collection at some stage. It’s one of the best lovingly made remakes ever made. You can switch back and forth independently between original and new sfx, music & graphics on the fly. Sometimes I have to switch on the sfx for opening chests and stuff because the original sounds are burnt into my brain 😅
