Hey Tyler. The best option for a stretcher is actually one a bit narrower than your swag. I have a 1000mm stretcher and an 1100mm swag. If in rain it minimises the amount of water that gets in under the swag as the water flows off the sides and not onto the stretcher. So your dad is all over it!

The kings stretcher is the best I've found. Its wider and longer than all the other brands and also cheaper.

The new crashpads have a 70mm mattress. But for longer trips putting some foam mats underneath may still be a good idea. I also like how the straps are stitched on so you don't need to worry about loosing them. Thanks for the review.

Good review. I was was tossing up between this and a Darche recently. I went the Darche but they were pretty similar so it came down to personal preference. Nice bonus info on their sleeping bag which I’ve also been looking at closely.

My old swag is an old zip open heavy canvas style with double D rings on the straps rather than buckles that I used with a dome tent , still have it . It came with a 50mm foam mattress that bottomed out pretty easy so I carried a 150mm inflateable mattress that went in the domey and then put the swag on that . An inflateable mattress takes up little room , that worked for me .
@kieron3676

I upgraded to a self inflating mattress. Best decision ever! It is a little more work to pack up, as you have to deflate it. But you can inflate it to your preferred hardness, it insulates you from the coldest ground and and packs up easier and thinner than the normal foam mattress.
@davidbernadine
@davidbernadine 3 года назад
That's what I do too. The foam mattresses that come with swags are very bulky, and so are the self-inflating 4WD mats. To dramatically reduce the volume of my sleeping gear, I sometimes leave the bulky mattress at home, taking the swag only and instead of the bulky mattress, I take an ultra-compact hiking-style mat such as the Exped Megamat Duo. This double mat is 100mm thick, packs down to 70cm x 30cm, has an R-value rating of 8.1 (-40oC) and weighs 4.6kg.

I have the Kings Big Daddy Deluxe Swag , I tossed out the sponge type mattress and bought a Kings self inflating mattress, they are a lot more comfortable . I solved the sagging issues by getting some 1 inch PVC pipe and filling it up with hot sand that I heated in the oven then poured it into the PVC pipe and bent it to the shape of the outside polls in a made up jig of sorts and let it cool down. The pipe retains the shape you bend it to when the hot sand cools right down . Note I cut the length of PVC in two when it had taken shape for easy storage and I connect them together with connecting pvc pieces bought at the same place I bought the pipe .

Yes, I have tested out many swags, ARB, Blackwolf, Oztrail, 23zero and Crashpad as well, personally, I think Crashpad swags are strong and reliable. I currently have 3 single and 2 doubles. My parents love them and so do I. Also, this is a great review, Keep it up!

Good vid mate! Still love using my old oztrail king, was interested to see an in-depth review/walkthrough after seeing crashpad all over Insta. Mines not freestanding like this, but you peg out the openings at the ends for ventilation anyway so it’s not an issue, and most of the time I use a stretcher as well, helps with pack up as your not rolling up all the mud/dirt/water into your bag when you’re done.

I chose a Darche Dusk to Dawn over the Crashpad . The reason was the height was a bit higher internally and I thought the Darche would be less claustrophobic . The Crashpad is almost identical design , probably a copy . Darche have a 75mm mattress . I also purchased a Oztent Stretcher which the swag fits perfectly . Rated at 200kg . great stretcher

Nothing beats a single pole tent (or similar), a stretcher (OzTrail easy fold) and a good inflatable mattress (Blackwolf). You can put your chair inside, clothes off the floor, stand up inside or sit down on stretcher. And they all pack up way smaller (especially as you can stack them into voids).

I have had a queen size swag from kulkyne for years now. I think they were one of the original companies to bring out the dome swag. I can’t fault it except for the matress as well. I slide a couple of single self inflating mats under it but thinking of getting the 100mm deluxe matress from them soon.

I'm a big fan of my 23Zero Bandit 1400. I used a Kings double swag before buying it and also looked at the Crashpad once my Kings died, but wasn't sold by it using the same ol' design with the spreader bar putting so much pressure on the poles themselves, and as was mentioned, the lack of a center pole.

I have a crash pad double swag. Love it. Super easy to setup, the straps are really long and the bag is massive so you don't have to roll it bum hole tight to fit unlike the Kings double that I have for guests and kids. As you said, Tyler, you can leave bedding and pillows etc in it and it's not a drama. Worth the dollars, buy once, cry once.

I may provide a different perspective. I looked a lot into swags and which ones to buy and decided to go with a tent instead. I never understood the benefits or attraction to a swag once we slept in our tent. We bought a Coleman 3 person tent for $210 and a wanderer double mattress for $160. Extremely soft mattress so super comfy to sleep being 120mm thick. The pillows, doonas, mattress and tent are together lighter than a swag setup It was also cheaper, the double crashpad swag being nearly $500. Our Setup was was 370 total. The tent also has heaps of headroom and more breathing space. Heaps of double windows with super fine mesh to provide airflow and protect from flies. Super helpful being tall if you want to sit up or get anxious in tight spaces. Finally there's all the little things. Its got built in telescopic poles and took me 30 seconds to setup. Pull and twist the poles, put the rainproof mesh over the top, hammer it down and roll out your mattress. The zips are great and it all packs back easily in the tent bag. That's my opinion, might do a video on it one day. But had a mediocre experience with swags. Had a great experience with our tent

I have both a normal tent and swag. The swag is ten times quicker to set up. Can be put up in driving rain and not get wet inside. Also if it’s windy you don’t have to fight it. Canvas is for life , so I’m wondering what happened to his ARB swag.

Great review, having owned 3 swags including the crashpad double I’d agree with everything but add or emphasise: 1. Plastic buckles broke second use for me but I was tightening by pulling against them. Wrong technique by me and crashpad were great on the repair but the D ring used on Murchison River is a vastly more robust detail as you can tighten against it. 2. Mattress also swapped out but for Drifta double swag mattress as it was far superior in comfort (crashpad swag 2 years old so maybe updated since?). 3. Thing that gets me about rolling up a swag (apart from lifting the weight of a double with bedding) is the condensation that forms on the underside of the plastic base against the ground over night. In eastern Australia at least it is guaranteed to sweat meaning you roll it up wet even at the most perfectly grassed campsite in clear conditions. 4. I’m 6 foot 3 and find the double a bit claustrophobic even with just a kid not adult in there with me. A single swag on a stretcher is a good alternative re height, weight, openness, and moisture but if considering that I reckon you can’t beat Murchison from WA but they are a traditional swag with no poles so mosquito net if conditions require. That’s my conclusion on double swags even tough the quality of crashpad is great. After the ants at Mutawintji recently in the double swag, I went straight home and ordered a rooftop tent. It’s that or the single swag on stretcher now for me.

Not taking anything away from this, just a different perspective. I’m 6’4” and me and my 6’ girlfriend have a ton of room in the double. No claustrophobia. I would like a better mattress and do miss being able to use a single swag/ stretcher set up also.

4 Years using one on the beach. Pros - Good quality build, lasts a long time. - Good customer service when poles break - Thick canvas that cant rip and keeps light out Cons - Broken Pole (Have to carry a spare as I don't trust it the pressure is very high) - No Centre Pole, swag sags terribly which makes it very uncomfortable in wind if you sleep in the foetal position. It constantly taps and hits your legs waking you up. - Ropes not long enough on the ends for using on a stretcher - Could use a bendy pole system for the end flaps rather than ropes to make it actually 'stand alone' - The zippers clang around all the time in the wind which actually wakes you up, they are loud as they are heavy duty. I use plastic ties to stop them moving somewhat but usually use earplugs instead. This could easily be fixed with a plastic coating or something over the metal. - Metal parts of the swag like the bits the poles go into rusted quickly, should be using stainless at this price. - It's massive to role up and swag bag too small still. The mattress is OK on a stretcher but not OK on the ground. Adding a thicker mattress just means its even bigger. - Plastic Clip system on straps to hold it together rolled up are crap and flimsy. Needs to have traditional metal slide system to ramp the pressure up after rolling up. Overall decent swag but outdated design that could be heavily improved upon.

What's the point of a swag over a tent? I have a 3-person tent that packs into a duffel bag (maybe half as long as that swag seems to be) including sleeping bags and mattresses. Is it just the setup time? It does seem to be faster to set up than a tent.

Tougher then a tent in regards to wind/weather/rocky ground etc. Can leave all your bedding in it which makes pack up and set up easier and tie it all on the roof. I have a Kings Big Daddy Deluxe double and I think it's brilliant. You said that the Crashpad is definitely much better than the Kings, but you didn't say why. Are you comparing the Crashpad to the Big Daddy Deluxe (70mm mattress) or the standard Kings double swag (50mm mattress)? In my opinion the Kings Big Daddy Deluxe is better than the Crashpad for the following reasons: 1. $229 delivered for the Kings Big Daddy Deluxe v $498 + $49 delivery (a whopping 143% dearer) for the Crashpad (that's a massive price difference) 2. The Kings Big Daddy Deluxe is identical in design to the Crashpad, apart from the following features: (i) the rubberised base on the Big Daddy Deluxe extends around 100mm above the ground level. That is a huge advantage if you inadvertently camp in a low-lying area and it rains. Also in heavy rain, the mud splatter is easier to clean off the rubberised extended cover, rather than the canvass on the Crashpad. (ii) Yes, I've had pole breaks like you have experienced. I don't think the pole quality it that great on the Kings swags. I claimed my pole breakage under warranty and Kings/4WD Supercentre response to my warranty claim was brilliant. Not only did they replace one of my broken set of poles, they gave me an extra spare set of poles! I think that's because they come in a pack of 2. So now I have 3 good sets of poles (one spare) plus the broken set that I can now salvage the unbroken poles from that set. A tip to fix a pole breakage is to bring a 200mm length of old garden hosing with you. If the pole breaks, you can poke the broken pole through the garden hosing, then keep it there with duct tape. (iii) The Kings Big Daddy Deluxe comes with 2 storage pockets at one end (I wish they had one at each end) v just 1 storage pocket at one end on the Crashpad. The Kings now make an oversize double swag bag, making it easier to fit your swag in like the Crashpad. That negates the drawback of the tight-fitting swag cover that comes with the Kings swag. My swag cover is admittedly tight to fit with the extra thick 70mm mattress (compared with the standard 50mm), but after a few goes, you get better and within a week, it goes in without any issues. Other comments: a. I seasoned my Kings swag properly before my trip and I had no issues with water leaking on the first few nights like you experienced. I don't have an awning, so my swag is exposed to the elements, but my swag still kept me dry. If you have a waterproof tent or swag, you don't need an awning to protect your swag from water leaking in. Awnings are not recommended in heavy winds. I've heard of awnings collapsing, bending or breaking in heavy winds and then you have to have your swag exposed to the elements. So I like my Kings Big Daddy Deluxe swag as it doesn't need an awning to protect it from the rain. b. You said you didn't find the mattress that comfortable. I don't have an comfort complaints with my 70mm thick mattress that comes with the Kings Big Daddy deluxe. I wouldn't like to go any lower than 70mm and I'm so glad I didn't go for the standard Kings swag which has a 50mm mattress. I believe that some of the earlier models of the Crashpad had 50mm thick mattresses. Maybe you had the 50mm mattress, which would explain why you didn't find it that comfortable. This double mat is 100mm thick, packs down to 70cm x 30cm, has an R-value rating of 8.1 (-40oC) and weighs 4.6kg. c. From my observations, the sagging on swags is more of an issue with swags that don't have a tensioning pole at the top to keep the two ends taut. My swag still sags, but not as bad as the swags with no tensioning pole at the top. The other advantage of the tensioning pole at the top is that the swag is stronger in the wind and it's self-standing (very handy when the ground is rock-hard). PS I love your videos. I especially like it when you show a map and explain in detail where you've travelled each day, which few 4WDers do on RU-vid.

Without a center pole the swag is useless, if you close that up you carnt move without hitting the side. Also all good swags have pvc coverage on the sides at least 100mm +unless designed back in 1720. This swag is way behind in technology and clearly the company dosent want to pay for that up to date swag making or and havent done there homework. That there swag is the worst ive come across. From an experienced avid camper.

Most side sagging comes from not pegging the base of the swag out full stretch along with the rain covers, there's slight sagging, but not caving in like when you don't peg it down. So your $500-$600+ price points for your centre poll type swags can be negated by simply not being a lazy mess. Get a kings double swag and upgrade the mattress and bag for under $300 delivered, so don't be a lazy mess of a human and you can find something else to spend $200-$300+ dollars on....like a life coach or something lol

Seems decent, but no where close to being the best on the market.

Video title is "best swag on the market?!". For this comment I would have thought there would be a review of more than one swag, at best a comprehensive review of many swags. Not the case though. It was a review of a swag you got for free - whether its any good or not is beside the point. From this I can only summarise that the title is a click bait title, like so many of your other videos. I don't mind your content, but I'm over the click bait so I unsubscribed and will be more choosy with what I watch of yours in the future.

Interesting that you use the words comprehensive and summarise. But fail to read the whole title which if you had would of saved you all the time you see to of had stolen. Also why is a review of a product any different if said product is a gift? Seems your comprehension is lacking. I summarise that you learn to read more of the title of vlogs in future and form a better comprehension of what said vlog might be about. That way your summary and complaint wouldn’t be incomprehensible in relation to the title.
