Sarah, How about segregating your mechanical tools from your electrical tools. The old tool box can probably hold all of your tools for the electrical work on your cars, along with the tools for your detailing jobs.

One small tip that I have found useful for random tools that don't seem to fit a specific category is that if you always seem to open the second drawer in your box to get tool X out but you keep it in say the fourth drawer then you should just go ahead and move it to the second drawer even if it doesn't seem to fit with the other items in that drawer. Your brain has already decided that tool X should be in the second drawer so you might as well get with the program and put it in that drawer.

I just got my first big tool box, a craftsman 41" box and topchest with a built-in power strip. I've organized most of my tools that were in various boxes scattered here an there, but now I realize I have real estate that needs to be filled. Socket, and wrenches, and power tools, oh my!

You may have thought making this video was boring, but I must say I am impressed. I have the same tool chest as your first one, and more tools that will not fit in there and they are located all over the place, and same as you, hard to find when needed. So, I am inspired to purchase that beautiful tool chest and relocate my tools. I have to say, you are organized and like to keep things clean, which I like and respect. You would have made a great Woman Marine, but the Air Force has taught you well. Love watching all of your videos, you are really entertaining.

In the dark ages if you had a motorcycle, worked on it yourself & didn't have an impact driver you had a lot of messed up phillips head fasteners. You'll really appreciate that took when the time comes😉. Pretty nice setup there! A person can never have too many tools!

Timely for me and spot on. I moved last year and am doing a garage overhaul which is forcing me to turn a welding cart into a detail cart. At the same time my 45 year old Craftsman 2 drawer portable tool box is done and I'm considering either a cart with drawers or a lower rolling chest (30" max.). This all has to fit in a adjacent garage closet to keep the garage design goals of empty walls, flooring, recessed lights and the cars. Nothing else. Nothing on the floor except the garbage container w/ surrounding cabinetry for the recycle bin. Totally clean. Thank you for showing your process for when the time comes to populate the new box(s). Your effort is appreciated, informative, and educational that I can build on it.

I love your jokes. The small box , the top can be a car box and the bottom is a work cart to move around, saves you on going back and forth to the big box. Just take what you think you need from the big box into the smaller rolling box. Finally, koodos to Gearwrench for the gift.

Oh dear I've needed a bigger toolbox too for a while now, but who boy are they expensive. And I went and spent all my money on a bunch of off-grid solar power stuff. Have most ‘tools’ in my nice boxes. I have the same cheapy black craftsman boxes and use them for various misc stuff like consumables...sandpaper, metal polishing stuff, roloc discs/abrasives, think one drawer is electrical stuff like wiring/solder/connectors, etc.

Hey Sarah that blue handled hose and cable cutter with the heavy jaws works nice on heavy elec. Cables that you had trouble cutting in the past. Try it on some cable you got laying around.

I have upgraded boxes several times. I always find a good use for the old ones and after all these years, an electrical box makes the most sense. A place for the wiring, connectors, heat-shrink, test light, power probe, crimping tools and meters. It is something that I should have done years ago!

Put electrical stuff in the second upper box - multimeters, wiring, connectors, pliers, wire strippers, solder station, connector pin removers, odd ends (I salvage connector ends out of any car /wiring harness I don't need anymore etc etc)

Maybe you could use the top of the craftsman box for different supplies such as bolts or connecters and use the bottom for detailing since it has deeper drawers

Hey Sarah, If you have a whole bunch of time and want to do something boring but worth doing. Use some two part epoxy to cover /seal/glue down your labels to those uneven textured surfaces. To do it really fancy, tape around the label and use a small paintbrush to apply the epoxy.
