Piggy was an awesome and creative songwriter and he was way too overlooked, it is always great to see him given the credit and recognition that he deserves.
I find all Canadian thrash bands are overlooked. Bands like RAZOR,D.B.C.,SACRIFICE AND SLAUGHTER. All these bands had awesome albums. And i also think anthrax arw overated hahaa. Sorry to happy for my thrash taste.
Ride the lightening is also my favorite Metallica album. Metal Church debut is also great. It just shows how important good song writing is, as well as style.
You're right, recorded in October '84, but released in '85. 🙂 PS: And maybe not real thrash to some (1st wave black, pre-death), but who cares? 😉 It blew me (& neighbors & parents) away in the mid 80's. Probably the most extreme stuff I had back in the day ('till I got Scream Bloody Gore & Wehrmacht's Shark Attack). 😎 Edit: Oh wait, Possessed. 🤔
Nobody will ever top those 80s Metallica albums until the end of time, man I miss 80s underground Metallica, the greatest heavy metal ever created imo.
I Love the first three Albums of Metallica. Whatever they did since the 90's. Metallica is in my heart because of the great first three Albums. And i will always remember C. Burton!
Anthrax - Fistful of Metal is like no other Anthrax album. There is a power that attends this album that Anthrax never duplicated on any other of their albums.
@Syd Edwards Well, I wouldn't say they went down hill immediately. I think Spreading... and Among... are amazing albums. A little different than Fistful of Metal but still up there.
For me Voivod is the first metal-cyber-punk band in history and in the Top 3 in the ranking of the best thrash metal album of 1984, cheers from Chile, South America
Mercyful Fate - Don't Break the Oath for 1984 which probably wouldn't be considered specifically thrash metal because of the content, but I've always found King and MF to be a beautiful blend of genres and it certainly inspires the thrash genre.
If you go back and listen to Misfits Earth /AD it was so Thrash, I wish they went in that direction. For 1985 DRI , Dealing With It. You might right these off as Punk, but before thrash/speed , this is what we skated to.
I'm glad to see Celtic Frost getting the love they deserve. Morbid Tales was - and still is - one hell of a punishing listen. Fast, loose, dirty, and with D-beat kicks. Very Motörhead, very Venom, and an approach that Sodom would also become great at down the line!
Agreed - they released some great albums. Never seem to hear much about them these days. Do you remember the Hellhammer EP Apocalyptic Raids? Was also really good.
@@DariusKhan Thanks for the reply! Yeah, those early Hellhammer outings were real rough and unpolished, but both gnarly AND atmospheric! It's easy to see why Matt Pike has always dug Hellhammer and Celtic Frost. I'm kinda partial to what Tom G. Warrior and Martin Eric Ain did on Morbid Tales, and To Mega Therion though. I wish Martin was still around - R.I.P. to the good man. Tom has a newish band called Triptykon, but to be honest, I'm not overly familiar with them, so I have some listening to do! Btw dude, have you joined the Ruthless Metal Discord group?
Ride the Lighting is number one for me! My second favorite rock/metal album of all time! Kill Em All had a great sound, but Ride the Lighting has some of their best songs.
Had completely forgotten about the song Pounding Metal! Had me punching the air like I was back in school. Wearing my patch denim! This series of your video makes me so happy during difficult times
@@RuthlessMetalYT my denim has the following patches... Motorhead.Slayer.Led Zeppelin.ACDC.Misfitd.Ramones.Black Sabbath.Ozzy. and many 💀 How about you? As I said love the channel keep at it futhamucka!!
I'm not sure what happened to my old vest, I haven't seen it in like 10 years, it's probably deep down in the wardrobe. I had Mercyful Fate and a King Diamond Fatal Portrait backpatch.
@@doraanaisnin5199 hate was a strong word they seem like good dudes. I just can't stand there music. They are highly overrated. They aren't good enough to be labeled as part of the big 4. Their slot needs to go to exodus or testament. Hell death angel could even replace them.
I absolutely love the 1st Metal Church record. Killer vocals and so many cool riffs. R.I.P. David Wayne. Can't argue with your number 1. It's my favorites thrash record of all time. I think that the pinnacle of thrash metal year was 1986. Peace Sells, Master of Puppets and Reign in Blood. Anthrax Among the Living came real close with a March 22 1987 release.
True thou I was 18 at the time and had been into the scene from early on ( meaning the heavier sound) and that was my easiest description of it. Like I said before there was nothing quite like it at the time. So the first time I listen to it was just in awe. Because its that good. No matter what age the listener is and yes I bought the album the day it came out.
Though Piggy is long dead R.I.P., Voivod is still going strong. Their last two albums were fantastic! Thanks for this list, it really brought me back to my long lost youth.
The first time I heard “Revolution” back in 2005 I thought the same thing. Then when I remembered the band name was Exciter, I thought it was fair. LOL
Yeah the riff in Judas Priest's Revolution sounds like Exciter's Pounding Metal but Pounding Metal is a better song imo and Priest has been my favorite band since 1981 lol
So many amazking heavy metal records in 1984!! I think I would have put Exciter a little further up, maybe ahead of Anthrax. This is a great list and these are ALL great records!!!!
I remember the day I bought Metal Church Metal Church took it home and played the shit out of it on the old turn table ...All the neighbours had a good listen now 37yrs later that opening riff still gives me goose dumps when I here it. And why I worship the Metal Gods each and everyday
Metal Church to me stands as the greatest debut album by any band ever. Godfathers of black/thrash and today there are a thousand bands trying to sound just like them and thousands of vocalists trying to sound like David Wayne RIP
I actually heard Metal Church’s version of “Highway Star” before Deep Purple’s even though these days I’m a Blackmore worshipper. Yes, that first Metal Church album is amazing all the way. 🤘🏻
It's awesome to see this music getting the attention it deserves in 2021. Excellent channel, I'm really glad I found it and subscribed. You're quite the aficionado.
When I was a kid I used to smoke a bunch of weed and listen to RIDE THE LIGHTNING and MASTER OF PUPPETS back to back and just Invision all the stuff the songs depicted. Great story telling, it left you with little doubt of what the songs were about.
One album from 1984 stands above all the others from then...MetallicAs Ride The Rightning 🌩 After all these years..(I first heard it in 92 when I was 14) I still feel that tinge of excitement when I hear it or see reviews on it ⚡⚡⚡⚡⚡
Honorable Mention: Slayer's Haunting the Chaple EP. And the first 3 songs, Chemical Warfare, Captor of Sin, and the Title Track was the first songs that gave Slayer their distinct sound. Show No Mercy while good still felt like your typical Thrash Metal sounding album. No different from say Exodus or early Metallica. That all changed with Haunting the Chapel and then Hell Awaits.
I was 23 years old that year and purchased 5 of these 10 lp's, I really miss all that great music. Still have all the albums though. I would have put the Metal Church lp at number one, Metallica second. P.S saw Slayer at a small club in Toronto October 84 on their Haunting The Chapel ep tour, heaviest show I ever saw in my life and I saw many.
I've been having that Running Wild album and Fistful of Metal and Morbid Tales and Metal Church since they was all released in 84 and I loved them then and still love them to this day. And RIDE THE LIGHTNING actually happens to be my most favorite thrash album of all times also. Verygood video and taste my friend.🙂\m/
Thanks for sharing this video 👏👏👏👏👏 i remember 1st time listen war and pain ,to much noise!but i have killing tecnology, dimesion atros, nothing face in vinil LPs ♥️😁
Warrant-first strike Warhead-speedway Nuclear assault-game over Bulldozer-fallen ángel ep Dark ángel- we have arrived Many others releasse in this year but the list its ver good!
During this period, fewer thrash albums were released than EPs also known as mini albums... But some full albums have also been released. Metallcia: Ride the Lightning, Slayer: Hauting the chapel (EP), Anthrax: Fistful of Metal, Sodom: In the sign of evil, Destruction: Setence of death,Venom: At war with satan, Celtic frost: Morbid tales, Exciter: Violence and force...
Not a video I expected to be early to but the algorithm is a strange beast. Big credit for putting Morbid Tales that high, although I think it's clear to everyone why Ride The Lightning sweeps this year. The album is genre defining IMO, the same way British Steel was for metal as a whole.
@@plasmakitten4261 well Metallica was definitely still pretty underground when Lightning was released, but I think your original point stands regardless: British Steel somehow crystalized the development from hard rock into metal as its own genre -- same principle with Lightning
I remember going to the Marquee Club in London to see Metal Church. We were totally blown away to see Metallica opening for them, completely unannounced. That was a fantastic night!
Ride the lightning is undoubtly one of the greatest thrash records if not one of the greatest albums of all time, there is no filler on this album, the atmosphere is dark and cold, the guitar tones are frosty, also slayer's live undead and haunting the chapel are amazing, listening to chemical warfare and haunting the chapel you can see bits of reign in blood and south of heaven in it.
I just heard it for the first time yesterday. The 2 first songs are kinda weak imo. They sound just like something off Bonded by Blood but Exodus did it better imo. The rest was pretty good.
1. haunting the chapel. 2. War and pain. 3. Morbid Tales. 4. Emperors return. 5. Metal Church. 6. Fistful of Metal. 7.Gates to Purgatory. 8. Metal Inquisition. 9. Ride the Lightning. 10. Violence and force. BUT: If Dont break the Oath qualifies as Thrash or speed, than that would be 3rd place and everything else would get bumped down one. And some people consider Motorhead thrash.
Piledriver rules! Living Death is a nice surprise. Merciful Fate should be there though. I would put Anthrax as a very close 2nd to Metallica. I always thought Metal Church's first album came out in '85. But great to see them ranked so high. Maybe you should do a list of nothing but the greatest EP's in Metal history. Razor was raw but I love Armed and Dangerous. Haunting the Chapel may be short but every second of it is pure brutality. Dark and demonic. A precursor to Hell Awaits. Slayer at their most primal. And 1984 saw 2 of the most important and legendary bands in metal release their heaviest albums ever. Priest and Maiden put out Defenders of the Faith and Powerslave respectively. While not Thrash these 2 albums showed that they could still compete with the most extreme metal coming out. And if not for Priest and Maiden and the great Metal and Rock before them, Thrash would not exist. Let us not lose sight of that. Listen to Powerslave front to back and tell me most of those riffs aren't fast and thrashy! In my opinion IRON MAIDEN is the greatest band of all time. Their first 5 albums are all classics. Rank them in any order and you would not be wrong. I wet off base there but had to put '84 into perspective. One more thing: Venom are always overlooked. At War With Satan was their 3rd great album in a row. Way ahead of their time. The title track alone at 22 minutes plus is remarkable for an extreme Metal band. Venom fucking rules!
Yeah Mercyful Fate ain't really a thrash metal band, sure they delivered some rather evil heavy metal but the bands on this list is thrashier than them. But if I do the best metal albums of 1984 it will be on it, that's for sure!
Say what you will, but the song "Metal Church" is sending me chills down my spine even after 37 years! BTW, I just realize that I owned and listened to 7/10 albums of that year ...
Great Metal of 1983, 1984. I am from Germany and in 1984 i called this music Speed Metal. I was 12 in 1984. I loved Ride the Lightning from Metallica and i still do. What a great A!bum.
Great lists. Kinda funny that the World's most UNDER RATED HM band Metal Church, and the World's most over rated band period Nirvana, both came from a little coastal town southwest of Seattle.
Great list. My top 3 would be Exciter, Voivid, and Metallica. Ride the Lightning is my favorite Metallica album, maybe even my favorite album of all time period. Also their heaviest sounding record and if someone asks me what metal music is, that's the album I'll give them.🤘
I enjoy Running Wild early "satanic era" much more than their pirate years. 'Branded and exiled' is an old favorite. I love their no-nonsense midpaced riffs.
Best 1984 Thrash Metal Witchfynde - Lord's of Sin - Stab in the Back Atlain - Fear of the Dark - Hallowed By the Priest Manilla Road - Open the Gates - Witches Brew Ostrogoth - Ecstasy and Danger - Queen of Desire Anvil - Backwaxed Lizzy Borden - Love You to Pieces - Council for the Caldron Storm witch - Walpurgis Might
Don't forget Razor had 2 killer albums that year!! 🤘🤘🤘 & other killer debut full-length albums by all kinds of other kick ass bands too from that year.. like Destruction, Hirax, Nasty Savage, Hallows Eve, SOD, DRI, Sacrifice (CAN.) (recorded in 1985**), Destructor, Onslaught, Agent Steel, Dark Angel, Iron Angel, Helloween (if you consider their first EP & album thrash/speed).. SO MANY!! 🤘🤘🤘 Vicious Rumors debut album that year.. Anthrax Spreading the Disease!!
Cool list again. RIDE THE LIGHTNING was so far ahead of the underground competition of the time, considering most thrash bands didn’t even their first album at that point and Metallica released a masterpiece. It’s common to knock Metallica these days (I liked your video about just about all thrash bands selling out, for perspective), but no matter anyone’s opinion on them today, there’s no denying their influence in the 80’s, how many bands followed them and just how damn good they were. I’m glad you gave SENTENCE OF DEATH some love. Even though in the long run I prefer Sodom the best, there’s no denying the awesomeness of early Destruction. Technically and songwriting wise, the we’re ahead of the other bands from Germany in my opinion. Glad you at least mentioned Slayer if not putting them in the list. 13 minutes maybe, but a perfect thirteen minutes. On a similar note, you gave honorable mention to AT WAR WITH SATAN, but Venom’s 3 song WARHEAD single/EP is close to HAUNTING THE CHAPEL. Three incredibly awesome songs.
Yes I've gotten some shit from Metallica fan boys for some of my videos but I hold 'em high as everyone can see now. :) Yes if there was a track or two more on haunting it would have been there in my top 5. probably.
I count myself as a Metallica fan boy (for the most part), but with the exception of DEATH MAGNETIC, don’t consider anything past the 80’s album wise as close to thrash. I enjoy most of the music nonetheless. I’m fine with people not liking post 80’s Metallica, but hate it when it gets to the point where thrash fans don’t acknowledge their 80’s material. It’s the equivalent to ignoring Sabbath for metal in general.
@@metaldams78 i agree but how are you with many metal fans these days hating metallica so much they want to erase their incredible 80's domination and give dave mustaine credit for kill em all. its called dave em all. unbelievable, the metallica hatred fueled lies that have infested the metal community. If mustaine had remained in metallica kill em all would not have been half as good and god knows what ride would have been like. Anyway im with you, Metallica's legacy should remain regardless off their miss steps starting from the black album. Loads=eeek.
You hit the nail on the head, Gary. No doubt Mustaine contributed very early on, but not to the point where it was all him and Hetfield was a nobody. They also did plenty of great stuff without Mustaine in the 80’s. It’s cool for me if people think Metallica had a classic era and non classic era - like just about any band with a long career. It’s the idea of discarding their 80’s output out of spite that bothers me.
I need to check out Piledriver, never heard of them and they sound kick ass! I adore Living Death, and sadly forgot about including this band in my top ten. Voivod is killer period. Exciter is kick ass and they got thrashier as time went on. I really love the old Running Wild, I actually did go beyond the pirate metal stuff when I realized they had Gates to Purgatory and Branded and Exiled. I’m actually trying to get all RW albums
