Cutter's Way is a relatively unknown 1980s film directed by Ivan Passer and stars Jeff Bridges and John Heard. It is one of my favorite movies and the best thriller you've probably never seen.
Similar to post-war, "sunshine" noirs like Chinatown and The Long Goodbye, Cutter's Way follows a pair of friends attempting to bring a murdering oil tycoon to justice. But the film's impact reaching far beyond its plot. There is a sense of timelessness that the film's "arthouse" sensibility captures through its themes and expertly crafted characters.
A great reason to watch this film is a career performance from John Heard, an actor of enormous talent whose career unfortunately never again reached the peak of Alex Cutter.

My email to Criterion. Cutter’s Way, Cutter and Bone. Directed by the underrated; the other Czech director, Ivan Passer, with Jeff Bridges and a legendary performance by John Heard, written by Jeffrey Alan Fiskin, this “sunshine noir” is an underrated masterpiece, the last of the great paranoid post-Warergate thrillers of the 70s. This is a title that deserves and garners a resurgence and a chance to be rediscovered with a beautiful Criterion release. Get Mr Fiskin and Mr Bridges, along with Jeff Cronenweth; the son of Cutter’s brilliant cinematographer father Jordan Cronenweth, and you have a terrific set of supplements . Include the original novel by Newton Thornburg with the package and Criterion adds another gem to their canon. Let’s make it happen!!!

Hell yes!!! This movie is so good, I was shocked I had never heard of it before! I just ran into it by virtue of going through Jeff Bridges' entire filmography, and it was such a gem. The greatest movie about Vietnam and post-traumatic disorder that doesnt mention neither

Boy, you really captured the essence of this extraordinary film. I've just seen it recently, in its entirety that is, and it's lodged itself within me. As you indicate, this is not a typical "thriller," or even a standard bitter veteran returned home movie; it's an Allegory, truly, and it says very much about our country and our world. Still, alas, even to today. Thanks.

The Blu-ray came out quite recently from Imprint (an Australian company which has brought out some unique films already with pretty good extras/supplements included) The Cutter’s Way disc has a couple of audio commentaries, and few featurettes, as well as a nice intro to the film by Mr Bridges himself.

Thank you for directing me (on Twitter) to your video about Cutter's Way. I saw it in the theater when it first came out. I lived in Atlanta then. I went back to see it five or six times when it was in theater. Since then, I've owned it on video and CD and rewatched several more times, calling it my favorite film (well, that and Viva Zapata!) And as think I said on Twitter, Cutter's Way, unfortunately, becomes more relevant with the years. 'It's always somebody else's ass on the line.' The insulation of the elites, the rich, the masters of the universe, only gets more egregious as time unfolds, a sort of reverse evolution seems to me. Thanks.

A film that I put on my personal ‘must see’ list and finally got around to watching and damn what a flick. John Heard is absolutely amazing in it and his performance elevates this film to classic status.

I've long regretted the fact that this film didn't get the backing of its studio, or that John Heard was never as well-used or appreciated in his career. The only other work I've seen him perform to such a beautiful degree is 1979's PBS version of 'The Scarlet Letter'. His 'Rev. Arthur Dimmesdale' is spot-on.

Watched the movie the other night. I wouldn’t call it thrilling at all. It was interesting seeing John Heard play such a different character than what he’s known for, but his character just became grating after a while as the wise, disgruntled, handicapped army vet cliche. Sounds like this guy just wants to be different saying it’s the best thriller you’ve never heard of in a too-cool-for-school commentary voice.

Holy shit! I found this movie thoroughly awful and to hear you pontificate on some kind of soulfulness of this POS and its protagonists is hilarious. Different strokes for different folks I guess? I apologize for perhaps coming off mean, but wow what a pretentious and empty trainwreck of a movie.

@@RenegadeFilm86 I actually paused your video at the 2:30 mark and went and watched it. My favorite genre is thriller/noir, so I was hoping for a hidden gem although I've heard of it before. I'm bewildered how this abomination has so many positive reviews. Have you looked up what else the director crafted? You seem like a nice guy, but when you mentioned this turd alongside 'The Long Goodbye' and 'Chinatown', I had to react. As far as being constructive, there is nothing to be constructive about. It's a mess, from the story, to the writing and dumb characters( especially Heard). All the best in your future endeavours.

@@kimcage7768 I disagree. This movie was thought-provoking, deliberate, and yes, a little slow but very interesting. But for many, it doesn't have the "pop" and fizzy "snap" as popular Hollywood movies. For general audiences, the main hero is unattractive, has an eye patch, and has long dirty hair. He lacks the conventional appeal or, dare I cynically say, "hotness," of milquetoast, clown-actors like Ryan Gosling (he's not hot btw), Ryan Reynolds, Pitt, or whomever, which is what, unfortunately, draws in a lot of women. Are you a woman, Kimcage? I'm curious: what film noir can you think of that you think is great? One current, and one or more from the past?
