Andrew LaCivita I appreciate the tips are you providing, but I have a question in regards to tip #2. If a person did have an address that they could use in their desired state wouldn’t that cause a problem when the job wants you to meet them for an interview? Wouldn’t that paint a picture that you lied on your resume?
@@ludakkris I recognize you likely already have a job, but people visit these many years later. IMO, as long as you actually have a place you can stay for a while (friend/family) and will not ask for relocation then it seems okay to me. When I went to Houston I did so but also told them I was visiting Houston within "these few dates". Basically, if you want to interview me then please do so then. Received a job within 3 days of arriving. I had to go to a resale shop to get work clothes as all I brought we interview ones!
Great tips! I have found that large (10k plus) Facebook groups that are of interest to you are another great place to find people to network with because you have something in common. I’ve seen people reach out on these groups and just say “thinking of moving to Austin to work in tech, I’d love to talk with anyone who lives in the area” and plenty of people reach out.
Hello, Im looking for work in texas. The thing is i live in Canada. Can you assist me on how to go about doing that. Is the tn visa impossible to get? I have 5 years of experience as a BA. Thanks,
Oh my goodness thank you so much! I'm 22 and I'm moving to New Jersey for Hopes to have a fresh start and I'm applying for many jobs! Thank you for your tips!!!
Jordan H Philly is better than jersey & jersey is boring asf reason why 5 of my friends moved to Philly from There lol and they actually doing a lot of renovations to philly it looks way better than 5 years ago
wow I'm on an Andrew video train now. This is amazing, exactly what I need. This is not just about job searching, this is life inspiration! Thank you, Andrew!
Can i actually get hired out of state? What if they ask me for an interview? like I've only saved for around 3-4 months to move and i want to get hired before moving (I'm moving by myself and i got noone around)
Great tips! I do sometimes think it is better to just save up and move to the state first then apply for jobs once your living there. Just seems easier, but this is good advice.
I’ve had an employer ask how soon I plan to relocate (FL to TX). The truth is as badly and excited I am about moving, I don’t plan to move without secured employment. So, it’s a tough question to answer for me 🤔
I agree w/you. I had the same thing happen to me and I let them know I would be there mid-September 2019. I felt like I blew my opportunity because I couldn't pick up and move right then (July). I have to have a reason to move or else you're wasting my time (which is valuable to me).
I want to move out of Portland, OR and back to CO. Colorado Springs to be exact. I have 9 months to save and prepare for this. 🙏 I have a friend in the city I want to move to.
Andrew, what about the possibility of your current employer seeing your Linkedin profile with a different city listed and being called into the HR office whilst job hunting ??!
@@andylacivita Thanks for responding Andrew. I also state in my cover letter, that I'll be relocating to xyz city on xyz month ( usually the same month that I apply to the job or the following month). Is that bad or ?
Thank you so much for this video. I am starting an Associate's degree in Cybersecurity and Computer Networking, and I have a feeling I may need to broaden out my job search to bigger Tech cities such as Austin, Dallas, or Columbus, OH. Outside of my current city of St. Louis. These are great tips as I go through my two years of schooling and start looking for a city to move to for a job.
I just had an interview and it went great except the company isn’t willing to pay for relocation which is surprising to me because they are pretty large. Do you have any tips on how to convince them or possibly negotiate to a certain number that they would be willing to pay for relocation?
I was asked recently from a recruiter if I was willing to relocate to another state before moving forward with an interview. That seems a bit risky to me. I answered no. I could fly out and do an interview, but to relocate just to have them say no, then what?
These are well advised tips and of course those who need relocation help will have to just be upfront with the employers in stating that you live out of state and plan to move once a job is offered. As someone who doesnt need assistance as my move would only be 400 miles (with 1 small u-haul) I still have a hard time thinking the employer wont question why you have no locations posted on your resume of current and previous job(s). Especially if your new destination has locations in their area as well. They may ask if you work at that company in one of their local cities...just forces you to lie more and more in an interview 😕
Can ANYONE get one? Like even those who just work minimum wage jobs?? Like im planning on getting my nail tech license and my pharmacy tech certification and have 6 years of minimum wage jobs behind me on my resume, i know the certifications im going for arent prestigious but my small town in nebraska doesnt have anything for me and i see myself living in places like the carolinas, tennessee or even oregon, i am 23 years old and i want to move out of my state there is literally nothing here, the only kind of safe and stable way to move to a new state for a career if your company that you work for doesnt relocate you, would be to go to college in another state, but i think that might be more expensive
I actually need the relocation package. How do I find companies willing to provide a package/assistance? How can I sway an employer? I will move just to get my career started.
I think companies are more likely to do this if they are only hiring 1 person for the role, esp if its a more important or skilled role. I moved to a new state after taking another job within my company previously and they didn't cover location because it was a lateral move for me. If it was for a management position, for example, they would have.
you need to push recruiters in this situation. many big company recruiters can push your resume in front of big employers to get you the opportunities to interview. direct application is much more difficult to nail in person interview. and your position is much more in demand.
Foreigners have a major obstacle to overcome before they could use any of the tips given in this video. That obstacle is by far greater concern for the companies than the concern of applicant’s relocation expenses from abroad. That concern is immigration bureaucracy that an employer and the employee must go through in order for the latter to obtain a permission to work for the former. That is such a great obstacle that it can be compared to the attempt to climb Everest. If an applicant is prepared to overcome an obstacle of that difficulty, an advice of taking off their current address can be as helpful as telling an Everest climber to put snow boots on because it would help to stay warm. I wouldn’t even mention relocation from abroad because it just tells anyone who knows even barely about what hiring a foreigner entails that the author of this video knows absolutely nothing about that. If I were Google or Apple, the biggest tech employers of foreign citizens, i don’t think I could use MileWalk to recruit people i need...
Any advice for entry level accountants? Moving from WA to South FL, some volunteer experience but no internships. Hoping I can find a job around October before busy season.
Andy, I'm applying for jobs in NY (where I lived for 12 years), although I'm currently living in another state. Are most (or many) applicant tracking systems set up to screen out applicants who aren't located in-state? Even though I can leave my address off my resume and cover letter, I've found that most application systems require you to list your address. Even if I explain in my cover letter that I'll be moving to the NY shortly, that does me no good if the ATS automatically rejects my application (or doesn't rank it high in the search results when the HR person runs the search for the position for which I've applied) and the cover letter is never read. I can list my friend's address in NY when I apply, and if it becomes an issue later on, say that I was staying there temporarily at the time I submitted the resume. However, that would not be truthful. Thoughts? Thank you.
Would you be better off not mentioning that you're not there presently and making yourself very open to interview times or is that just too difficult to pull off? I'm just concerned about getting ignored with any mention of not being there. As you said, it's always easier for them to go with an established local.
Hey Andrew, thank you for your truly inspiring videos. I'm determined to change my career, and even more, to move to another country. Should I put the reason why I want to change a career? Should I even mention it in my cover letter? I would really appreciate your answer. Thank you in advance.
I have my mother’s address on my resume with a note at the bottom saying ‘relocating April 2020’ I just don’t want potential employers think I’m right around the corner, I also stated in my cover letter I’m willing to travel for an in person interview. Just started applying this past week...let’s see
I have an opportunity to relocate in the same state although it’s a 2 hr 45 min drive from my current home. My reason to relocate is that I can purchase a home in a beautiful area for half the price. My question being if I apply for the job and get it where do I live so that I’m near the plant while I sell my home? I just don’t know what to say to the employer when they ask me how I’m going to get there? Thank You
Thank you for this! Just question how do I put new state address in my LinkedIn profile while I am still employed at the company which is located in the home/old state ?
Hello Andrew👋🏻🚀 One quick question? If I where to move to California and apply for a job , would they need a California address to hire me or would my Texas address work ? I’m thinking about staying in a hotel or Airbnb for my first month or so , so I can work hard enough to prove 3x the monthly rent and then I plan on having my own little apartment but I’m a little confused on how that works ? Thanks in advance 🚀
I do have a LinkedIn profile, but, my fear is that my current employer will see it and possibly take action against me. Which is why I have hidden it. Is this a legitimate fear?
@@andylacivita Sorry Andrew, I was not very clear, I meant to say including in you LinkedIn profile that you are looking for work in another state. Also, thank you for the great info you are going out of your way to provide.
Hi Andy. Thanks VERY MUCH for this video! I am relocating from Pennsylvania to Florida in March 2021 (I chose this date bcz I will have a good chunk of money saved by then). WHEN should I start applying for jobs? I am moving by myself so I do not need relocating package and I am moving FOR SURE. Obviously I need to secure a job before moving. I know people already asked these questions but with covid I dont know if anything changes. Is it ok to have a PA cell phone on my resume? And I do not want to change the location on my Linkedin bcz I don't want my current employer to see that I am applying for jobs - is it ok to just put USA? Thanks again for your time!!!
Hi Andy, you said put the city you wanted to move in for job on LinkedIn . What if I'm open to move to any state for my career job? Should I just put "United States" on LinkedIn?
Andy - What if I''m interested in applying for jobs in multiple out of states? like, NY, MN, CA or FL - in this case, how would you put your city on linkedIn
I put in my brother in laws’s address in Greenville, NC where I plan to relocate with my husband and nephew. What happens when the employer asks for an interview and I actually live in Bronx, NY?
I have another question. As ar as a relocation reason in a cover letter , I want to state that I am relocating permanently to saginaw, Michigan by myself to start fresh. How can I go about stating that in a more professional way? Thanks.
I know you mentioned to take your address off when your applying to a job out of state but what happens when they say they want you to come in for an interview in the next day or 2 that might hard to do when you live out of state and need to fly there... the flights are going to be expensive... how do you navigate that issue?
This may be a minor thing, but it's something that popped into my mind. I live near Boston and began my job search in Dallas two weeks ago. I have a temporary base in Duncanville so I can change my resume address. My phone number has a Boston area code. Do I include my current phone number?
This is what I was considering. Maybe finding a temporary job to get settled in my target location before searching for what would ultimately be my career. Did you do this, and if so, do you have any tips?
@@andylacivita OMG thank you for replying! love your videos your a god send. I am moving to Pennsylvania on August 3rd because my husband was offered a better job out there, we are moving in with his brother while we save for a house but i want to help out by getting a full time job. I work as a administrative assistant in Manhattan and want a similar position at a hospital in Bethlehem PA. I've been watching all of your videos because I haven't gone job hunting in about 5 years. I updated my resume and now I'm working on my cover but I'm nervous i wont get an offer before moving. Please help me.
