Quick tip: You can loosen all the locking sleeves of the Gitzo by twisting all of them at one go. Then it'll be much faster to deploy!

6:21 - You open the locks on the Gitzo tripod the same way and I am pretty sure you know that, Peter 7:22 - Seeing how the whole center column moves downwards because you gently touch your bag makes me worried about the whole center column twist lock

Peak design is known for making products that just make sense. Nothing too complicated, just pure performance, and i love it!

When travel, make sure that your flight allow you take allen key, mine was taken by the auxiliary police recently.

Love peak design! Got their everyday backpack and am super amazed by all their thinking that they put into the products.

For Gitzo you can unlock all rings in one grab too and you don’t need much turns, just a half would unlock all sections smoothly. So it’s as fast as lever latches, and the rings won’t bite like levers. It’s the size making PD shine here. It’s like the first iPhone revolution to the phone market, now all brands need to rethink their travel tripod designs too, especially Gitzo at higher price.

Great overview. I'd love to get my hands on one of these. I have a handful of other Peak Design products and they're all well designed and look good. But... BUT-the camera will not "always be level" when the head is down, UNLESS the tripod is level to begin with. As a real estate photographer I'm always very aware of how not-level every floor seems to be, let alone the great outdoors.

I really enjoy everything PeakDesign innovates/creates.

Peak Design is so thoughtful in their design, every Peak product I have I love. I saw another YTer talking this product up and was impressed. You solidified my thoughts and really like when you point out what you like and don't like and compare. The ball head is miles ahead of anyone, not just the competition. Tripod design reminds me of the Sachtler Flowtech 75 MS Carbon Fiber Tripod. Both designs are groundbreaking.

I bought a Manfrotto and my experience just setting it up at home was as hilarious as yours. Five minutes later, I am still twisting, adjusting, and whatnot. Then got the PD one. OMG, such a huge difference. They are not even in the same universe. Thanks for convincing me to try it out!

I share your love about good tripods. For years I had been buying cheap tripods and ended up not using them much because they were clunky. I was travelling overseas and had an idea for a selfie I wanted to take in Paris and needed a tripod . I was about to buy yet another cheap tripod and throw it out after the shot but decided to pay about double the price of a cheap tripod and bought a cheaper manfrotto tripod. It turns out to be one of the best photography buys I’ve made. What I Luv about it is it’s trigger locking mechanism on the ball head. It’s so simple to set up and adjust a shot. Whilst mine was designed for smaller cameras and wouldn’t suit Peters needs ( his cameras are so much bigger/heavier than mine) I’m still happy with it. However if I was in peter’s league I could see the need for giving serious thought to the tripod featured in this video. $0.02

bro 9:32 i found out that the nob can be pulled out so you can access it easier then push it back in for the sleek/compact look. also at 7:59 you there is a magnet to the hook so you can align it properly to get it in as you twist it. hope this helps but thanks for sharing it with us

WoW ! Well then after YEARS and YEARS of tripod disappointment. This looks like the real deal .Even at that slightly steep price point what a pleasure to carry around, store and naturally lets not forget actually set up and USE ! What a time saver ! Carbon Fiber is a cool feature for strength, light weight and reliability but not a must so I would be very happy and probably equally comfortable with the less expensive aluminum model ….because I'm not a millionaire or even really a thousandaire if there were a thing.... I don't know maybe there is I'd be willing to take the title ;) Anyway VERY intuitive and well thought out. Looking forward to the final version. Greatly well produced and entertainingly edited review as always !

Some company is probably going to make a compatible plate with a lever or screw. Hopefully...

hey pete, that little knob can actually be pulled out slightly making it easier to turn just like the knob on an analog watch pulls out a bit. the feature is shown in the KS campaign.

To be fair, the head is NOT going to be level when collapsed unless you have levelled the feet or have a perfectly level surface. You're over-selling it a bit my man.

I like my Manfrotto Element (small version). Roughly the same size, but has that lovely pan lock, so I can pan around for landscape shots quite easily, without the ball head moving and slopping all over. Cost was around 170 Australian dollars, which is like 155 Canadian and also included tax.

No need for Allen key! replace the existing plate screw with an $11 D-ring screw. (Nice tip from Tony Northrup).

Thanks for showing us all of the cool features! One request for the future: When you're doing videos where you feature products, can you close down the aperture so that both you _and_ the product are in focus? With your normal shallow depth of field, there were multiple times where you were talking about specific things on the tripod and they were out of focus because the camera generally favors faces. Thanks!

There are some physics you just can't beat: for years professional landscape photographers have been telling us you needed a sturdy and heavy tripod. Even if it broke your back, that's the sacrifice you need to pay to make top dog photos from a tripod. The reason being: the heavier your tripod is, the less susceptible it is to wind or carrying surface vibrations to the camera. Some were even giving the advice even if you already were carrying a sturdy tripod (which of course were far more expensive than the cheap lightweight plastic generic ones), you had to weigh it down even more with weights dangling on the central hook (not sure this would not introduce more vibrations because now you were introducing a free hanging weight more susceptible to catch wind). But anyway, everyone was convinced a sturdy, heavy weight tripod was the way to go. Hey, check it out: now the new fad is all about lightweight carbon fiber tripods. Out with the advice tripods should be heavy and sturdy, that thing needs to be light man. And on top it should cost $ 600 for a concept which is as old since photography, three legs with extensions and a plate on top. And you need a whole bunch of engineers to do this who work four years on this: an incredible breakthrough in engineering that is what it is. Where can I buy this thing so I could fork out $ 600 and put that old rugged tripod (you bought because they said it would last a lifetime) to rest. Out with the old, in comes the new. Guess 10 years from now, landscape photographers will be posting ads those ultralight tripods were a big mistake because they are susceptible to vibrations and we should all go back to those heavy sturdy tripods we have now.

That PD isnt very good. Im selling mine due difficulty aiming at stars. Anything vertical for that matter. Its a 6 of 10.

Love Peak Design products. I have their Everyday 30L backpack and the pro clip to go with it. Only just went and upgraded to a Three Legged Thing Brian tripod. Now I am contemplating this product.

My ocd is tingling by how perfectly designed that tripod is + that carbon fiber looks so sick.

I got one similar to your $1k tripod for $36 lol it's aluminum, even has the flip latches on the legs. the Zomei Q555.

For travel size support I use the Manfrotto Befree Live tripod that comes with a video fluid head that can be leveled on a ball. The plate is the same width standard as used with other popular Manfrotto video heads like the 504HD, which is important for my workflow. It works perfectly for my purposes, and only costs $240. And for still photography or fixed angle video I use the Manfrotto Compact Action Aluminum Tripod. Its head is easy to use and very quick to set up, and the whole thing is only $65. So you could have both of these great tripods for less money than the cheaper version of this PD tripod that doesn't even have a video head. The design is very slick and functional though, that's very true. I'm all set and happy with my gear though, but this is good to know.
