100%. The Revar Cine VND set was one of the best purchases I made last year. And that came right after returning the PolarPro Basecamp. :)

Oh this looks cool. Polar Pro is cool, but it's not nearly as versatile as people make it out to be. When you need that 2nd or 3rd stage without the proprietary mumbo jumbo to get the look you want, PP is out. Just heard about this brand from you, ordered a Lindsey Optics Brilliant Rota-Tray with CP filter and I'm excited to use it in my new matte box. Depending on the results, I might sell the Polar Pros. We'll see. Thanks for this video!

This all sounds cool until you check the prices. Glad I went with PolarPro Basecamp and would upgrade for stage 3 later for added filter or for a gradient filter. If you're starting from scratch then my choice makes sense, I guess. For a pro like you this sounds like a better option so you don't throw your existing, universal filters.

That FX6 footage looks fantastic! You really should do an SLOG3 color breakdown (I'm assuming). The Revar looks pretty good too, the color cast looks rather natural which you can't say for most VNDs. Unfortunately a matte box just seems a bit too bulky for run-and-gun shooting with the A7SIII. Have you ever encountered a VND which introduces very little flaring and X-pattern artifacts?

A Misfit Atom Pola+ would be the most lightweight option. Schneider has a good circular VND, but I have not tested it myself. I'd like to do a basic color stream sometime in the future with sample clips- keep an eye out!

@@robchado Hi Robert. I own a Misfit Atom Pola+ with Schneider True Pol 138mm circular polarizer. Based on your video, if I get a Schneider True Pol Linear 4x5.6 for the front of the matte box I would have this VND setup. Would you suggest getting a Revar Linear to match the Schneider True Pol I have I would be better off getting a Schneider Linear? Thank you. I fear that with these 2 polarizers stacked together, the minimum effect of ND I would have would be pretty high since the polarizers cut lots of light. Is this the case with all the VND filters? I am thinking of this setup for a RED camera but at the moment I have a Ursa Mini Pro G2 with internal NDs. When I am filming indoors I often use ND. I guess for indoors it would be better to use normal ND filters What do you think?

Hey Robert, I appreciate your videos and the amount of technical info you always include. I would appreciate some advice about how you deal with the issue of not being able to use the internal ND's on the FX6 combined with a CP, as it creates horrible color washes in the edge of the frame. How do you setup your matte box when shooting outdoors have ND, CP, Grad ND & filtration? Would appreciate your insight, thank you!

does this make it harder to keep track of precise contrast ratios since you don't know how exact many stops you're reducing exposure by?

How does this compare to the Nisi matte box version? Also if you use a vnd do you still need a circular polarizer to cut reflections or is the light polarized when using a vnd?

Great Video! You mention you use a CPL on the FX6, I’ve been getting horrible results with colour hues in left corner of the image when I use CPL with the built in FX6 VND. I’ve tried about 6 CPL’s and can’t find one that works. I use CPL about 90% of the time with my work. Have you had any issues when shooting with a CPL?

@rusticrivermedia4755
@rusticrivermedia4755 2 года назад
@@readingwaterfilms the issue you're running into is quite common. Unfortunately the FX6/FX9/FS7II/FS5/FS5II which all have the electronic variable ND don't work well with circular polarizers. As great as the electronic variable ND is, its one downfall is that it creates major problems with the image when used with a circular polarizer. While Sony doesn't specifically say this, I personally believe that's part of why the Venice series doesn't have the electronic variable ND and instead has traditional stepped ND. The only way to successfully use a polarizer with the FX6 is with the electronic variable ND turned off. From there if you need ND, you need to add it externally which is what Robert was doing in this video.

@@rusticrivermedia4755 Thanks mate! Yeah I’ve been using a VND+CPL for all my fishing/boating work. Not ideal but it’s getting the job done. I use CPL for 80% of my work so it rattled me a bit when I first got the FX6. Cheers

@@robchado Eh, they all do this, it must be a hard problem to overcome. I would love to just be able to pull it off and get to zero (and put the ND in a hip pouch). By the time you add in all the costs of these high-end matteboxs, I'm better off just buying an FX6.
