This is one the most beautiful cars I have ever seen. I had a friend in school whose father had all those nice Mercedes benz limousine throughout the eighties and ninenties. I particularly remember the 1987 380 sel in similar colour as this one. These were the times in Germany when life was just good.
I’m darn-near speechless, absolutely amazing condition! In the mid-late 80s, when I was in HS, my dad surprised my mother with a 1987 560SL, graphite grey with burgundy leather, as a new daily driver (he drove an ‘86 560SEL). But… she loved her Lincoln Town Car Cartier edition, so she gave me the keys to the SL. They’d gotten me an ‘86 Cougar (w/5.0 v8) for my 16th birthday, but I drove the SL most days (and got some really snide comments from adults at times, but I know how fortunate I was!). We were always a Lincoln family but the switch to Mercedes in the 80s changed how we thought about cars. I kept the SL through college, and am now on my 19th Benz, a W222 S with an SL63 on order. These cars, like the subject vehicle, are simply the best, IMO… whomever buys this brown S will love it I’m sure!
Hey Wayne could not agree with you more regarding the 280SE. Had an '80 model and although it wasn't as quick as a 450 or 350 even the 280 never gave me problems or angst on the Autobahn. Fast, quiet, smooth and stable the S was/is a the best high speed cruiser bar none. Currently have an E430 4MATIC in the stable. Somewhat smaller but a stealth cruiser happy at 200km/h all day. And with the same high speed crusing qualities of its larger brethren. Mercedes really was 'das Beste oder nichts'! Sadly current models hold little interest. Technological tour s de force 4 sure but seems marketing now rules where once engineers held sway. Won't consider getting any new Mercedes now even though we have many more model choices in Germany than available in other markets...
Very nice W116 my dad used to have one exactly like this but his was silver color with black leather. I wish I had it but he sold it back in 2010. It had 347,600 miles on it. His was a 300SD same year as this.
One of the most beautiful designs I owned one for ten years in chocolate Brown and same interior. That wonderful leather scent never faded. She served me well. I’ll be watching for the auction date!
I owned one of these. It was built well. But I had to keep it in 2nd gear to drive hilly roads in town. That 5 cylinder engine was very weak in pick up. Beautiful, well put together cars.
Amazing!! I’m in Europe, I actually prefer the US-spec look. US-spec Mercedes are always fully loaded, what I’ve never understood is why rear headrests were never included in the standard equipment, the interior looks so much better with them.
YES IT'S TRUE-IT'S MAGNIFICENT, SORRY I DON'T HAVE THE FUNDS TODAY RIGHT NOW TO stop anyone else from buying ( lol ) anyway, i will have the funds come April 2024, I will track the new owner if it's bought any day now.-love the review too.
@@jkoysza1 Yes…But that DIDN’T fly in North America nor was it deemed scientifically safe! Hense Mercedes fitted ALL North America models with the larger bumpers…!
OMG, the car definately needs the original non US bumper. This ridicules US bumper regulations have been just a trick by the US car lobby to prevent non US car maker from entering the US car market. The conversions kit´s costs around $300-600.
How do you keep getting all these gems? My god, man. Listen, I just have one question. The day I come across a tidy sum of money, can I just call you and throw an obscene amount of money for something like this? I don't even want you to put it up for auction. I just want you to put my number in your phone and give me first crack at every gem of a Mercedes-Benz classic like this. Seriously, you're within the first 7 phone calls I'd make the day that happens.
I bought a nut & bolt restoration '69 GTO in #1 condition. It's was as spectacular as this. I was so scared to drive it, it made me shake. I then bought 2 chevelles to go along with it. While being careful I put a scratch on the GTO. The paint was more spectacular than when new. I was devastated. I then stored them in climate controlled space. I just couldn't drive them anymore. After about 5 years I got rid of them. My daily driver is a 2002 Honda Accord. I sleep better now.
@@victorblock3421 I owned a Rolex for a while. It felt like what you described. I was far too worried about it. I switched to Breitling. Don't care what happens to it. I also own an Accord, a 2020. :)
As a car freak, especially a Benz lover, of course I appreciate the condition of the car. But as I always say, cars are meant to be driven! Sitting in a garage for 44 years? What purpose did it serve to the original owner??
All we could find in this size at the time. The original 14 inch Bundt wheels and the date coded original Pirelli tires are with the car also. They are pristine, but flat spotted and rock hard.
