In this video, Chad Little, shows you the best placement for your guitar strap pin and how to install it for the best look, most comfort, and greatness overall experience. While somewhat controversial, the location suggested in this video is based on over 30 years experience playing acoustic guitar professionally.

Like your straps and your intentions. As a finish carpenter that location is not the best for sturdiness. The heel of that neck is typically end grain, which if you have ever used a splitting maul you always drive the wedge into the end grain and thus separates the wood. The stronger and safer method would be to run the screw threads perpindicular to the grain. All hat and no cattle leaves your guitar on the floor!

Never had a problem with this location...after 30 years of playing. Not to mention, many guitar makers/manufacturers put their pins here.

I liked the video. I watched Dave Doll at Martin Guitar and watched a lot of guitar pin placement videos and the general consensus was to install it like yours was previously. I have a Martín 00015SM 2021 that needs a pin installed. The display of a nice Strap is important for looks but it also seems functional as well. I will give this much pondering 🤔 as this Martín is a treasure. I’m glad I tuned in. Thanks

@@charliequinonez2829 I decided not to install a strap screw and then I sold it, to a fingerstyle performer, she loves it. My GCPA4R is all that is needed for now.

With the button on the bottom side of the guitar, does it still fit in the guitar case? And being that you're drilling into the heel in the weakest portion of it, what do you do when the heel splits? Just a question. Thanks for the video.
@eradawnboots

We drill it to keep it from splitting.

I have seen guitars with the button on the back of the heel before, but I do not recommend it. I just got a guitar that needs this button, but the end of heel is pretty thin. In this case, the wood could indeed split. 2 cm wide at the centre and it's capped with a piece of plastic and it's 0.5 cm shorter than the body itself. Besides: Did you try to play and push the neck forward ? The strap could come off. Just keep it where it was, turn the strap to the other side and there will only be a small twist.

The pilot hole prevents the wood from splitting. Never had the strap come off over decades of playing this way.

@@eradawnboots I just did not want to rik it with a heel this thin. Besides ... people do a lot of weird things with their guitar, while on stage.

The strap is just twisted at the neck in this video.. If you just took that end off and twisted 180 degrees outward, it would be just fine. I personally like it this way but it's all a matter preference.

What I don't like about that position is it tends to tilt the guitar forward but the side position gets in the way when you play higher frets. Neither is perfect for me, lol.

I feel like he has his strap twisted the wrong way intentionally in the beginning to make it look worse with the strap button original position.

Great video but for me personally, I find the bottom of the heel where you put the strap button makes the guitar unbalanced and has a tendency to tilt and tip in the playing position which means (for me anyway) that I'm constantly 'fighting' the guitar while I play. The original position angled on the side of the heel is much better. Yes, it slightly twists the strap as you say but the balance is much better, especially when playing a full set

OMG never ever put the strap pin through the heel cap...not as structurally sound and could split the heel...plus, I have seen it affect resale value. Who cares about looks, geesh...
@eradawnboots
@eradawnboots 3 года назад
Omg...really? Been playing 30 years like this, never had an issue. Have your opinion...but mine is based on facts. Pilot holes prevent splitting.
@WysteriaGuitar
@WysteriaGuitar 3 года назад
@@eradawnboots Why do think manufacturers like Martin, Taylor, Collings, and almost everyone else recommend and put the button on the side of the heel? It's for structural integrity. I have also known many guitarists who will not buy a guitar with the pin there. I have 40 years experience BTW.
