In this video I’m going to show you how to paint from light to dark in watercolors, because this is probably the best painting process you can use with this medium... I painted this composition of a plate of cookies to demonstrate this approach to how to develop a painting in watercolors.

Hello! I'm Anthony. An independent artist and illustrator based near Paris in France. Watercolor painting was my first passion. So a few years ago I took out my old paints, and rekindled my love for watercolors. I decided to start charting some of my watercolor experiences in the form of my blog, “WatercolorAffair.com” (and now through my RU-vid channel). My objective was to start sharing some of my hard won knowledge in the hope that it will help and inspire others to paint with watercolors!
Thank you for following !

Thank you for this! I have only this year gotten into watercolor painting. There's a particular image I want to paint, but I wasn't sure if I should paint entire objects with their lightest color, and then add the darks in layers - or if I should paint the different values totally separately (i.e. paint the light part its color, then the slightly darker part its color, without the lighter color underneath). I appreciate that you showed the whole process here, so I know that I should paint entire objects (minus highlights protected with masking fluid) their lightest color, and then layer on the darker colors. Thank you so much!

Excellent video! Calming voice over with wonderfully presented info. Exactly what I needed, thank you. That's not even mentioning the privilege of staring at cookies whilst I learn about art 😅

You have become our Thursday afternoon watercolor teacher. It’s been a fantastic way for me to spend quality time with my granddaughters. Yesterday we recreated the split color wheel. The nine year old was so proud of hers: she wondered if you were the kind of teacher that liked to see their student’s work. We then watched you video on lost and found edges and all we wanted after that was cookies! You made them look so delicious. This is going to send them around the bend.......thank you for your work!

One of the best decisions I made in 2020 was to sign up for your Masterclass for Beginners. Your free Watercolor for Beginners posts and accompanying RU-vid videos are excellent supplementary material. Thank you.

Watercolor always looks watery. Great for skies and wet scenes. Weak for cookies and solid things.

@@wezul I’ve modified my view in the last 6 months (old post.) Somewhat. The use of gouache along with transparent watercolor (a la Homer, Marin, et al.) can really help.

This is a dumb question I'm sure but how would you do it with a color that isn't in the browns family? It just got dark brown as a result of adding more pigment, but what if it was, say, red? Do you add black to the red gradually?
