In this episode we're gonna learn why I think one octave scale patterns are some of the most useful things to know when we're learning to improvise. By making use of small scale shapes we can get through the chord changes to Satin Doll, or any other tune, by just expressing the harmony through scales. I'll show you guys the best and most efficient way to learn how to practice scales over jazz standards!
Then, we'll dig into a really interesting chromatic scale concept developed by Barry Harris. I think this way of playing a chromatic scale, or adding chromatic notes to our major scales, is absolutely genius! It's much more musical and useful than the traditional "bebop scale" methods you might be familiar with. We'll learn how the concept works and then learn all five major scale shapes we'll need to use it on Satin Doll.
Finally, I'll take you guys through an etude I wrote using tons of chromatic notes and some pivot arpeggios that I taught back in Guitar Fundamentals ep. 3. This way, we can hear how to use the chromatic concept in order to play lines that move across chords and resolve properly instead of just playing from one chord to the next.

Hi David, thanks for your excellent, clear jazz guitar videos! I’ve known about the Barry Harris chromatic scale for a while, but it was this video that opened up my horizons on how to make use of it to improvise. I do have a question… could you share the tool you’re using for the music notation (with the synched cursor) inserted in the video? Thanks again!
@dsg_studio
@dsg_studio 8 месяцев назад
Glad you found it helpful! It's a brilliant system for understanding chromaticism in jazz. I use sibelius to write the notation, and then I actually animate the cursor manually in my editing software. It's a little tedious, but it gives a really clean result.

@@dsg_studio you’re welcome. May I ask what app?
@dsg_studio
@dsg_studio 5 месяцев назад
@NelsonRiverosMusic oh I actually use canva for that as well. I use vegas edit for video editing and the plugin selections are not as nice as Adobe so I just make stuff bespoke. Takes a little extra time but it's a cleaner result for less money than Adobe costs per month
