i use thicker "commercial" grade. They feel good ,they last longer, not fragile.I do have some that are very thin and the stem so long and thin, you feel like they'll break as you fill it
I've washed Zaltos and other high end ultra thin crystal wine glasses in the dishwasher hundreds if not thousands of time and never broken one there - the biggest risk is my wife beating me to the unloading and the taller ones catching on the rails of the layer above. But, I've broken countless expensive and not so expensive by trying to wash them manually. My 2c: Always in the dishwasher. Never seen any clouding from any of mine due to it, either.
I prefer Gabriel Glas Gold over Zalto. GGG is much better balanced in my hand compared to Zalto. Also tried Jancis Robinson’s The One glass. The stemless glass is lovely for water with dinner, but the stemmed wine glass is too thick, and heavy;. I thought they might be good for port or sherry, because the mouth is narrow, but no. GGG is my preferred wine glass.
Possibly (or light reflection maybe?) but also keep in mind they did drop/fall tests with these glasses as part of the review process. I put multiple hand blown stems from Zalto, Gabriel and Glasvin in my dishwasher every day and I’ve been fine on cracks. I’ve also whacked a few on cabinets, countertops, sink edge, etc while putting them up and haven’t had one break.
@@Jonas-cd4hf yeah pretty much - most days I don’t “drink,” I taste & spit. Hand blown glasses are much more durable than machine made relative to amount of glass. My 21 month old hit my Zalto BDX with a ball and knocked it over last week. Spilled wine everywhere but glass didn’t crack.
So any all-purpose wine glass is good as long as you like the look and feel of it and anything too specific is just snobbery that doesn’t really affect the taste/experience
They criticized the abundance of varietal-specific glasses, but they never suggested in any way that any all-purpose wine glass is good. They taste tested these glasses and eliminated most of them at that stage. Their pick is a cheap glass with a good shape that they felt dispersed aroma well
