The BEST Wireless N64 Controller! Play on original Nintendo 64 console, Switch, Mister FPGA, Saffun

Nintendo's NSO Switch controller always seems to be out of stock, but I review an alternative. The Saffun 2.4GHz wireless N64 3rd party controller is compatible with the original Nintendo 64 console and memory pack via the N64 receiver, as well as USB receiver for PC emulation, Mister FPGA and Raspberry Pi. I tear it down and measure latency to see how it measures up against an official wired controller. I bought the controller primarily to use on original N64 hardware therefore I haven’t extensively tested on the switch to see if it behaves like the NSO pad in the official N64 emulator.
I also test out a new AliExpress wireless controller and SPOILER ALERT it sucks. I wouldn't be so critical given the price, but the fact that the much superior alternative exists makes this controller redundant in my opinion.
All products were purchased by myself and I did not collaborate with any company in making this review, with no affiliation confounding my opinions.
For those having trouble connecting the Saffun N64 controller to the Nintendo Switch, try the following:
Turn on wired controller options in system settings:
System settings-controller and sensors-pro controller and wired communication-select ‘ON’
Then try resetting the controller, insert the receiver into the dock and hold the receiver’s pairing button which should make the LED flash fast for pairing mode. Press start on the controller. If pairing successful, the red LED lights on both receiver and controller will stop flashing and will be solid red. Make sure the controller is charged. If all else fails then contact the seller

For anyone having trouble connecting to the Switch, these are the steps you need to follow: 1. Using an official Nintendo Controller, go to [System Settings > Controllers and Sensors > Pro Controller Wired Communication] and make sure it's switched [ON]. 2. Plug the USB Receiver into the Switch Dock and wait for it to start flashing. 3. Press and Hold the [SYNC] Button on the Receiver until it starts blinking faster. (Can take longer than you'd expect, keep holding it!) 4. Press the [RESET] Button on the Top of the Controller (or Back if it's lying down). - The 1st LED on the Controller should start to flash. 5. Press the [Start] Button on the Controller and wait for the 1st LED to stay lit. 6. Hold the [Start] and [A] Buttons on the Controller for about 3 seconds, until the 2nd and 4th LEDs light up together. - This turns on 'Mode C', telling the Switch that the Controller is a Switch Pro Controller, and setting the Buttons to the default N64 Configuration. - LED 2 and 4 should stay lit together for a short while, before reverting to the default display, which shows which 'Player' the Controller is connected as: LED 1 means Player 1; LED 1 and 2 together means Player 2; LED 1, 2 , and 3 together mean Player 3; and all 4 LEDs together means Player 4.

Thanks for the love! For a wireless DC controller, I’m using an Ipega SW025 with a Brook Wingman adapter. It’s the closest controller I’ve found to the look and feel and has 6 face buttons for fighters like MVC2, but required some button remapping. The joystick is super loose and sensitive, but the 2 analog sticks at least makes Quake Arena playable. I’m still holding out for something better. The Retro Fighters StrikerDC controllers are a missed opportunity IMO as they lack a right analog stick and a DualShock controller paired with the Brook adapter has more quality of like improvements for FPS’s. Let’s hope Retro-bit or Saffun pull through. Thanks again for the kind comment.

Just got mine in the mail recently and played with it a bit, definitely worth the cost over trying to get a second nso controller. So glad i found this, i needed a second controller and didnt want to spend 50 on a brawler 64 that wasnt even the original design :( The instruction manual was pretty good for telling how to connect to the switch. I loved getting an extra stick, i didnt realize when you pointed it out in video so was pretty excited. I agree it feels slightly more squishy, but overall not dissimilar. I compared it to my NSO controller and its just slightly lighter, the plastic feels the same as my nso controller did when new (my original N64 controller was a hand-me-down so i never really held new ones as a kid since my dad didnt trust me not to break them) like, if you put a box over my hands with this controller in my hands, i might think its a bit weird but probably wouldn't notice too much just because of how well it controls.

I've noticed nobody ever tests the biggest problem areas with these controllers. Mainly that the sticks sometimes skip steps along the way and it causes certain fast movements to not work. The easiest ways to test are to make sure you can double backflip in Dolphin Park in Wave Race, Smash Attack consistently in Smash Bros, and Spin Attack consistently and repeatedly in a loop in OoT/MM. Every third party controller I've ever tried has failed these stick tests.

Another question. When you say you CANT use rumble and memory pack at the same time. How does that translate into your experience as you're playing a game? Do you have to get up and walk to the receiver to insert and remove the memory pack in between gameplay so that the rumble will work? Or is there a switch to turn one or the other off for a second?
@MarcoRetro316
@MarcoRetro316 Год назад
You can leave the memory pak plugged in and you need to choose between rumble or memory by toggling the switch on the receiver. Once you turn on the console the switch doesn’t do anything and you need to unplug the receiver, toggle the switch and re-plug it to change functions. Most games look for a memory pak in player 1 port only so plugging the pak into a second controller will only work for some games. Pretty much if it’s a game I need to save then I’ll put the receiver into memory mode and leave it, and if it’s a casual play session then rumble mode

@MarcoRetro316
@MarcoRetro316 Месяц назад
Thanks! Someone replaced their motor with one from an original Rumble Pak for a stronger intensity. But you’re after less intensity? I feel like the rumble is just right but it’s subjective. I wonder if it’ll operate at less voltage the same way a 12v fan will run quieter at 5v. You could test with a variable resistor potentiometer and see if it operates at less intensity.

@MarcoRetro316
@MarcoRetro316 8 месяцев назад
I’ve never let it go completely flat so I don’t know if you get a warning flash. While it’s charging, the first red LED blinks very slowly, then the light stays on when it’s fully charged. It otherwise puts itself to sleep after a few minutes of inactivity so there’s no on/off button, and you turn it on with the start button and it starts looking for the receiver

I've been so disappointed by Bluetooth controllers over the years that I simply tuned out from wireless altogether. But I came to watch the video because it's you, and when I heard "2.4GHz", I got intrigued. Yes, F the N64 wireless from Nintendo, tit's never in stock, I tuned out as well. And F that weird ass controller with the useless handle, now that's some wacky stuff. I love that stick there, I have a generic one here (wired) with that same stick and it's awesome. I know it's not like the OG, but man, I still love it. The d-pad was trash, and yes, it does matter for Mortal Kombat, but I swapped it with an original from a broken controller and it became my go-to pad. And I laughed my ass off big time when you mentioned the dreaded aspect ratio police - they're out there patrolling, man! Watch out! I too indulge in Mario Kart 64 widescreen, all the time. It's my favorite Mario Kart entry. Too bad Mario 64 slows down with it on, last I cheeked. With those ugly bulky receivers, my solution for elegance is to use a controller extension, run it down and under the console and hide them out back. Anyway, another banger video as usual! Thanks for sharing.
@MarcoRetro316
@MarcoRetro316 Год назад
I’m team 2.4Ghz all the way. Bluetooth connections get disrupted from my own feet getting in the way if I’m reclined. Glad the aspect ratio police came off light heartedly. I didn’t think to use extensions going to the back and hidden. I’m sure they’d be fine but always worries me keeping all of them plugged in when I’m only needing 1 controller in case the receivers are collectively drawing excessive current. Probably negligible but I modified my rumble pack to power from the controller without needing batteries. I figured Nintendo would’ve done that themselves if they deemed it safe enough. Thanks heaps for checking out the video and dropping in.
@crt_rex
@crt_rex Год назад
@@MarcoRetro316 Same here, 2.4GHz when wireless, but personally, I've been going down the wired route for a long time now, because there's a problem with wireless you have lots of consoles and controllers. Sometimes it takes a while for me to revisit a console, and I have a lot of controllers in boxes, as I collected controllers only before getting back into consoles. Anyway, whenever I get to play another console after I beat a game, any wireless controllers I have are dead by then, as I have no time to babysit all the wireless controllers in boxes to keep them charged. In other words, I'm always having to charge them when I use them, so I decided, why bother then, I'll just stick with the wired controllers then. Yes, I avoid leaving anything plugged in, and that includes consoles, because on some of them, like my N64 and SCPH-5903 PlayStation, the PSU stays warm even when the console is off. And as a fellow owner of BVM/PMVs, I always unplug them, especially if the tally light isn't working. I have the same deal with the battery free rumble pak, I was just told you can only have one at the time though, I'm sure you're aware of that anyway. I only have one to avoid any mishaps, not sure if plugging two damages your N64 somehow.

I don’t have steam but I just downloaded RA to test if mine works. I plugged in the USB receiver where it connected as usual with only 1 LED and the controller wouldn’t show in the MS Game Controller app. Then held Start and B for a few seconds until the first and second LED’s on the controller were illuminated - this switches it into X or D input mode, I’m not sure which one it was in but this made it useable. Then I disconnected the USB receiver and reconnected it and the MS Game Controller application now reads it as an 8bitdo FC30 Pro. I tested with Mupen64 in RA and the Z button works

Plug the USB Receiver into the Switch Dock and wait for it to start flashing. 3. Press and Hold the [SYNC] Button on the Receiver until it starts blinking faster. 4. Press the [RESET] Button on the Top (or Back if it's lying down) of the Controller, the 1st LED o nthe Controller should flash. 5. Press the [Start] Button on the Controller and wait for the 1st LED to stay lit. 6. Hold the [Start] and [A] Buttons on the Controller for about 3 seconds, until the 2nd and 4th LEDs light up.
