My favorite film . No shoot outs / car chases / over the top special effects / Just a superb story with characters you can identify and empathize with . An excellent example of great film making . A rating of 10 is not high enough . This trailer does not come close to representing how truly great this film is . I 've seen it over 10 times since first discovering it over 60 years ago , I turned 77 in August 2021 , and I never tire of watching it . An incredible film .

Well yeah none of that as the movie isn’t about any of that 🙄🙄🙄. Plenty of movies had those things you mentioned. This no as it’s not noir or action sheesh lol

First saw this on TV as a little kid back in the 70s. I remember watching it and feeling a little let down that there were no war scenes and that it was so long. None-the-less, it held my attention the entire way through. Didn't understand it all, but I could tell I'd witnessed something profound. Later, I peppered my dad, a WWII vet, with questions about the film. He patiently and cordially answered them but wasn't super enthused about it. I got the vibe his war experiences still affected him emotionally. He mentioned having troublesome dreams kind of like what Fred Derry had. Amazingly, he seemed completely unaware of the film. I suspect this film hits a little too close to home for a lot of vets. I watch the film like once a year. Makes me cry every time.

2mwillis Ahead of its time. In 1946, veteran William Wyler directed this masterpiece which focuses on PTSD, though it wasn’t called that back then. 3 veterans come home from the war and the adjustments they and their families have to make.

What a film! I can't believe I never heard of this film until I was in my 40's. It seems the only film from the 1940's you ever hear about is Casablanca. Well, I think this is better than Casablanca.

Absolutely, there are many famous movies from the 40's! I guess I just meant that it seems like Casablanca is in all the famous film montages and makes all the critics' best lists. (It is a good movie.) I knew about Casablanca when I was a teenager in high school, but never heard of Best Years till I was about 43 years old and found it by accident one day on Amazon! It's just a shame that this film has been overshadowed by so many others.

Of all the memorable characters in this great film, I liked Myra Loy the most. It seems that she was able to summon all of the talent of her entire, long movie career in this one film, and with the assistance of a stellar cast and the masterful direction of William Wyler, well, this was the result... ultimate film perfection. A "must see" for anyone interested in great stories and inspired filmmaking.

It didn't hurt Myrna to be playing off Fredric March. She is great in this film, we were shown this movie, among other epics in a Telecommunications class at Michigan State. My professor, Jim Cash went on to some acclaim of his own, turning out the screenplay for "Top Gun", "Legal Eagles" and "The Secret of My Success" in the next several years. To get a 4-point from a guy who would let you bum Pall Mall straights is a great memory, like the classics he presented to us.

@@JohnSmith-op1tc A course. I knew I'd be harshly criticized for this remark! March anchored the entire cast. Just too many great performances to mention in this film. Even Virginia Mayo (NOT one of my favorite actors) gave what was perhaps the finest performance of her life, no doubt due to the superior direction of Willie Wyler, who brought this entire miracle together.

I came here in June 2020 with masks still mandated everywhere and most of the businesses shut or crippled, nobody able to meet or date. I just told my son that after the vaccine for Covid works next year, and all the world's pleasures and satisfactions open up again, there's going to be a celebration like when the boys came home from WW2. I thought of this movie. Notice the marriage scenes in the trailer. By 1947, everybody was pregnant. In 2022 I think there will be another Baby Boom.

Interesting. The narration style is like a newsreel coverage of say a boxing match. The promotion is all about the writer, director and actors, not the story, which comes across as a romance rather than a drama about three men having problems fitting back into civilian life after a long and traumatic war. It doesn't show the man who lost his hands or the airplane graveyard, which were the two striking images of the film. Instead it features stock standard passion and fight scenes. So, if I were alive in 1946, this "promo" wouldn't make me want to see what is actually a fantastic film.
