Magma failed me... So I bought a different grill or my boat! This isn't sponsored. I spent my own money. You can follow me on Twitter for pictures and videos that don't end up on RU-vid / cullencraft
I love that you weren’t afraid to return that first one. This is where buying from an off shore company can pay off, Big time! Very interesting how it ran so Hot at first!
Was getting close going to West Marine (probably the very same one you returned your Magma at) on 17 in Jacksonville and buying a Magma. But then I saw your last video and this one here. Probably saved me a ton of aggravation and for that, Thank you sir!
Hi Cullen, from California hear. Wow , love the new grill. Damm, making me hungry. Aren’t you glad the old grill didn’t work out? Watch natural gas appliances on boats. Now, you can have some B.B.Q. ‘S with friends and family. On the West Coast , liveaboards are becoming increasingly popular. Average cost for 1 room with kitchen privileges & private bath runs $1000-$1200 per month. The Yacht business is picking up. If your boat is paid off, average cost for slip rent and utilities about $1000 per month. I pay $8.00 per linear foot for 37’ slip without live aboard option.
Looks great! I showed my husband and he likes as well but he wants to keep the magma for now. I told him since we haven’t used it yet it’s not too late to return. Anyways if it doesn’t work out this will be the next one!!!
Have been enjoying your videos on the boat for a while now. To assist in the burger cooking fully through and not getting a burned exterior, make a dimple in the middle of the burger so it is thinner than the exterior. The meat exposed to direct heat causes the edges of the patty to shrink, cinching the hamburger like a belt, compressing its interior up and out which is why it looks puffy like that. Just use your thumb to create the dimple in the middle.
A good bit of kit. It even sounded more chunky than the last one. Cleaning tip. I use a large polythene bag, a small amount of water, and caustic soda for oven racks. Soak em for a couple of hours in the bag, extract and rinse. Easy.
Was looking for alternatives to Magma and found this video. Thanks for the insight. Then I noticed the Main Street bridge behind you! Fellow Jax boater here, I'll wave next time I'm on the Ortega.
See what you made me do?!?!?!?! Damn it sir. hahahahahah (switching over) Thank you for a great review, I loved that you actually made the purchase of Magma, which most people do, didn't like it, reviewed it, then got another brand and used it/reviewed that......Love it man....thank you.....please keep em comin!
Chef Cullen nice job Lock Tite those screws on that grill those underway vibrations may cause things not to end well. not sure what your marina situation is but for someone living aboard if available you need a wall slip put a large grill out patio furniture and extra storage box.
Just stumbled upon your video while searching for grills. Awesome video. Then realized you are fellow Jacksonville peeps. I’m up in amelia island. I’m definitely subscribing to support a fellow “LOCAL” boater. Great channel.
👍Me again, just wanted to let folks know this grill is large. Much larger than it looks on camera. I think I want the 216 or maybe the 160 version, not sure yet, still assessing the situation. 🤔. I definitely 😍love Kuuma😍better than the Magma. Wishing you ‘ your viewers happy grilling. 👍😃💝
You 100% right by getting rid of the other grill for this one i really like and it looks really good perched on the back railing thumbs up all the way 👍
Sweet deal on the second grill! I was just noticing that it's been over a year since you got the boat and it hasn't sunk! Congrats! Keep the videos coming! I don't have instagram to follow you there, sorry.
Cullen Craft you were smart and seasoned it with some nice fat burgers. Good first layer of flavor for that grill. 😂. Also made me start looking at ordering one. Problem with my boat is the versatrack system. I’m gonna have to mod an adapter to attach the grill to because I don’t have rails. I’ve already been turning gears in my brain how to easily make an adapter to work with my versatrack rails on my V-20 targa fishing boat. I Imagine fresh grilled halibut or salmon while still On the water fishing.
Different subject. Where did you take the carbs? The place for rebuilding carbs is National Carberator , if you took them there can’t imagine taking two weeks but at least they will be right.
I had this grill on my last boat. Was excellent! Definitely burns hotter than a home/ full size, but once you figure out it's personality it's great. (They ALL burn hot!). Only issue I had was that the stainless became hazy in and orange-y/stained from heat-way and I could not get it off. Tried every RU-vid method. Nothing. Still looked great just had this haze in places, which didn't affect performance. Definitely take the propane off and use care when screwing it on and off. The regulator is a weak point and will become rattle-y if abused. I replaced mine (after I tried to adjust the rattle and dropped it in the sea). I just ordered a Large Dickinson BBQ for my new boat, but only because it comes recommended and the Kuuma 160 is sold out everywhere locally!
Awesome. Yeah I've learned theres a hidden adustment screw on the regulator underneath the sticker. That helped a little, but mostly I've learned how to cook well with higher heat.
Love the videos on grills. Do you think the main issue on the Magma grill was the rattling? I bought the Magma Cabo grill, but I’m mounting mine in to the fiberglass on the port side of a 26’ ft Walkaround. Wish me luck!
The rattling was the final straw, but I was personally just underwhelmed. It would probably be just fine for other people. To each their own. Good luck!
I am still using my 10 year old Magma grill. I have been using it almost daily for the past three years since I retired. If that grill is still good in 5 years please post and update.
Magma uses the most expensive grades of stainless steel which last nearly forever in the marine salt environment even with the extreme heat found inside a grill. It's not cheap though, because of that and also magma can charge whatever they want because of their reputation and the reality of the marine marketplace. You can find a 20 or more year old magma grill at a garage sale that has been on the rail of a saltwater boat that whole time and about all you will need to replace is the burner and be good to go again. This is how we got ours. The burner was $20 online on sale for a genuine Magma replacement. Don't buy at WestMarine as it will be twice that. I doubt these "better" grills will hold up like this at these prices since there is no way they can br using such good material at those prices. Most are made of genuine Chinesium. They probably do grill a little better and don't rattle like the magmas though. IMHO The Magma kettle grill seems to be a better design than the larger rectangular one and doesn't rattle like that. Defender often has sales and blemish/scratch and dent deals on the Magma kettle grills for well under $200.
Wasn't the propane or the regulator causing excess heat. It was hot due to the grease from the burger hitting the "flavor maker" panels underneath the meat and then igniting. If you were cooking something non greasy or had the grill been empty, the temp would have been "normal". I suggest thinner meat patties so that it cooks through quicker or cooking just a couple at a time so that you can move the meat around when the grease ignites. Also, use the top rack strategically.
I'm buying one and I'm going to plug your channel maybe they will sponsor you. Your welcome in advance 👍 I just bought a 1973 Chris craft 33 cabin cruiser
It isn't right now haha I took off the carbs to get rebuilt by a shop in town. There wasn't really any problem, but they absolutely needed a retune and might as well make them brand new while I'm at it
It does look to me when the lid is closedw that there is a lot of space between lid and base, and perhaps it's not very well sealed towards the front. What are your thoughts about that?
Magma uses super high quality stainless steel that just lasts nearly forever. I wonder if these competitors cheap out on the stainless. If you are on saltwater you'll know in a few years. Is that mount made of aluminum? It looks like it might be. Aluminum and stainless steel absolutely don't get along when touching in a saltwater environment. Aluminum in contact with stainless steel will suffer galvanic corrosion
Not sure if anyone has mentioned this previously, but I would be concerned with the 2 thumb screws that are used to mount the grill to the bracket. They could fall out from vibration etc. Have you noticed them wanting to loosen up on their own ?
You need better grill tools, first of all. You can put the buns on the top rack to warm them up while the burgers cook. The grill will be great in the summer so you don't heat up the cabin cooking in the oven.
It looks like the price has gone up, unfortunately. I don't know if my comparison to magma is apples-to-apples anymore www.hodgesmarine.com/kuu58173-kuuma-316-elite-gas-grill.html?gclid=CjwKCAjwyaWZBhBGEiwACslQo3Sgeusvhrb8e7H2XXY7A6T7PzEyo63Ye4IYv2wd-n-M0qeBCZpdtxoCcDoQAvD_BwE
Get rid of those little coleman bottles. Go to camping world and they sell. A 3 gallon compact propane bottle and an adapter hose that will connect right up

Hard to find out what he pays for things, does anyone know what his cost of the boat was, his transport cost and does he keep a tally of his repair costs?
Transport was about 3,500 all in. Repairs and maintenance have cost about 4,000 over the last year. I do all my own work so that keeps costs down a little bit. The marina is 500 a month.
Hey Cullen, this has nothing to do with your grill video. Just a suggestion, since you are in Jax and into older boats maybe you should do a video on Huckins boats down in lakeshore. Might be cool to see a US boat mfg that is approaching a 100 years in business. Just a suggestion! Keep the vids coming!
The cover itself is an option.... And you can just - buy them in different colors? "You know nearly had me on books till you got to color options on the book bag XD"
@@CullenCraft I like your addition of cumin but don't pack the burgers to tight and make them larger circumference so when they shrink they not reduced to a large ball. :) MMMM Tasty
Enjoying your channel. Keep up the great work. I recently joined the Freedom Boat Club and the wife and I are always making the trip to RCB. We’d love to buy you drink one day. My BFF is a RU-vidr so I understand your journey. Check out @hamiltonvillefarm
This goof sent back the made-in-usa grill that is pretty much the industry standard for a reason and bought a made in thailand grill that is known to not last a full year in marine environments. This is what's wrong with America.
What's wrong in America is the shitty grill that was made here The kuuma is still going strong 3 years later and the magma wasn't even worth firing up once. Maybe america should make better stuff.
😫Dddduuuuude how are you gonna buy that great grill, make what looks to be amazing food & burgers and then use FAKE SQUARE PLASTIC CHEESE those great looking burgers!!! 😫😭
