The Biblical Basis for the Priesthood w/ Dr. John Bergsma 

I'm also from Germany, and sincerely thinking and praying about becoming Catholic. I recently had a conversation with two Catholic guys, that really started to separate from the Church. I was the one defending Catholicism, and offering some points of reconciliation. At the end of our hour-long conversation they both said that they really had come closer to coming to peace with their Catholic faith again. That was one of the most ironic episodes I had so far in my life. Gottes Segen aus Jena! J.

Same-same. Or even the seeking Evangelical viewer. I truly believe the Holy Spirit works through Matt's approach. In fact, I know He does. I came into the Church just over a month ago after 40 years of wandering in the Protestant desert. This show was instrumental in my conversion.

That's a big part of why I respect him and regularly watch. He really does ask questions and press on points that skeptics like myself (I'm Catholic but find it hard to not be skeptical of almost everything, even if I really dislike most other skeptics and atheists as people and communities) are definitely thinking of when listening. I don't find other hosts and podcasts doing it quite like he manages to do. These discussions are definitely the most interesting in the Catholic media sphere as they hit a lot of the most important points of contention and not just preaching to the choir.

Not really. If you read the bible you can see the horse manure coming out of this guys mouth trying to prove the pagan Roman priesthood. He contradicts the book of Hebrews which addresses very clear the supremacy of our lord christ priesthood over the O.T. priesthood . The church is under the new covenant we as church as individuals our body is the temple of the holy spirit and we offer our body daily as a holy sacrifice to Jesus but not for remission of sin because Jesus did it once and for all. He is our high priest. Theres no biblical support for The Roman priesthood, the R.C.C totally rejects Jesus sacrifice. Read Hebrews chapter 10. repent and run out of the church and accept jesus sacrifice.

@@kronos01ful thanks. I said he makes it difficult. The main reason I listen to Matt is to understand how I can still protest Rome!! Like he says, you don't want to fight strawmen when talking to others. When the pastor complained about not being able to convince people works are important after conversation, the book of James came to mind. I do not think it has to be an us vs them as we make it out to be. Jesus brought people in with poor theology and looking at Peter, we find some continued to have poor theology but are still saved! His spat with Paul shows that..

The Roman priesthood is satanic because it blaspheme the sacrifice and priesthood of Jesus and thr priesthood of the believer to reinstall priesthood thats been nullify. Theres no biblical bases for saying that the apostles became priest .not once jesus commission the apostles to be priest, what he did was to fill them up with the holy spirit to preach the Gospel preach the resurrection. The book of Hebrews clarify this amazing event that now because of jesus we can access God directly with out the need of a priest. Hebrews chapter 10.

I grew up catholic and had nothing ever truly taught to me. A old school catholic grandmother who many times made me feel like scum of the earth. There was no love there and no forgiveness taught just ccd devoid of actual understanding. A bunch of kids who'd rather not be there with parents who just follow the motion s and act like the formula saves them. So I left. I want God and nothing less and after years of growing spiritually and healing in protestantism I am leaning towards orthodoxy. Prayers the Lord would lead me. ❤

In fairness the description here of the priest's role - that shocks Matt - as a face of the people to God and word of God to the people is classic Old Testament theology from Calvin Seminary.

So awesome! One of my sisters walked away from the faith and is a Calvinist ! Years of prayers for her will bare fruit ( God willing ) it’s sad , however I know The Lord is still working on her and her family

@@johnbouwers6787 I converted to Catholicism from "reformed" (deformed) Christianity. You don't have a "kingdom strength", whatever good is in you is residual Catholicism. The Catholic Church is the fullness of the faith and is the Church historically established by Christ.

Oh stop it. True Christians are not taken in by the deceptive talks of Berg and Hahn. Now face it: Catholics are downright deceived --and their biblical basis for the priesthood is UNCONVINCING! They want to establish SOME sort of basis because like all of their other doctrines, it's all based on the FLIMSIEST of implications. If Catholicism is true, then God must speak with marbles in his mouth because he can't just come right out and SAY to rejoice in the sacerdotal priesthood he has created for the New Testament". In any case, the natural antecedent to any discussion on, for example, Transubstantiation, is the question of whether a sacerdotal, New Testament priesthood was even established by Jesus Christ in the first place. If there is no New Testament priesthood, then there is no power to transubstantiate the bread and wine. The Bible is filled with abundant information pertaining to priests. We would certainly expect then, that when we read about life in the New Testament church, something ought to be mentioned relating to a Catholic priesthood if the claim is legitimate. But it does not! The Council of Trent had the gall to assert out of thin air that the New Testament teaches an office of a "visible and external priesthood" (Session 23). EXCUSE ME, but the Bible certainly does not mention any such office, even when listing the offices of the church! (1 Cor 12:28; Eph 4:11; 1 Tim 3:813). Yet out of nowhere, Rome brazenly asserts that right there at table, Jesus ordained the apostles as Catholic “priests” of the New Covenant! (CCC 611, 1337). No he did not! Hebrews 7:11-24 makes clear that the O.T. priesthood has been abolished, and gives no indication of a N.T. priesthood patterned after the now-defunct Jewish priesthood as Rome claims HER prieshood is patterned after (CCC 1541). The O.T. priesthood has been replaced by the eternal priesthood of Jesus Christ, who holds his position "permenantly" (Heb 7:24). The word "permenantly" is the Greek "aparabatos", which means, "unchangeable, not liable to pass to a successor" (Thayer's Greek-English Lexicon). Indeed, the dramatic abolition of the priestly office is seen the very moment Christ died on the cross when the veil in the temple was suddenly torn from top to bottom. In the ancient Jewish temple, the veil blocked access into the Holy of Holies where the presence of God dwelt. Only the priest could go beyond that veil once a year to sprinkle the blood of an innocent animal on the mercy seat of the ark of the covenant which contained God's law that man had broken. But when Jesus died, the torn veil symbolized that every believer was now a priest with full access to his “real presence” any time of day (Heb 4:14-16, Eph 2:18; 1 Peter 2:9), making the "real presence" of Christ in bread and wine, unnecessary and FALSE. We now come by FAITH in his blood (Romans 3:25; Heb 10:22), not by DRINKING his blood, nor by OFFERING his blood repeatedly in the Mass.
