In this video, Dr sanjay Gupta explains what heart failure is, how it is caused, what symptoms and signs are associated with it and how it is best treated. My website is www.yorkcardiology.co.uk
Dr. Gupta is a wonderful doctor, and human being. I consulted with him several years ago by phone, and he perfectly helped me understand the heart diagnosis I had, and completely put me at ease, even though I have a serious health condition. Very grateful to him.
I am the “someone, somewhere” benefiting from your videos 6 years later. I’m a new paramedic in California and your videos offer a lot more than what I learned throughout school. Thank you 🙏🏼
I am in the UK and spent two weeks hospitalized for Heart Failure...I had better treatment and received more information from The EMS than the doctors. The nurses and hospital staff were exceptional.
Sanjay, your videos are PRICELESS! Doctors do not talk to their patients or explain medical issues the way you do and patients are hungry for information and reassurance. You're exceptionally knowledgeable and gifted with the ability to explain things in a simple way and with compassion. Thank you, Doc, and come to America! We love Indian doctors, especially handsome ones! 💖
i am a dentist by profession and understand how your work must be very demanding. i am impressed how you take time out of your busy schedule and help people. kudos !!!
So wonderfully explained the system of failure and symptoms and durations. And building confident to listener. Deep technical points. Explanation of medical terms so nice. I love your talk. Our prayers to your entire family.
I have heart damage from a heart attack almost 30 years ago. In 2012, I had quadruple bypass. My ejection fraction was the same before and after bypass surgery: around 40%. But here’s the deal - I was physically quite active for the 20 years before my bypass, and after the bypass and losing some weight I returned to my favorite form of exercise - cycling. Since then, I have ridden 10,000 miles, up and down hills, averaging about 13-14 mph. I am 72 years old and somewhat overweight. One cardiologist told me that an echocardiogram to check my EF at rest was very low mainly because I have an “athlete’s heart.” Some enlargement of ventricles or other endurance exercise induced changes. I did develop an atrial flutter, which was cured by ablation. I’ve always worried about my very low EF, but my fitness suggests that this may not be a seriously limiting factor.
dr. gupta, you are keeping me from going to sleep. this information is better than a good movie. you are incredible. no dr. has the time to explain all of the intricacies. the heart is an amazing thing, isn't it?
You are a gem. My brother suffers with this. I pray that Father God leads you into more truth. About sickness’s. I feel so loved❤️ Thank you Dr. So much🙅🏽♀️
Thank you for the reference values to help make sense of the various heart test results. Wish all cardiologists were as compassionate and dedicated as you to helping patients and carers understand their health conditions.God bless you sir!
heart failure snuck up on me, because there is a lack of information. Should be posters in every clinic and hospital corridor. I had all the outward symptoms but nothing to warn me. Your videos have been priceless !

Very interesting and informative--thank you for taking the time to educate us on heart failure. You are a gift and your videos are an invaluable source of knowledge.
Thank you so much again to this very important video especially to me,as a heart failure patient.Your the only Doctor explain well about my condition..kudos to you doc!
Thank you so much for the in depth information! I have recently being diagnosed with heart failure after a coronary artery bypass graft. I have been so worried and thought I would die in 5 years time, thank you for explaining this fully, you are amazing.
I'm the same. I was diagnosed a year ago. No infotmation. It's only.now that I have worse symptoms and am a bit scared. I too wish that Dr Gupta were my cardiologist.
Dr Gupta as a patient suffering from heart failure which was diagnosed last September I was placed on a medication regime--the usual potions etc . Last week I presented to my cardiologist for my definitive echo which will give my medic information from that echo if indeed I need to proceed to an implant. You explained in both your vids what info my surgeon will derive from my data in the decision for an implant. As a person with some understanding of organ activities etc you have enlightened me and given me an insight of the jargon and presentation of the if, buts and maybe's of the cardio system--the link to respiratory and renal feedback and so on. I was so pleased to see and listen to a medic sat in his office with no smoke or mirrors which are usually found on the American channels and walking me through the biology given by the echo data. Thank you so much for your time which currently in the NHS is in very short supply. Keep doing what you're doing. Doncaster UK
I was just diagnosed with heart failure with an EF of 35%. I am healthy and I'm only 33. I just had my twins 4 days ago. I am watching this video over and over in the hospital CCU. I am so scared but this video has helped me. Thanks for this video. 😭😭
How is it going now? I learn I was at 24% about a year ago. Too me feels like once I push my luck I hurt for awhile and feel weaker. However, most of the time I forget about it. The doctors told me mine didn't make sense either right after turning 40 (Bet that is still really old to you, lol.). The keep saying the best case was some kind of virus they aren't naming weakened my heart.
I went through MI in the age of 42 went out of hospital with ef 45%. Was going around with mi for two days before i went to the doctor. Im really worried about developing stronger heart failure but everybody here where im taken care of is talking about abilities of heart to regenarate especially in such a young age although don't feel very well. What you can not under appreciate is proper rehabilitation program.
I have CHF since 2010and two weeks ago I was told my EF is 35% I'm a bit scared but I'm talking care of my health and trying to eat healthy...what is EF Right now if I don't mind sharing...
Coming across you Dr Gupta is one of the most beautiful things that have happened to me in 2021. Thanks so much for taking out time to educate us you don't know what you do to some of us you have given me in particular Hope. I am 30 years old and was diagnosed with supraventricular tachycardia and my ecg says I have early repolarization I have so many symptoms that make me feel I'll just drop off and die. I recently subscribed to your channel and I must say I check up on your videos everyday. Thanks for loving humanity this much . You are a God sent
Very very impressed and grateful with how u explain in detail about the problems and functions of the heart. It is so kind and generous of u. The videos are brilliant and u have a lovely speaking voice.
As a second year nursing student who is currently trying to write a case study on heart failure I have found this video so helpful in gaining a better understanding of knowledge before writing my essay.
Thankyou Sanjay ! My father died of heart failure 2015 and got very breathless along with COPD asthma etc . Nothing could be done over many years , although his medications probably kept him going much longer. He finally passed away peacefully but “ feeling absolutely rotten “ , as he said ; with us by his side. I wish he had met you ...😢😪😊☺️. Best wishes xx🌹
Sorry to hear about your father, This video gave me alot of information, my heart doctor doesn't even have the time to discuss things like this. And I ask a million questions! All of you comments are valuable. I hope all is well with you and your family. Happy Holidays to you as well. 1luv Jenn we're in this together.
Hi another good helpfull video...I'm currently awaiting a implant icd.i think...just had my follow up echo..EF 35..male 49 years..I had cardiac arrest november out of hospital..forever greatfull dr omar magdi Manchester cardiac centre...respect dr gupta..
Definitely appreciate your advice. I have aortic regurgitation which has caused 20 percent heart failure/damage. Your words confirm what is going on. I am still exercising but my recovery time has doubled since discovery of my problem. I will continue to follow and just wanted to thank for the clear explanation.
Thank you very much Dr. Gupta. This video was of particular interest to me as I have a sister in the hospital right now with heart failure. She has all of the symptoms you talked about, swollen extremities, breathlessness and she’s very weak. She has diabetes and her blood glucose is very high. This information is very good and gives us hope that she can come through this and live a longer life. Thank you again. I’ve been watching you for a long time and you explain things so they are not difficult to understand. God bless you.
What a interesting video, my father has heart failure and your video blog makes scence to me on whats happening, thank you for posting this information and also taking time to explain what is happening to someone this really helps put everything into perspective for me now.
My father passed away 6 months ago while getting treatment from post-myelofibrosis that had converted to AML. He began his decitabine treatment, and 2 weeks in, they called us in to tell us that his heart had been damaged, and it wasn't properly profusing his organs, and that there was nothing they could do. He passed away 2 days later. He was at Barnes Jewish Hospital, and it's a wonderful hospital. I often wonder if there is anything they could have done to treat his heart failure. But I believe that there must have been no options, or they would have at least tried. This video helped explain a lot. Thank you sir.
Thank you for explaining in such an easy to digest words. My dad is having all those symptoms and we will see the cardiologist next Monday. Hope we're still not too late. Thank you doctor. Appreciate it a lot!
Your explanation has helped me so much, as I have been diagnosed with heart failure. So clear, so balanced, I feel I can accept this unexpected change, having better knowledge, and as a result, more insight into how I can help myself. Thank you so much.
As a pharmacist who is practising in Nigeria, your videos have been amazingly helpful to me in taking care of my patients. They literally take me as a god
Mariah 22 Thank you for the time you take to reassure those of us with heart problems. I have learned so much from watching your videos and feel so much more empowered as a result, when seeing the medics that treat me. Your teaching style is simple, easy and effective and you manage to convey what is sometimes difficult, technical information in an easily understandable way. I think you are brilliant!
I so enjoyed your video, your explications are so clear. I had a heart failure incident once at the ER this past November and have a pacemaker now and heart medications …still very tired, but starting to walk more and for longer stretches. I’ll do some cardio physical therapy soon too. They aren’t sure why I had the heart failure, possibly a virus, but I do have type 11 diabetes and thyroid problems too, which could have caused my collapse. Anyway, thank you again, I’ve subscribed!
🙏Dr Gupta You are an incredible Doctor. Thank you so very much for your videos, every time I get panicky about my heart conditions I watch your videos and I always feel better.
Excellent explanation Doctor, you have put my mind at rest as I was told I had 'heart failure' but very little else. Thank you for taking the time to make the video.
Thank You so much. I had all of the symptoms and had no idea why I was feeling so weak and couldn’t sleep because when I would lie down I felt like I was drowning and not able to breath. I also was swelling extremely bad. I was still going to work as a Educator at the local college. I then started coughing and coughing until foamy pink/ red fluid was coming up. I have always been a hard worker and didn’t take any meds due to no insurance. I knew I had high blood pressure but could not afford it. I had a wonderful student aide who would carry all my stuff from my car and walk me out carrying my stuff back to my car. This day I felt worse than e Er but I had a show opening that night and I was still sewing and fitting costumes. Send The show must go on. I was finally done and beginning dressing for opening night. However, I couldn’t even stand up I was extremely weak and dizzy. Then my student aide became serious and told me I needed Togo to hospital and I was wondering why he was telling me that. He said “ Your turning white and your lips are blue.” I asked him to get me to your car and prayed I would be able to drive home. I called for a ambulance and called my daughter to meet me there. I was taken right in the after telling them what had been going on I was mo Ed to another room and a Dr. came in and said I needed some test right away. The next thing I remember a group ofDoctors came in and explained that I needed surgery and I was lucky to be alive. I was in Congestive Heart Failure . Due to 2 heart valves that were needing to be replaced and I had blood regurgitating into my chest. I was actually to weak to go to surgery. I needed blood transfusions and I needed to get my Power of Attorney done and my will. Thank God those Do tors saved my life. I died on the table had 4 blood transfusions and the surgery was twice as long and I came out on a ventilator for the next week. I was told usually people go home in a week and I was there a month. I’m Thankful for all you Do tors who literally help my heart in their hands. I wore a external defibrillator for 5 mo thx an was strong enough to go back to surgery for a pacemaker and defibrillator. I had to retire and my house was packed up and I live with my daughter. I’m sharing this because if I had gone to the doctor and stayed on blood pressure meds, I might not have died on that table and have my life completely changed.
WOW. How are you doing today? Glad you survived all that!! May I ask how old you are? (Btw, it's a sad commentary on how working class people still can NOT afford to have frigging health insurance!! Our country Needs to Fix this horrendous problem!!!)
I always wondered what is the connection between workings of heart and kidneys. Why people with weak heart experience fluid accumulation in different parts of the body. And did not know whom to ask. Answers to these questions are made available here in such a way that even ordinary people can easily understand. Thanks a lot!
