It's just an unfortunate truth that you tend to remember the bad ones for longer, but that definitely doesn't mean they're all like that. The majority are actually pretty nice and understanding.

I was tempted to say yes but the difference is the monkey doesn't understand what it's doing and would only have taken a picture either by accident or by specific training, without understanding the meaning of the action.

She was allowed to watch through the telescope because Raj allowed it, it was his, and she saw something, didn't know what to do, Raj told her to take the pic, she did, and it happened to be a comet. They discovered it together. Neither one would not have found it without the other. Raj positioned the telescope, Penny saw it and incisted on being it something, and raj confirmed it. Althought raj still could have looked at any point if penny wasnt there.
in the movie "Fools Gold" was mentioned court case: in witch all credits for finding a some valuable cannon on the bottom of the ocean went to owner of diving equipment and not to the person using it and actually finding that cannon/treasure. i know its all fiction, but by this court case references Raj provided the equipment, set it up, knew how to use it, and there fore all credits go to him. i dont know actual law to settle this hence fictional example.
He definitely would have, and if you can remove someone completely from the equation and the outcome is basically the same they haven't contributed anything
@@nickinit9082 the difference is the guy doing the diving put in all the actual work to getting there, the guy offering the equipment probably wouldn't have wound up in the same spot, the diver's decisions are what lead to the discovery, in this scenario if raj had just put out the telescope and told penny how to use it then penny positioned it and focused it and took the picture she would have been the one to discover it, but she didn't, all she did was do what raj told her to do, and that also just so happened to be what he would have done himself, raj not only provided the equipment but put in all of the work and made the decisions that led to its Discovery
What are you talking about... Raj would've discovered it without penny. She didn't give any help positioning the telescope. Raj would've ended up looking through it and saw it

I edited this comment because I was completely wrong. The Comic Factory, the comic store near Caltech that was inspiration for the comic book store in Big Bang Theory it's NOT closing. It seemed that way because they had removed all the posters and appeared to be packing, but it turns out they were just changing the posters and reorganizing the store.

He is amazing, having won 2 TDFs, Four monuments, finishing 2nd in another TDF, and a Strade Bianche. There are a few things left for him to win, more TDFs, more monuments, a Road World Championship, and maybe some of the other Grand Tours. Anything else does not really add to his Palmares. If he could pull win all of the monuments and all of the Grand Tours at least once, and a World Championship, then Merckx is really his only competition, but it looks like that is the case now. Just amazing!
While they both discovered it together, I don't honestly think Penny should be that upset that she wouldn't get much credit for it. Like it would benefit Raj a huge amount within his career and improve his reputation. All it would do for Penny is be something she could brag about, when she doesn't even know what it is.
It hurts her feeling dude. They're friends and he didn't consider settling things with her first. That's exactly like the time when Sheldon referred him as the mind behind the paper of him with Leonard, even though their contribution was the same.

Penny wouldn’t even know that it was a comet if Raj didn’t say so. Not to mention that Raj positioned the telescope, knew that it was a new comet and it’s Raj’s career. All Penny did was look and press a button when Raj instructed her to (and like Raj said, even a monkey can do that).

He set up all the equipment, positioned it, and if penny hadn't been there he would have been the first one to look through and would have recognized it, if someone shoved hooke out of the way of the microscope and took a look at what he had set up right before he could did they discover cells dispite the fact that hooke was the one that made everything possible and without that person there he would have been the one to look in and observe cells for the first time?

Under the rules established by The Simpsons (who always do it first), Penny discovered the comet, in Bart's comet as punishment he was helping principle Skinner as he set up a telescope and was observing the night sky, after stepping away to try and grab his big butt balloon Bart used the telescope, saw something, called it in and discovered HIS comet.

The science community would probably agree with Raj. Even Leonard pointed out that Raj was the one who determined it was a comet. Scientists have assistants help them with their research all the time and those assistants don’t usually get credit. The same logic applies here
According to the Supreme Court yes, if the monkey takes the picture it is property of the monkey. Even if a human set up the camera, and even instructed it to take the picture.

This in my opinion is why I personally think Raj got more meaner and more of a jerk later and longer the show went on because imagine if you have a boat and you let some friends borrow it to go fishing and one of your friends ends up discovering a new species of fish and gets all this recognition and you try to take the credit even though you were not there and you were not the one who discovered the fish
False equivalency. In Science, Me See First, Me Discover is not universally classified as having discovered something. That is only when it comes to land claims and even then it's far more complicated. It was Raj who told Penny to take the picture on HIS telescope, it was Raj who postulated what it was, and then it was Raj who confirmed it as a previously undesignated comet. Penny may have been the first to observe it however Raj was the one who uncovered the comet, therefore he is the discoverer. For example, many people in ancient times observed these red and rusty yellow hues in the sky and assumed them to be something, even writing their own scripts about their speculations as to what they were, however it was Galileo who properly observed and identified these hues in the sky as what we know them as today, the planets of Mars and Venus respectively and as such, the scientific community generally credits Galileo with the discovery of the planets and why he is credited as the Father of Modern Astronomy, among other reasons. I personally disagree with the notion that you can discover something even if you have zero fucking clue what it could be or notion of it being previously unseen phenomena.

All Penny did was tell Raj that she saw something. Raj is the one who told her to take a picture and he later determined that it was a comet. Penny had no idea what she was looking at but Raj did.
Penny was wrong once more in this scenario. She didn't have the first clue of what she was doing, all the preparatory work was made by Raj with his expertise and he is the one who knew what it was in the end. By the way he could have looked in the telescope at any point during the night so he would have seen it eventualy. Imagine this scenario with anything, like, for example : a microbiologist creates an experiment, waiting for the results, the microscope is suited to detect a slight change, and a friend who doesn't know shit about his field of expertise is the first one looking in it, saying "there is some stuff" and yet he would like to be credited for a discovery ? Doesn't make any sense. Penny was really hateful in that episode.
To be fair Penny's character is self absorbed and whiny and Raj is shy , weak and emasculate . Note that he told her it would ruin his reputation yet she got what she wanted so she just smiled and left , Raj would rather give others what they want than stand up for him self due to having little pride or dignity from a life of being physically and verbally bullied .
