Remove the laugh track and witness one of the most grim and unsettling series emerge.

This is true for most shows with a laugh track (I saw an episode of Friends with the laugh track removed and it was the first time I ever consistently laughed at an episode of the show) But, yeah, that would immediately make the show better, even if its quality would be unintentionally gained at that point

Eshwar Raj I get why people would be critical that the show relies more on “oh that’s a science thing so it’s funny” rather than the audience actually understanding the science to get the joke but what people tend to forget is that this shows target audience was mainly regular people that just wanted to unwind, shut off their brain for a while and just enjoy the show for what it was. That's not really the point though. Look at something like family guy you can attack it for relying on reference humor, but at least those are used in the sense that the audience is supposed to be in on said reference. BBT the audience is meant to feel superior for not getting the reference. This is a show for people that, don't understand pop culture and feel alienated by people that do.

Whats worse is that its not just regular "normies". I am yet to meet your stereotypical "jock" or someone "uneducated" that likes the show and just want to laugh at nerds, the same way we want to laugh at misfortune of people from The Office or IASIP. Its always reasonably smart people, educated and involved in nerd culture enough to understand the references. They are just not deep enough in the nerd culture to understand how shitty and shallow those jokes are. I am not trying to gatekeep or anything, its just that I noticed that people are usually not aware of the basic principle of this show(laughing at nerds being socially awkward and inept), and just think this is how nerd humor works. They are equivalent of your typical 20 something person that does yoga, once read self help book and took LSD two times and now she thinks its some kind of spiritual guru that says "Namaste" as a farewell, just being oblivious to the fact that its ignorant, you look like an idiot to everyone involved enough, and, in a sense, offensive.

+Craig X: "Big bang characters are less stereotypical than the IT crowd. " Maybe, but the IT crowd is not trying to be two things at once. By not taking itself seriously and throwing realism out the window (think of Richmond) it allows the viewers to accept the ridiculousness and caricaturishness of the characters' behaviours. TBBT, on the other hand, is trying to be heart-warming and give the characters a story-arc even though its main humour source are stereotypes and shallow jokes. You can call that a tonal inconsistency, existential confusion, or just lack of spark/talent in the writing department. As for the video, I agree that it pushes it a bit when trying to link the critique to philosophy (bit pretentious), but the creator is right in his judgement that this is a *bad* comedy.

I liked the first 2 seasons. After watching the whole series multiple times, I now know why. In the beginning, all of them had coloured personas. They had their own eccentricities but also had a human side that you can connect to. Sheldon was quirky but he was not rude, he would listen to leanard when he was made aware of the situation. In the later season, sheldon just straight up became an egoistical jerk. For leanard, he was smart but also wanted to embrace the other lifestyle. He would stand up to people. By the end, he was just a needy people pleaser. For raj, he had problems talking to girls, but had a very friendly and amicable persona. He would have no problems sleeping with girls, or making fun of haward. by the end, we was just reduced to a whinny homosexual momma’s boy. I can keep going on. They had a promising start but instead to building on the human characters, they just took all of their eccentricities and made those their whole character.

Your summary is the best I’ve seen here so far. Totally agree. Penny was kind but stupid at the beginning. 3 seasons in, she was just awful. Leonard would never fall for her if she was like that from the get go. And she would never show interest in them either. She would slam the door in their face the first time they came over. I’ve never watched the show until the end, but I’m doing it now. I’m on season 6 now. Think I’ve watched the up to the 10 first seasons at some point. Gonna see it, just to have done it. But I won’t do it again. Chuck Lorre is good. But not great. Same thing at Two and a half men. It was a great show, that was ruined. By him. If you want a good show, watch HIMYM.

I think the core problem is it's a show ABOUT nerds, not a show FOR or BY nerds. All the "nerds" of the show are just hollow stereotypes, used as a punchline. Lonely awkward nerds are lonely and awkward (insert laugh track here). Now, comare this to The IT Crowd - clearly created BY and FOR nerds. And it's freakin' hilarious! Why? Because they're not sereotypes, but relatable characters. They're laughing WITH us, not AT us. And that lets us laugh at ourselves.

No B Bardy, that is completely wrong. Every nerd I know socially awkward or not, are in high paying jobs, with a stable group of friends and colluges. You might as well say; "the point is a lot of feminist are shouting, man haters, that cut their hair short, grown armpit hair and paint their faces with menstrual blood. You are referencing "extremist" nerdism. Not "typical" nerdism. Go to any comic con, even the people in cosplay will be talking about their lives in "addition to" their fandom. You're completely right, those Sheldon cuts they use are not supposed to be funny just because they use a reference for the sake of using a reference, they are supposed to be funny because of Sheldon's total absence of social skills. So, he doesn't understand when or how it is appropiate to give "stick to the book" definitions or explain his behavior with a vocabulary that (he's supposed to know, because he's super smart) most of people are not going to understand. So his "social stupidity" becomes the joke.

As someone who didn’t get a single reference, and also someone who knows many Chinese people that enjoy this show, I think the reason for it’s popularity has something to do with laughing at stupid Americans. As fans of the show often are the same people who genuinely find Americans and Americans culture inferior. So they don’t need to get the reference, they just need to know it’s “unpopular”.(yes I know Star Wars is popular but not in China.)

I have only watched what my relatives would put on to be polite but i feel the show had 2 main appeals that kept the audience happy. 1 Nerd love: the show always has a love sub plot in the background that is usually done fairly well, kind of hard to mess one up in a sitcom but worth mentioning, many people are attracted to romantic comedies and relationship growth so they can ignore some of the weaker elements in writing. 2 anti intellectualism: the big punchline for all the episodes is "look at these brilliant men messing up these easy tasks". Most of the "nerds" basically have really bad lives and backstories and have crippling social anxiety with huge egos that ruin any connection with the outside world. its continuing the idea that being smart comes with drawbacks and that you the audience are in some ways superior for living a normal life and gaining skills they haven't.

My answer to the title question is simple: It's a show based around a single joke: over the top nerd stereotypes. If we're really harsh here, this show should count as discrimination of a subculture, with Penny as the only "normal" character, scoffing at the over the top antics of these weirdos. It's like if there was a sitcom centered around a group of east asian friends, and the entire show is just about racist stereotype jokes like them talking in an over the top accent, having buck teeth, eating rice and taking photos, and the role of Penny is played by the sole western person on the show who scoffs at their asian antics.

Howard is the one that is obsessed with girls. And lastly Leonard is actually normal, he is just a guy that is smart and looks like a nerd. If anyone actually acted like him and looked... Normal, then he could be one of us. Yes, they are overdone, but I feel like they just riff on Sheldon this whole show, when Howard is honestly my fav.

There is a lot wrong with this show, and you nailed some of it, like the scornful humor (although beat-on-your-friends is a common trope outside TBBT too) and the kitchen-sink approach to geekdom. But the references aren't always as brainless as you claim and the show does often have a lot of heart. It also has a lot of character growth, sometimes cringily uneven but sometimes profound. And even when we're laughing at exaggerated nerd cultures, it's still normalized so that we accept it and the characters that embody it.
@edgardeitz5746

Personally, I see the whole thing as being a balance between what @michaelf9664 says here, and what is said in the video. To improve the show (in an alternate universe), one might want to find anything that worked (the actual humanity to the series) and tweak the existing episodes (past a certain point) to better implement the aformentioned humanity.

Things like comics and science were in the show, but there was never a plot line where it couldn't have been replaced with some other thing. The show never explored the comics/vidya/cosplay/science/etc. in an insightfull or interesting way. It all comes back to the idea that nobody's laughing with the nerds, but at the nerds. Which would be fine if the writers knew enough about nerd culture to satirize it, but they don't have to to keep the show on air, so they won't.

I don’t agree with most of the points in this video. Let me go over some of them (sorry for my english in advance): - Reference jokes are not necesarily bad. It depends, as with most jokes, on timing, context, build up, etc. Also, they are not only for reference’s sake, well, not all of them. Some provide characterization (different characters make different references and in a different way), some are connected to one of the themes of the episode... and, yes, some are just quick throwaways, which is perfectly acceptable in a sitcom. - The science jokes work as the video describes only for people who don’t understand the science behind them, but I think the video underestimates the viewership a little. As an example, I get more than half of the science jokes and I’m not a scientist, just curious enough to watch some Neil D. Tyson videos and read some Dawkins books. - On the topic of levels of reality representation, the video explained how it ties to some philosopher’s thinking, but it failed to point out what exactly is wrong about what TBBT does in this respect. The show is about de mix and clash of pop an geek cultures. Of course there’s gonna be references of references of yet other references. - Another thing the video talks about is the representation of geeks and nerds as a caricature... Yes, again, it’s a comedy. It uses exageration. As does Futurama, as do The Simpsons, as do all other comedy shows I can remember, as do all stand up comedias I ever watched. But that aside, I am a geek and a nerd and I have mingled in geek and nerd circles, and I can tell you that most of the quirks of the characters have a solid base in reality. And it’s not demeening, I find parts of myself in many of the (exagerated) attitudes of the characters and it’s very funny. And, again, it’s a recourse that every comedian uses. - About the fact that some of the humor is at the expense of some charatert or other... well, yes. The video itself explains that that is one of the foundations of humour. It’s not the only kind, but it’s not bad, as long as it’s not harrassing or bullying someone in real life. Yet again, name one comedian that does not make fun of somebody in some way (making it about yourself is not an exception). - On the note that the authors write about nerds without knowing what nerds are like... that is just a poorly made argument. First, you don’t know that. Second, even if that’s the case, so what? Do you think a writer has to know the inner workings of the mind of a psychopath to be able to write a good crime story? Realism isn’t always the goal. But, in the case of TBBT, as I said previously, I identify myself and some people I know in many bits and pieces of the characters, so I don’t think the writers are as oblivious as the video suggests. Finally, I think that TBBT has indeed gone wrong, but not for the reasons the video put forward. I think it’s mainly because it has been stretched too thin. It should have been 3 or 4 seasons long. Well, I’m sorry to be so contrarian, I usually enjoy Wisecrack content very much. And the video is good, I just happen to disagree.

The 'joke' appears to be on wisecrack. Practically every clip they showed involved Sheldon, a "genius", who's clearly on the spectrum - most definitely Asperger's behaviour - not unlike Alan Partridge, who's series is funny because...? No one cares about the extreme detail and complexity of Sheldons character, that's the point. Why do Wise Crack think Sheldon is often pared with Penny - she is us, a typical member of the audience (minus her looks) - the audience can relate to the situational contrast. People on the spectrum usually miss social cues and what's funny, sad or shocking to the majority, that's why it's funny, the devil isn't in the detail. Being intelligent/gifted doesn't necessarily guarantee an understanding of how to write humour. Of course, I've a sneaky suspension Wise Crack already know this and produced this video as click bait knowing full well TBBT had not long come to an end - therefore algorithms are kicking off all over - they had to entice and capitalise on the low hanging fruit, right? Wise Cracks vids are laden with information and dialogue that the majority would likely never understand, so why spend time picking on the details when they could simply jump to a Layman answer, which they always do anyway, at the end? Runtime to please algorithms? Proof their team are collectively intelligent, or unnecessary over reaching, like Sheldon? There's plenty of reasons for TBBT's deserved success, and Wise Crack know exactly what those reasons are. WC are usually above this typical click bait tripe. Or, perhaps they're not and they merely don't understand comedy/humour. Either way WC have openly insulted some of their audience (wittingly or otherwise) and the cast and crew of an extremely successful show all for the pursuit of subs, views and likes. This WC film comes across as petty, shallow, green and greedy.

Good to see a comment here that has common sense. A lot of the points raised in this video are poor and hypocritical. And your write, the shows has gone wrong but not for what the video is about. It was only good for the first three seasons and then faltered. Have to disagree about the video being good though. It misrepresents a lot of the show and uses cherrypicked examples and moments from later bad seasons as it's "evidence". And the whole idea of it using science to "prove" BBT is bad is just ridiculous.

Interesting take. I remember when the show came out and being delighted with seeing characters who liked the same things I did, as I was mocked for liking comics until they became popular. Moreover, I adored Sheldon. He was incredibly intelligent, and it would be against his nature to dumb down anything for others, especially other PhD’s. He was pedantic, literal, and flawed. I was so relieved so see someone like myself who struggled with social nuance, which doesn’t make you smart alone. While I hated how entitled these guys were when it came to women (a lot has changed in the last ten years) and I hated it even more when the show became solely about relationships, a nerdy Friends. I guess in summary, Sheldon was a breakthrough character in his time, and for the first half of the show, he didn’t waver his character.

Did you know that unintelligent people are capable of getting degrees? She may have a degree in neuroscience, but she's also publicly stated wrong information about science with the kind of confidence that only comes from D-K victims. I used to work with a guy who had a PhD in history and was the leading expert in ancient Egypt at his college (it was a small but good college, so this is the equivalent of maybe being in the department at all of a larger university imo). One of my favorite things he used to say is that BS stood for bullshit, and PhD stood for Piled high and Deep. Anyway, my point is, post-secondary education is important, and more people should get one. Honestly, even if people don't get a career relevant to their degree afterward, they do have a better understanding of the world than the average person who hasn't gotten a degree... but no matter how far they go in that program, it doesn't mean they're smart. Trump has a degree from an ivy league school. So does Hillary. Whether you think he's the idiot, or whether you think she is, the fact remains: even high degrees from the best schools available can write an idiot's name on a piece of paper with their official seal on it.

He'd either start acting fking normal, or he'd be homeless on the streets because he'd be broke for acting like a fking twat. Literally nobody thinks that bullshit is funny in real life. It's fking annoying trying to work, dealing with people like him. Since the writers have never fking worked in the actual industry they're writing about, and neither have most people who watched the show, it never improves. In a few years there'll be another one for the group-think consumers to craft their behavior after, thinking that's how people legitimately act. Those people will keep getting FIRED and never figure out why. Then they'll become writers (or worse, critics) and the shit circle is never going to stop. The difference between insane and eccentric? Money. Go act that way when people don't have to put up with you and watch what happens. People with actual autism or wherever in the spectrum are fking easy to work with in comparison. They live by simple sets of rules and just want to get along with everyone.

I strongly disagree. The meaning of the show is about people with some amount of social awkwardness - dysfunctionality came together (because they actually needed to do) and through their friendship and support of one another, they come to grow and be better and lead normal lifes. And they need to critisize and point each others flaws in order to do it, in a funny but accepting way. It shows that if you support people that seem weird and a pain-in-the-ass, they can learn better social skills and grow out of it. It's very optimistic and de-stigmatizing. And it's how it works irl too. Most recent therapeutic approaches suggest this.

No, you kind of went off course here at the start... then got it toward the end. See, none of the jokes are about science or references really. If you understand the science/references this is what becomes irritating because you realize that there's no humor; the jokes only work if you *don't* understand what is being referenced (which gives away the intended demographic). But it can be even more irritating when you realize what the audience is actually meant to be laughing at: intelligence and a passion for "nerdy" things. The nerds are the butt of the joke. The implied intelligence of the four so-called nerds is always shown to be useless, extraneous, or cumbersome in some way -- having knowledge and interest in certain things sets them as outsiders who cannot be part of society, and their attempts to "fit in" therefore become laughable. Knowing that details behind what causes a road to be slippery is not shown as something useful or even interesting, but pointless and somehow stupid. And of course, the show doesn't just stop at making "nerds" a target if ridicule but manages to do so for other minority groups such as non-whites and women and homosexuals. By the way, if laughter is scorn, then what of absurdist comedy? Or puns?

The other thing that's bizarre about this show is besides there never being any substance to the scientific references, there's never any substance to their hobbies. I can't even count the times I have been called "Sheldon" as an insult for being who I am and what I love - being both social and natural sciences, history, philosophy, and, in general, nuanced conversations. That's why I like Wisecrack. If people can take a name of a main character of the show and just say it as an insult, and everybody understands that, you know there is a particular hatred of the show towards something or somebody. Plus there is this insane obsession with women and sex that sometimes dominates the show, or at least it did when I watched it. The message is clear, those caricatures are odd goofballs, intelligence doesn't make them socially relevant, and they need to get laid, but can't because they are socially awkward. I hate that show.

@celestinenox 6 лет назад
Lordy. Thing is, you're not supposed to find Sheldon relatable. The whole point of Sheldon is that he's not supposed to be relatable to the audience this show is really aiming at. That you find him relatable and something to laugh at in this show isn't an indication of how "real" your nerdness is or is not--I don't go around telling people what they are or aren't, considering there are many people who would tell me I'm not a real geek because I have boobs--but maybe an indication of how much respect you actually have for yourself and other nerds. Or maybe not. Who knows? All I know is that the writers of producers of this show don't respect us.
@benwasserman8223
@benwasserman8223 6 лет назад
celestinenox As someone who dealt with a similar inability to understand sarcasm and communicate through pop culture, I’d say Sheldon is very relatable in that department. He’s a complete “I know i have problems but don’t care what anyone else thinks” type who just happens to have a justified yet overflated ego. Oh and if this show disrespects nerds, why was Stephen Hawking such a big fan of it?
@joelijasonditoka771
@joelijasonditoka771 6 лет назад
They may be caricatures of what “normies” think nerds are like - but the exaggeration itself is humorous - and the use of overtly exaggerated caricatures is not unusual in comedy - Brooklyn 99 is not how a real precinct operates - or even some of the episodes from friends or seinfield etc etc... I don’t know if the producers are showing any intentional disrespect - I self-identify as a nerd... typical general knowledge and science geek; took pure science in high school then ended up deciding to read law in University... and the references and “smart-jokes” actual appeal to me... the punchlines require some thought and remind of British comedy more than your typical American offering because of it... although I suppose the cued audience laughter signpost the jokes... I still find them funny; more fool me I suppose...
@celestinenox
@celestinenox 6 лет назад
Yes, he's going to be relatable to some, but he's not *supposed* to be. That he's relatable to some people is a side effect of there being an infinite variety of traits and personalities in people. But he's the butt of the joke, which means so is anyone who can relate to him, and that's not cool. You'd have to ask Stephen Hawking. I'm sure his reasons are out there for anyone to find.

So, I didn't watch this video, but "what went wrong" is pretty simple: It's a bad network sitcom with a laughtrack. Seriously... a laughtrack... in the 2010s. @charleschemtob7263
@charleschemtob7263 6 лет назад
We can still shows with laugh tracks funny even though they haven't been common for a while. Seinfeld is still funny the IT Crowd is still funny, they both have a laugh track. Just because there are newer, more innovative comedies doesn't make the idea of a laugh track automatically not funny.
@BenWengerMan

@Charles Chemtob: Seinfeld gets a pass because it's in the 90s and is before everyone figured out laughtracks were a bad idea. And IT Crowd is a mostly bad show with 3 or 4 hilarious episodes. That show really gets way more praise than it deserves -- overall it's pretty average at best.

When this show first aired I was astonished that any show mirrored the real-life conversations happening non-stop in my home every day. At the time my two sons- teen and pre-teen, high-functioning autistic sons, with stellar IQ's, and their Asperger step-father who runs one of the largest engineering business in my state, literally had so much in common with the 4 fictional male characters (minus the misogyny). Obviously there was no laugh track. This show was a very accurate depiction of my home life, from attending Comic Con, actually talking about dark matter, string theory, to arguing about what superpowers would be the best. I finally had a reference point if anyone outside my home wanted to know what it was like to be a bug on the wall in my home. I didn't really watch Big Bang Theory much, especially past the first couple seasons, but for me, it was interesting to know I wasn't alone. No surprise, my sons have ended up going into different fields of engineering. But the TV show did put Cal Poly on the radar when college admissions time came around.

Every single main character is just so cruel and vindictive and hateful to the people around them, even their supposed best friends, mocking and belittling each other constantly while the object of scorn is clearly not laughing along with the joke (like normal friends in real life do when making fun of each other). Buuuut People like it for the same reason they like any other canned, studio audience, yuck-fest sitcom: they like the rapport of the cast. Yeah the jokes are corny and the nerd culture "shallow"; but the characters work and everything else is superficial set dressing (like any other sitcom) Sheldon works because he doesn't understand social cues. The Guy from Roseanne works because he's perpetually frustrated by how obtuse his friends are. The Indian dude works because he's a clueless narcissist. The bowl haircut dude because he's even more clueless and hyper competitive. Sheldon's girlfriend works because she's humorless. Kaley Cuoco works because she's the odd one out. And the interplay of such keeps things relatively interesting.
