After testing the XR650L & DR650 a few days ago, I decided to hop on my 2016 Husqvarna 701 Enduro to see how it stacks up against it's legendary predecessors.

The last 3 minutes of this video gave me 80% of the info I was looking for. I'm interested in rideability, reliability, and ease of maintenance. If you could put those 3 things together in a video that was less than 5 minutes, you would have a winning formula for your channel. Most people either don't have the time to slog through a half hour video or the attention span. It's good you have the gift of gab. That's critical on any YT channel but condensing your reviews will only help you in the long run. I hope this bit of constructive criticism is taken in the spirit it's given to help you grow your channel and connect with your viewers better.
@SwankyCatProductions
@SwankyCatProductions 4 месяца назад
That is definitely good advice and something I'd like to start doing for all my videos like this. Regular viewers often enjoy longer videos, but that's more for entertainment and just a little education here and there. For those who are new to the channel, or are just doing research, videos like this often get skipped over. Regardless of whether there's actual helpful information buried at the end. I could try fitting it into a 1 minute short, but perhaps a 5 minute video would be better?

I'm not sure why it's suggested that "newer" riders should start with lower seat height bikes, while more experienced riders gravitate to higher seat height. I've been riding for over 30 years and I always feel more comfortable riding a slightly lower seat height bike... and I'm over 6 foot. Just because you're more experienced doesn't mean you require higher seat heightage.

Service intervals on my 2023 701 is 6200 miles and most people don't put that many miles on a motorcycle in a year so I'm not sure where the high maintenance comments are coming from. I've owned KTM and Husqvarna motorcycles for the past 8 years without any reliability issues. The DR and XR are interesting video's to watch but I'm mainly here for the 701 video's. Thanks.

Sounds like YOU don’t put that many miles on a motorcycle in a year 6,200 is for oil change (which is insane) AND the valve check. The tenere 700 valve check is every 26,000 miles. Nice video. Sometimes there is an idea that riders will have some kind of linear progression from a small beginner bike like an XT250 and then move to larger more powerful bikes, the 650s, then the twins, the big expensive adventure bikes, the faster bikes, until we reach some pinnacle where we have the fastest, most powerful, most expensive bike on the market. Maybe it's peer pressure, maybe it's ego, maybe some folks are just meant to ride those big pricey bikes; somebody has to. The rest of us mere mortals just want to find something that fits and enjoy it.

Well done ! I was wondering about the 701 and I am glad you finally did a comparison with it... at twice the price as the dinos I don't see that much difference my self ! yes it has new features..... the fuel injection and I assume an extra gear in the transmition( not sure about that) but the reliability of the fuel injection would be a big drawing point for many I am sure but when it comes to playing around with the bikes in the dirt or fields they really look to be exactly the same.... the XR650L has to be timed just right to get the front wheel up and the 701 doesn't but they both can get the front wheel up just like the DR too so if the bike can accelerate hard enough to do that theirs not that much difference in them ! twice the Horsepower sounds like a big difference but in this case I don't think it is....this is very interesting as I've always went for the higher HP machines for playing in the dirt that is great fun ! but although you can peal out on every corner with the 701...you can do the same thing with the other 2 dino's.......personally i think my 40hp dino is just right ! thanks Ben !

Well.... I bought a plated 2002 XR650R...10 years ago, for $2700. It already had a lot of the mods and upgrades done to it. It rips and its super reliable. Easy to work on, and parts are readily available, and cheap. Still ride it...a lot! Yes...I have to kick start it. But I figure that the kick starting is a theft deterant. So, in my view, the 650L, is a great bike. But...why on earth would you buy a new one???? There are tons of them, that have been sitting in someones garage, for 10 or 15 years...mostly unridden!! Easy to pick a nice one up, for 2 to 3k! Do the suspension, intake, exhaust and comfort/personel mods, and still be considerably, under the cost of a new one. And...with the mods, unless you are a expert/pro level rider, is close enough to the Husky. Remember...it's 80 percent rider, and 20 percent bike. Work on your skills, and save a ton of money. People will respect you are ripping on an XR...but if you rip on a Husky, its expected and no one cares. Old guy wisdom. LMAO

That being said though, the R isn't something that the average dude is going to buy and then plate, so I'm not sure there'd be a huge audience interested in one. I purchased mine used with a couple hundred miles on it and the seat concepts seat, so it ended up being an awesome deal. The price is the biggie. The clones are amazing bikes, but they cost so much more. We don't get new XRs or DRs anymore, so in the big single range, it's really a KLR or one of the clones. Two very different styles. Unless you want something really exotic with a very small dealer network. My DR was a great bike after I sorted it to suit me, but oh myyy, that 690 - and straight out of the crate!😎

Moved from a 2008 KLR to a well accessorized used 2016 KTM 690 Enduro. Lost 80-ish lbs, gained 30+hp and a 6th gear. You can find used 690/701s in good condition for around $7,500~$8,500; putting the cost of a much better bike in reach.

The low speed low rpm chug of the DR/XR is available on a 690 with a simple sprocket change. The deep chug single cylinder sound DR/XR was traded on the 2019+ 690 by the two counter balancers. It’s a good trade if when you ride longer faster stretches of road. Numb hands feet and butt is greatly reduced. You can still get a really sweet not ear damaging thumper sound with a good aftermarket pipe for it. Such as Wings or Arrow.

Question: Which bike has better performance between the Husky 701 and the T7? The best engine mods I've done to my KLR650 C model, is a big bore 692cc kit, and the MCP carb kit - I didn't notice any difference with the KLX needle, but the MCP kit definitely made a difference, especially on top end. Those mods in conjunction with the modified air box and free'er flowing exhaust makes the KLR perform like it was meant to. I've also upgraded the suspension with a progressive rear shock and progressive front springs. Alas, even after all those mods I'd love to have a Husky 701.

The T7 is definitely impressive, but unless my dad was really holding back, the much lighter 701 pulled out ahead with comical ease. All of these bikes run much better with some fueling and exhaust therapy. Of the Japanese bikes the Honda is my choice as it's has far more potential in it's suspension due to it being fully adjustable and cartridge vs. the Suzuki's damper rod forks. To be fair, I like the Suzuki's engine better than the Honda, and it's forks can be improved with cartridge "emulators". The 690 platform is another animal entirely and truly becomes mental when tuned with an O2 delete, mapped Power Commander and the free breathing can of choice, which was the Yoshimura for my 701. The tuned engine is almost too fast for it's dual sport wrapper now. I geared mine up to be the same as the SMC-R at 16/45 which give it really easy cruising on the highway, but also give it nice "legs" and makes it more controllable in the lower gears.

I got my 2023 701 in early 2024 for 10300, new from the dealer. The 2016 would not have the full 74HP, that didn't come until the later models. A lot of those things you talk about not liking have been fixed since 2016. The crank is now double balanced, which means there really isn't much in the ways of vibrations anymore. Compared to the XR, my 701 feels just so much more capable and worth the extra expense. The only complaint I have with the bike is that there aren't many aftermarket fuel tank options out there, and the ones that exist are pricey ($500 USD for 1,5 gals). I've put about 2k miles on it and really don't get the reliability issues people talk about. I had a 2016 with 18k miles on it and I did have to replace the clutch slave cylinder. Other than that, it was oil changes, tires, chain, basic maintenance and the thing would not quit. I fully believe people just like to hate on bikes that aren't Japanese.

Does this bike have the same issues with the cams wearing out? Does anyone know? I would assume so but perhaps not. I looked at these bikes, but I have a CR250R so if I want a dirt bike I ride that, so I wanted to go more road comfort oriented and went with the KLR, which yes is a dog until you "uncork" it. And even then I can't quite understand why there isn't a really good Fuel Map modification for the KLR, blows my mind with how many they have sold that all we have to choose from is the dynajet at 500 and the JD at 280 and neither seem like a great option at this point. Maybe I am wrong. Please someone correct me if I am wrong. the only problem with the Husqvarna or the KTM 690 besides the price, the main thing is reliability, if you are not a rich guy you will invest a ton of money on a bike that is not so reliable to say the least, for sure it is my favorite bike but reliability keeps me from buying it. the second thing that keeps me from buying it is the availability from the dealers to have a test ride to really know what you are buying.

The 701 is fairly reliable. The platform has been around for a while and the engine has been pretty well refined. There's a couple minor things that need fixed. Pre-2021 models have clutch slave failures. And the sidestand sensor likes to wiggle loose. Personally I'd also do the subframe reinforcement before riding offroad with luggage. Once those things are taken care of they're pretty damn good.
