In this episode of the Big Build I am fitting the new Posi joist floor, this is my preferred way of creating a brilliant structural floor, no messing around with wet bent timbers here!! these are super straight, fairly light, super strong and can do some great spans effectively, there is a great deal of footage so I will split this part of the build into a few episodes

Good to see some strongback bridging members being fitted. A lot of complaints about flexing and squeaking Posijoist floors turned out to be due to site workers forgetting/not being bothered to fit them when I was designing timberframe. Certainly I preferred this system to I-joists which always seemed to involve a lot of extra accessories from the manufacturer at further cost.

Top tip Robin. Whenever I used to install plasterboard and had access from the space above, I always used some plasterboard offcuts and Gripfilled( along the length obv) strips over the joints from above as well as scrimming from below. You never get any future joint cracks...well I haven't in all the plastering I've done on my own properties over the years.

Kids at school etc. We were in an Edwardian terrace before and wanted a house with a decent garden, off-street parking etc. Finding something like that around the bit of London I live in is nigh on impossible. But we found one and thanks to planning rules which said we couldn't extend the 1960s bungalow, we had to knock it down and replace it. Mad, isn't it?

So I’m in acoustics and find the only issue with the engineered joists is they creek really annoyingly over time as you walk over them. Don’t know if you have found that? It’s like a rapid pinging sound per step and return tension. This series is simply stunning Robin! Thank you!
@ukconstruction
@ukconstruction 2 года назад
I have never experienced any issues with noise from these joists. The first time I used them was in 2003 and I lived in that house for 12 years and they where super quiet and solid, I have 288m2 of joist at my current place and they are super silent too, it depends on the correct installation, It may be that there is something touching the metal web like a pipe and this may cause the noise, seen that before!! Thanks for watching!!
@johndavenport7281
@johndavenport7281 2 года назад
My experience of Posi joists creaking has been of strongback bridging not being fitted on site so that bracing only acts across the floor decking. A rarer cause is if the camber hasn't been applied correctly in their manufacture so that they don't "crown" and set the whole joist into correct tension, the resulting slackness allows the metal webs to move and then creak. Contact with pipework ducting etc may occur but I'd expect it to be more localised.
@richarda5983
@richarda5983 2 года назад
A lot of creaking actually comes from the nailing of chipboard. I remember the old Trussjoist I-Joist, they advertised as silent floor but had no end of squeaking issues. That was a result of nails being used. Swap to screws and it solves a lot of the issues.

Will be lucky to break even on this latest house if I ever get any materials. Shut site start of July. Australia has returned to being a prison colony. Saw a cartoon the other day entitled what the World's biggest prison looks like from space. It was a satellite picture of Australia. Spot on. Hi Robin, can you use joist hangers with posi joists and can you join them together?, thanks.
@ukconstruction
@ukconstruction 2 года назад
Hi Habib, yes you can join the joists at right angles etc with the correct hangers or timber to timber connectors, generally when you order these joists the manufacturer will put together all the joists, trimmers, trimming joists and trimmed joists and their respective metalwork in the design, they are fabulous!! Slightly more expensive than regular solid joists but the saving in labour fitting these far out weighs the cost, hope that helps mate

How thick do you want the walls? The house is detached and in middle of nowhere so no problem with farts. But yes I have lived in attached houses where you could hear the neighbours having sex etc but these were built many years before stereos tvs and inconsiderate neighbours existed
@ToraKwai
@ToraKwai 2 года назад
Not quite sure what you mean by paper houses, they're all brick built, external walls are with a 9" solid or 300mm cavity, 9" being the old style. Granted some of the old terraces only had a 4" dividing wall but there are plenty of ways to remedy that these days with acoustic matting and/or acoustic plaster board. Goes a long way to stop noise transference. Also keep in mind that there is a lot of history in the UK so what might be the case for a certain type of house it will never be a rule for the vast majority of the housing here

@MrVodkaJohn 2 года назад
Only standard that seems to differ is where the roof and the walls tie together. Though without hurricanes and F5 tornadoes. It's probably not needed. Though if a Tornado rolls through I'd rather replace a roof than the whole building. So there used to be a thought process and design behind leaving a weaker connection at the top plate.
