I am an ordained priest of Dudeism. That doesn’t say much, but this film was and still is one of my absolute favorites. Really ties the room together while it’s playing.
The Dude is not a loser.. he elevated above the BS we call social norms. Even the script writer did not envision the absolute simple balance of Dude ism
He then replaced the piss rug with a stolen rug. "The old man told me to take any rug in the house" He later tells the police "My rug was also stolen" directly followed by Maude leaving a message on his machine admitting she stole it back.
A few multi-watch notes: he takes his “abides” line from Bush, on the TV. At most times in the movie, the Dude is not abiding. In fact he is mostly pissed off at something.
Really enjoyed this video. Very on point. Thanks for the good work. I hope you're going to do video's on some of the films I love the best and so I'll just list them here in a random order: Mr.Verdoux, Trainspotting, Harold & Maude, Castaway, The ruling class, Ed Wood, In the mood for love, Blue velvet, Rango.
Loved the video-- I just watched a video about the Stoic Epictetus, seems to have a very similar mindset to the Dude's. Being a loser is alright, as long as you're cool with yourself. Fck it. Go bowling.
Same when I hear cult classic. I think of this movie and Sam Raimi Spiderman 2. To me its the best super hero movie ever made while movie is the best cult movie of all time. In my opinion. People have there different views on what is a cult movie and a classic film that still holds up like The MASK with Jim Carrey.
Disagreed about walter being jewish, though hes not shomer kashrut he is shomer shabbos, he did convert. He is jewish even after the divorce. He stood at mt sinai as far as im concerned.
Oh boy, these spiritual live-in-the-present-and-all-emotional-problems-are-solved gurus (like this pseudo-mystical flower Eckhart Tolle or the quoted Alan Watts) chap my ass, doing so is almost some kind of neglect. It's the proper use of all our cognitive abilities that provide a healthy lifestyle, just living in the present will bring you pretty quick in much trouble and only thinking about the past and future will prevent enjoying the good things you have now. All modes have their time and function. You learn from past mistakes, so you don't repeat them, without reflecting behavior this is not possible, and you prepare for the future, so you don't get "fucked in the ass" later. And then there are moments when you can take your time focusing on something joyfull in the present. Thinking in just one or two of these modes is not a good idea imho and I don't care if some self-proclaimed mystical guru or philosopher tells me, that this is the right thing to do, I don't agree. I can think for myself, I don't need weird gurus filling my brain with their spiritual bs. 🙅♂🙄
Personnaly, Allan Watts helped me learn to be more in the present and calm down my anxiety. He s not a guru for me, but he knew how to vulgarise important views of the world. The lack of equilibrium is always a problem. I read once that you have 3 ways to learn : 1) with a teacher ( the easiest) 2) with cognitive deduction 3) by mistakes ( the hardest ). I tend to combine the 3 ways.
