The big mistake when making your art bigger

Today I am talking about how to scale up your art. What is the best way to go from making small to large art? I did it completely wrong, which caused me a lot of wasted time and money making mediocre paintings. So today, I want to share the one thing I didn't know about scaling my art bigger.
It turns out simply getting a bigger canvas is just the tip of the iceberg.
So that was my mistake that I finally figured out. Making large-scale art is hard. I still find it challenging but so rewarding when it works out.
What has been your experience in scaling up your art?
Leave a comment below, and let's crowdsource some ideas!
I hope your studio time today is a blast.

Lol I’m ignoring your advice and have a few 24” squares going now- grateful for this ‘aha’ about scaling tools and even your gestures as I get bigger.

Oh I needed to hear this! I'm so rushing for the big formats because they scare/excite me in an awesome way, but there is still time for me to practise on the smaller ones with no regrets. Thank you Nick 💚

I use huge huge kitchen bowls as a template for perfect circles on my paintings. Yes, large paintings require large tools. I'm now thinking of using wall painting rollers on my paintings. 4 inch brushes are not big enough for me. I've painted some 5 foot x 5 foot canvases and they were hard to paint without the right sized equipment. It's very easy to paint small but it's hard to go from small to big. Best to start now before you get too comfortable with those tiny canvases and tiny brushes.

Sir, all the canvases I have are ones donated, I’ve painted on all of them except the 5 ft and now, that’s what I’ve gotta paint. While I’d love to scale up with luxury. I use what I got.

Thank you for that’ it can be daunting to upsize the largest I can buy is 5ftx4ft. I’ve done three at this size but you need bigger brushes and plenty of paint! But may be best to graduate to larger sizes I do recall it being for me , going back down to smaller sized canvas and papers a bit difficult for a while must be marvellous to just paint big, all the time Thanks Nick

Recently I began scaling up, 36 x 36, for me that is the beginning. It takes a lot of energy so it is also a mindset change. I had to order plastic paint containers with lids, to mix bigger quantities. Physically I felt like I was putting myself in it more and it felt freeing and very satisfying. I also worked on the floor, my space is not that big. Thanks for the video, very timely for me.

Yes!! Bigger canvases will need bigger tools. Stick with it and I recommend not going back to small canvases.

Thanks - I’m still working small these days - biggest being about 16 x16. Another way to go bigger is to use say 9 16” x 16” braced boards in 3 rows. The other issue is the expense. A lot of artists don’t have the money it takes to go so big. So much paint. I had a wonderful art teacher long ago who painted with cans of house paint instead of artist paints which are so expensive. He was well known and was working on a large mural at the time. You can get huge cans of paint at Habitat for the Humanities and then get those small intensely strong color tints. I myself have done murals using these in the past. Of course there are those who have the cash to go all out so this will work for them.

.I think this is a great point. I have researched a lot on the net about using latex. Many artists from the 50's used house paint, Polluck did. Gary Komarin, a painter today, uses latex and tarps etc. and he is in major collections. I would like to know others opinions on this...mainly archival, and do we need to be concerned about this?

Thanks a million I at first found it hard to paint on 12 by 12 but now I love it because of all the reasons you out lined but when I return to larger ( not nearly as large as your Nick ) I will be using larger paint brushes Would you believe I used to use fairly small brushes No wonder paintings took so kind to finish Thanks for all your wonderful information Keeps me going !

If money is an issue and you're still learning, paint on paper and use cheap paint. It frees you up and takes the pressure off.
