WOW . . .cannot believe it is 4 years of all 'that' to deal with. SO glad you have such a great friend in your carpenter Lars. What a life difference. Shout out ESPECIALLY to Miss Christine . . . I do not know any female that would endure all such incl. no indoor bathroom....she is remarkable Kalle. Something for something. People used to say that sometimes it is easier to build a new house as to repair continuously an old one. But I know, the old one is grown to one's heart and it has own "personality". And there are always good friends to help, like your is. So enjoy it...

Im from Massachusetts and my dream is to move up to Maine. I know it seems like nothing cause im only 2 states down but trust, it's not. If I could leave everyone behind I would but I can't do that. I used to vacation in cherryfeild and south addison. Also was staying at a friend's apt in Bangor 2 min walk from Stephen Kings house so that was cool. I remember riding my quad all day in Cherryfeild/Jefferson and not riding the same path twice. What a blast I had everytime. also waking up to black bear, moose and deer in the yard was amazing. In my opinion your lucky. Enjoy my friend.

Thank you Lars. The rope type material used to insulate the small gap at the edge of the hallway looks like oakum. Oakum is a tarred fibre inserted in the gaps between planks on old wooden ships to keep out the water. Perhaps oakum with tar would be good around the outside of the building. The tar would stop the fox from messing with it.

Hi Kalle - the insulation material you're using is Flax tow, the rough stuff left over in the flax process. It used to be used in north Scotland to line gaps in boats' boarding. Lars is amazing, it's wonderful the community and connection you've built. Wishing you all a warm, insulated Advent 🌟

I think everyone watching agrees that its very kind of Lars to offer his skills to help you. Also, I feel that getting help from a skilled labourer in your home is priceless, not just financially but mentally. Yes you can watch 100 help videos on a subject but nothing equals the experience a tradesperson has in that field I'm good at trying things but I had to do a few finished plaster coats on a wall and I almost lost my mind, it took me 3hrs for it to look good, and it still needed one more coat. My friends husband is a plasterer and I didn't want to ask him for help, but eventually, I did, he came and did the job in less than 10 minutes and made it look so easy lol (I know it isn't )

I bought a 30 year old house to retire to, based mainly on the space it had and the nice location , with a big garden. I've had two soakings since moving in , the first was a burst valve in the loft ( part of the central heating system ) and two years later there was a leak in the hot water tank - also in the loft. I think all houses have their problems !

It is amazing to experience people like Lars, we all can find ourselves in need of a helping hand from time to time and he is an inspiration, to be mindful of how we might be able to reach out and support neighbours, strangers, whoever comes across our path, to share your blessings. You never know when a small gesture will make a huge difference in someone’s life. I read a book one time called “Life as a Day maker” (David Wagner) It changed how I saw the “routine” of my day to day and to consider the opportunities we have to brighten someone’s day or life. Old houses are something else. An author I read & follow on Twitter lived in an old historic house as well that she and her husband affectionately called the Disaster House. Like you it was always surprising them with new & exciting things things to be fixed. As far as I'm aware they replaced the plumbing, put it a new septic tank, waterproofed the basement, underpinned the foundations, replaced & insulated the roof & reshingled & insulated the walls. It was covered in ivy when they bought it and she swears it was the only thing stopping it from falling down. And caused half the damage they had to fix. PS: Thank you Lars

Dear Kalle, I know very well what it's like to look after such an old house and I know, how you feel. I live in a house from 1830. The construction here in Germany is called "Fachwerk" (half-timbered). It's a lot of work, especially if you want to be true to the old construction and repair damage in the sense of the old craftsmanship. But I can't imagine living in a new house. Those old houses...yes, they always have a leak somewhere, there's always something to do, but.... they have a kind of personality, they have a story - they have a soul. I live in a cold area in Canada. Next year I'm either building a cobb/mud house , using straw bails as insulation, or I'm putting the Cobb around my existing house. Then I'll experiment with an earth-rammed shed. This reduces heat loss and expense.

Our little house in the suburbs just went over 100 years (built in 1921). The previous owners did a great job of keeping it up, most of the work they had done was done well so when we moved in back in 1996 we only had to redo the front steps and the driveway. Last year we decided we had to really update things so we had new doors, windows, roof, siding, some floors refinished and new rugs (about the third time for those) and some wall/ceiling cracks and painting done. If you are a contractor in NJ and didn’t get a check from us last year I don’t know where you were, there was a constant parade here.

I’m living almost 100 year old house with same logwalls, we also isnulated more floors last year and made a big difference. Everything was dry and straight, hopefully it lasts next 100 years

Yes! Never a dull moment with an old house! I know I live in the Deep South, Louisiana USA, and I have 140 year old cottage! With all the southern charm, but NOthing is straight! Crooked as hell! But that’s the claim of an old home! Love them, and couldn’t see myself in any other home, but this 140 old home!❤
