The BIG reasons why João Cancelo said GOODBYE to Europe

João Cancelo was well on his way to being the best fullback in the world at one time, even making it into FIFA’s The Best XI World Team of the Year in 2022. However, shortly after, a falling out with Pep Guardiola saw him shipped off to Bayern Munich. He couldn’t stay there, and mistakes at FC Barcelona saw him fail to lock down a permanent move (major financial issues for the Catalan club also played a huge role). Now, at 30, João Cancelo has moved to Al Hilal in Saudi Arabia, just 18 months after he was considered a revolutionary fullback that was destined for the top.

His fall is neither weird nor rapid. People are just uninformed. When Cancelo joined City, Sam Lee wrote a very extensive article on Cancelo (including interviews with former coaches etc). He spoke about Cancelo's issues: very emotional and impulsive, prone to "exploding", moody, goes crazy when he doesn't play or even just doesn't play in his preferred position, completely loses any resemblance of confidence and drops one stinker after another after making one big mistake etc. Sam Lee literally talked about everything that happened in the 22/23 season...four years before it happened. Bc it happened before. Some people just have issues. And that's that.

He essentially self-destructed. I believe him and Foden had an argument about his dreadful mistake against Liverpool when Salah spun him on the halfway line and scored which led to us losing 1-0 and everything else proceeded from that. He then got taken out the team in favour of Ake and then threw his toys out the pram instead of acknowledging his mistake and trying to improve. His ego got the better of him.

Exactly I was a defender of him (The irony the man himself can't defend to save his life 😭) despite all those errors he keep making he is essentially another trent alexander arnold a wing back who excels in attack but doesn't know/understand when to fall back and defend. Everything can be forgivable but what isn't is falling out with the great pep, I can't defend a person who can't respect arguably the best manager in footballing history. That was last straw and I wanted him gone after that whole event surfaced and I am glad he is now gone permanently I generally wish every player best when they leave City did for ferran torres, julian alvarez even Calvin Phillips but not this guy.

As a Barça fan my main problem with Cancelo is his lack of tactical awareness.. and his lapses defensively. Last season he cost us in the UCL when he couldve been a lot more calm. I think one of the biggest problem with player like cancelo or even neymar is that their are just a limited number of teams in europe that can offer them a similar salary as they are earning when they reach peak, once they leave these clubs most of the other big european clubs don't want them as football is a fast moving game why pay high wages for a player who is most likely past their prime or just too expensive or just not required , this leaves these player with two options take huge paycuts to play for clubs just below the top or go to saudi and get even higer wages, which is not a difficult option for players who already have achieved most of the european trophies

the problem was this happened when cancelo was 28 still in his prime multiple world class teams had the chance to get him at a low price and he was offering to cut his wages damn near in half, the fact that bayern one of the best run club in the world didn’t even try to get him at a reduced price even a year after the loan says everything, his attitude is terrible and every club knows it, the biggest reason cancelo and pep fell out wasn’t minutes he was in the top 5 in city for minutes when he left, it wasn’t cause when pep rightly benched him do to his form he refused to accept his mistakes he literally went to the media after getting benched for 2 games!! despite the love pep had and all he did for him, cancelo still stabbed pep in the back and made lies in the media about why he wanted to go, great footballer but a shit personality.

It's not just the wages. Clubs refuse to let their assets leave unless a big transfer fee is paid. If the player is completely useless, let the player leave for no transfer fee and I expect a lot of these players would get a a contract where the player gets similar money if signing bonus and wages are added. one of the biggest reasons pep dropped him was his form defensively was terrible constantly walking back when he lost the ball and making stupid decisions while defending, the biggest one being diving into a slide tackle on salah when he was the last man on defense completely missing him leaving him acres of open space and he scored obviously, if he was making brain dead choices on defense against probably the greatest rw in premier league history imagine what he was doing against crystal palace, world class going forward but it was insane to see a professional defender who was terrible at defending even Marcelo made an effort to on to get back on defense when the team lost the ball and was good on a one on one level. Ake got thrown in at LB which wasn’t his strongest position and he excelled and allowed us to win the treble with his defensive attributes compared to cancelo. Great watch as always 🫡👊🏿. It's a shame he threw his toys out the pram. The City move had worked for him. But once he got on Pep's bad side it was a wrap coz he was then refusing to reduce his salary to take up another role across Europe so all roads led to getting the bag in Saudi/Qatar/MLS etc Back when he was at Valencia i figured he would have stayed there for a long time like Jose Gaya did but then he went galavanting across Europe eventually up until he had found a home at City.

This is a great piece of work, my only criticism would be that a lot is being put on the player. João is explosive in nature but so are a lot of people and especially his countryman Ron, but we also need to discuss how Pep's style is very straining on individuals and that's why he spends so much on defenders every year at City. Pep has a history of "backdooring" players, as Yaya Toure, Zlatan, Sterling and numerous others. I think he's just as emotional as the players and he throws silent tantrums when things don't go his way, both things can be true.

It really is a weird Rapid fall. They qualified for EL playoff and beat Austrian champion Sturm Graz in the league but also lost to weaker sides and are now even behind Austria Vienna in the table. As an Austria fan I was worried they could play for the title

As a City fan, that Salah blunder is where all this started. When I saw that live on TV, I said "it's enough he isn't made for City", too many defensive mistakes costs us important games. A strong defence wins you tournaments and 6months after his departure we won the treble, mind you we started thrashing big teams like it's nothing. It was the right call, Cancelo's offensive play was a joy to watch but his defensive mistakes were unforgivable. I remember so many times Rodri, Dias, etc had to take a yellow to stop the counter attack caused by his blunders. Rodri and Dias with yellow restricts their overall gameplay as they like to go physical .

i have this opinion that ricardo pereira was and would have been better then joao cancelo if he havent had those injuries, better defensively in tackles and slides also and in the attack he was super fast talented and great last pass decision, although, i really really like cancelo dont get me wrong he was top 3/5 at 2021/22 (im portuguese btw)

He's 30. His big breakout was his late 20s. He never was going to be a long term world class option, no matter his output. I dont think any club though yea, he will do this until he is 36 like a Modric and we can expect him to do this. No, at that age he was always going to be a stopgap 2-3 year solution for any big club. I dont see this as odd that he is going to Saudi, he is still valued highly, just not at the very top.

Others have said it, but his downfall was not surprising. Writing was on the wall since the winter transfer window of the 22/23 season. You can even say since the PSG UCL semi final in the 20/21 season when he was benched in favor zinchenko. His lack of defensive qualities as made him a liability. His temperament made it even easy for City to get rid of him. Pep even came out and said that he wants his defenders to defend, this was a main reason why city won the UCL in 2023 once cancelo left.
@dominikfraaanjuan

The FACT he was benched for Zinchenko who....you know, is terrible defensively(a lil bit better than Cancelo tho) probably was a sign that his defensive lapses make Pep think he's not suited for big match

The locker room is important for good coaches more than anything else. That's why the most talented players at the time, Etoo for controversial statements, and Ronaldinho for disciplinary issues, were kicked out of Barca when Pep was trying to prove himself as a coach. You just have to look at the player when he scores or assists, does he celebrates with the team, does he acknowledge others contribution?

Joao Cancelo fall is astounding considering he was one of the best fullbacks in the Premier League. The fallout with Guardiola was the straw that broke the camel's back and he was loaned out to Bayern Munich and Barcelona but couldn't find success to warrant a permanent move due to his defensive frailties and poor attitude. Cancelo was done at City and his move to Saudi Arabia is a tale of having poor attitude can lead to self destruction.
