The Big Shoot Day is Finally Here! | From Suit To Shoot | Episode 12

The journey to Scotland has been incredible and the big shoot day is finally here! In today's video, I finally get to experience my first proper driven shoot, and that means wearing my 5-piece bespoke shooting suit from Henry Poole for the first time! We explore the tradition of a proper English driven pheasant shoot at Craigsanquhar Estate and Birkhill Castle. Gamekeeper George Elliott guides us through this beautiful property as we experience the incredible British tradition.
The quality, craftsmanship, and tradition of every element of the traditional shoot has evolved over hundreds of years and is astounding. Everything has its purpose. This can be best seen in the traditional shooting suit made for me by Henry Poole. More than just an example of British craftsmanship at its best, the suit is a functional piece of sporting clothing.
The plus fours, the pleats, the pockets, even the tweed patterns themselves, were all specifically designed with performance in mind. They are as functional today as they were over a hundred years ago.
And the guns… well, they are simply works of art. But just like the suit from Henry Poole, the guns are meant to be used. The fact that the guns I used are over 50 years old, and could easily last another 100, is testament to the enduring craftsmanship of these incredible Purdey shotguns.
With the final drive of the day underway, I couldn’t help but appreciate the importance of the local gamekeepers. Their role is so much more than simply organizing the shoot day. As I learned in speaking with George Elliott, the real work of the gamekeeper is as a custodian of the local environment and wildlife population. From protecting their habitats to the fact that the vast majority of all the birds they raise ultimately return to the wild, their work is essential to maintaining the overall health and vibrancy of the local ecosystem AND is enjoyed by more than just those who shoot.
As the day came to a close, the magnitude of everything I experienced really began to come together. The incredible natural beauty of the Scottish countryside, the work of the Gamekeeper to raise a healthy bird population, and the traditions of the shoot itself… all of these elements come together such that the totality of the moment far exceeds any one element of the day.
And ultimately, all of this revolves around the important work of the gamekeeper in providing sustainability and balance to the ecosystem of the countryside.
In today's age of fast fashion and ‘cheaper is better,’ to me, the proper British shoot, run by master gamekeepers, with it rich customs, that puts quality, craftsmanship and tradition at the forefront, is something to be honored and maintained.
I had set out on a journey to discover if all of this was still relevant, and the answer was an overwhelming yes. Not only is it relevant, it is important.

As a 54-year-old Hispanic man living in Indianapolis, Indiana USA, your channel and this series has further opened my eyes to a world that I only looked from afar. It also brings memories of when I used to live in NYC and walking thru the garment district back in the 80's. I do not have the means to afford the kind of clothes and shoes you showcase but do appreciate the craftmanship and dedication of the tailors and shoemakers. I am looking forward to start dressing much better and adding more formality to my style. Thank you so much for this series, cannot wait for the next episode.

Hello Ramon! I just wanted to say, what a great mindset to have. I'm not in the position to buy bespoke myself either, but if i might give a hint: Find a good, cheap local tailor, and start getting your clothes altered. The cost is miniscule really, if you only do it a few times a year, and the improvement over ordinary off the shelf can be astonishing. You won't get to the level of master craftspeople making bespoke clothing, but you can get most of the way there compared to how most people look. A good tailor will also be able to give you personal tips on what fits and flatters you the most! Best of luckk in your new travels in clothes :D /Johan, from Sweden.

@@TzunSu Hi Johan, thank you so much for the advice. I see lot of people with name brand clothes and spending lots of money but the clothes does not fit correctly. Fit is king, the brand does not matter too much. I remember when I was a small child and my father will not take us to the mall or store without looking like where going to church. But as the time passed and we moved from Puerto Rico to NYC, he relaxed about the clothing and we were dressed like everyone around us (jean and sneakers); I wish this did not happen. Now all I see lots of men dressing like kids and some looking like clowns. Take care!

I would have loved to have been a fly on the wall to hear when this was pitched to the others in the video. “Ok guys, hear me out. I’m gonna get a custom made shooting suite made, get a shotgun and then we are going to Scotland to film a bird shoot. But, we won’t actually be shooting birds, just air. It’s my most genius idea yet!”

I feel a bit disappointed, I’m an English countryman through and through, I love what you had done in this series up and until now, I know from the cartridges used and the weather you were not shooting game, but clays, it’s not a terrible but you should be less murky on the subject, Scottish driven game is possibly the best in the world and as a man of taste and quality you shouldn’t muddy the line on that! I completely support the shooting of clays in a simulated fashion but I disagree with trying to pass it off as game, yes you avoid mentioning game in your videos but I believe people have made that assumption

Yeah, noticed that too. First I thought he just doesn't want to show any birds being shot but then I noticed that for such a caliber the guns seem to have quite a light recoil. Especially considering that kirby doesn't seem to be an extremely experienced shooter so I went to the comments to investigate. Still a nice series about craftsmanship but not about actual hunting

Smells fishy... Not a single beater, picker upper, dog or beater's wagon in sight... The field was empty apart from shooters and the keeper. The edittor must be bloody marvelous to be able to crop out picker uppers immediately after the drive ended! Also, elevenses after the first drive, unorthodox but okay... but an estate of this calibre and not a single glass of port or sausage roll? Give over. Not once did anyone stand on a numbered peg, or peg for that matter... More of a simulated game day with a 'flush' line each time. In fact, the scene at 21:30 has a stack of clays on the left of the cartidge box, never needed clays on a pheasant shoot personally!

I agree, as much as I enjoyed this series, something is off here. It's clearly, from the time of year alone, a sim day. Anyone who knows even the faintest about shooting can spot the hallmarks that this is not a game shoot. Use of lightweight cartridge loads, lack of spacing between the guns, total lack of dogs anywhere in sight or sound. It just seems weirdly misleading to not only not disclose that it's a sim day, but act as if it's a shoot with live game. If anything, it devalues clay and sim shooting and paints it as an inferior activity solely for those not "elite" enough to access the "real thing". Key elements of a game shoot are by result omitted from the video, which suggests they aren't important. What this misdirection does is reinforce bad etiquette like the notion that beaters should never be seen by guns, and that thanking the beaters, pickers up, and keepers for the day is optional. It isn't. Thanking everyone that made a shoot possible is a big part of the respect that preserves the heritage and tradition of the sport. Likewise, I don't agree with taking the pair of Purdeys on the shoot as an amateur. Not in a gatekeeping way but in the sense that it's actually quite unsporting to turn up with a gun you can't shoot and then miss everything. There's no shame in bringing a more beginner oriented gun, even an over and under, if it means you actually hit things. It just leaves a bitter taste.

I am embarrassed for Kirby suggesting that the reason he is missing is the use of a side by side rather than an over & under. I am also disappointed not to see any actual shooting of birds. I initially thought it was some kind of sensitivity thing to people watching who might be offended, but then I realised that there was not a single pheasant in any of the footage, no birds flying or falling in frame, none of the guns carrying birds at the end of drives, and no dogs or pickers up evident. He is also pegged at 9 when there only appears to be 6 guns, and the guns seem to be rather close on Drive 2. I wonder if any actual pheasant shooting took place.......

The RSPB liked this video. The only thing driven on this day was the Land-rovers. Nothing wrong with a simulated shoot & I think anyone had an invite or thinking of going on a true driven game shoot should go on a sim day shoot first, they are fun, the weather is often better, it can help those new to shooting understand what a driven shoot will be like and in a safe way, you will probably get alot more shots off, but it still can not compare, I would still take a bad day with bad weather, missing most shots, a foot of mud on a pair of leaking boots, on the worst peg, with a single shot non Ejector 410 poachers gun and be happy with a brace over dusting every clay on a sim day. Brilliant video showing the best kit, but be proud and open in what you do with out falling back on lies/ smoke and mirrors to make it look like something it is not

Very impressed with how relaxed and calm the shoot was and the gun handling by all. Most impressed by your host. A few clear simple instructions, any questions, enjoy your hunt.

Actually the gun handling in the video was beyond appalling. Kirby mounts the loaded gun horizontally straight into the slope in front of him which is beyond dangerous. He closes the loaded gun by raising the barrels which is a big no no. The guns aren’t sleeved at the end of the “drive”. To have someone who by his own admission has never shot “game” before standing on a peg on his own without a loader /guide is terrible. As an experienced game UK game shot, the whole shooting element was beyond fake. Wrong cartridges, guns way too close together, absolutely no sign or birds or dogs. They clearly fired a few clays over them for them to have a pop at for the cameras. He didn’t need to lie about “the birds”. Such a shame as the series was interesting until this point. It anyone wants to see what game shooting in the UK actually looks like search Dave Carrie shooting on RU-vid and there’s plenty to watch and learn. This video I’m afraid tells you literally nothing about our great sport. Shooting is very expensive £50 + per bird in the UK currently - maybe Kirby didn’t want to make the investment to produce a real shoot to end what had been quite a well produced series.
