There are may movies that attempt to explain the sub-prime market collapse, but few do it as well as The Big Short. It's humerus, enlightening, entertaining, artsy, and shocking. It really brings home the feel of the confusion of the time as well as explains what was happening without going heavy on the jargon. I like how this movie didn't even sugarcoat the truth - it was super candid showing how the banks deliberately made the housing market tip the fuck over. And Ryan Gosling is just a bloody genius in this role.
@victordonavon292
@victordonavon292 2 года назад
Not really. The movie ignores critical pieces of information. Critical pieces of information that changes the picture. So the movie is truthful but only to a point. And that myopic point skews the picture. Tell me exactly where the banks would have any incentive in a free market to screw around like that. They don't. But the government does. The government does in the name of "getting votes" and "staying in office" especially when by putting the screws to banks to make unsound loans. The fact that banks made convenient scapegoats was just icing on the cake. Do look into the "Community Reinvestment Act" of President Carter and President Clinton.

This scene actually points to 1 key fact that have been glossed over in the aftermath of blaming the Investment banks. When at 1:11 Gosling says "somewhere along the line these went from...to dog shit," that was ALL ON the retail commercial banks - not the investment banks. Investment banks don't make mortgage loans, retail commercial banks do. However, once they realized that they could on sell their mortgage loan (and the credit risks thereof) to Investment banks to package into MBS/CDOs they stopped doing any sort of credit checks or due diligence - which was their fiduciary duty - and just lent as much as they can to whomever they can to make more money. If anything, these small retail banks were even more greedy and negligent than wall street - but they have escaped the blame game that followed.

Seriously, do you have any idea how many lives were turned upside down? Every week I walked around my block in 2008 house prices were down another $10,000. On the walls of bedrooms were murals, clearly children's bedrooms. Children displaced. Dogs going to the pound. Two income parents not making enough to cover their payment and not knowing where to turn. Schools disrupted. Divorce. Couples choosing not to have children. Financial warfare perpetrated on citizens of the United States. Retirement plans dissolved. Pockets picked.

Alex Black TBF people being stupid with their money is practically a law of nature. It wouldn’t have collapsed the economy if banks hadn’t have fraudulently rated CDOs, encouraging even more stupidity and building an economy on the aforementioned stupidity. Besides that many of these loans were perfectly payable until the market crashed, causing a massive economic downturn affecting most every walk of life.

I remember being sad by 2005/6 when I saw the prices of homes in that area going for WELL more than I sold mine for thinking that I should have kept it as a rental unit. By 2008, I was obviously thinking I was a genius again. LOL!
