At the time of the switch Philadelphia had two NBC affiliates: KYW (channel 3) in Philadelphia proper and WMGM (channel 40) in Atlantic City. WMGM remained affiliated with NBC after that network assumed control of WCAU (channel 10), but lost its affiliation with NBC on 12/31/2014.

I know. They weren't BSing anyone here. It reminded me of a special from WMAR posted a while back regarding the big switch in Baltimore. The reason they gave for the switch: That ABC was looking for a station that "fit" best", completely ignoring the Scripps deal with ABC and the fact if ABC did care about a "fit", they would have stayed with WJZ. What a load of crap. It's a little late for praise, but KCNC still deserves kudos for this special.

What an awesome way to educate us on the switch than a KCNC Special. Originating with FOX's desire for a sports division, starting specifically with NFL football, the sequence of events ended in Philadelphia. NBC wanted to buy WCAU from CBS, thinking the peacock would keep KCNC, KUTV and the Channel 4 frequency in Miami. Instead, for tax reasons, CBS highly suggested NBC trade its properties for Channel 10 in Philly. This transaction also led to the alteration of WCIX to WFOR in Miami. As a result, KYW 3, a former NBC affiliate owned by Group W, assumed the position of CBS O&O in Philadelphia. Colorado television indeed changed forever after that mess with WCAU/KYW.

I grew up on the fringe of New York and Philly sports league footprints in Monroe Township, NJ. We were lucky that the Must Carry law at the time required Storer Cable and then later Comcast to carry both NYC and Philly sets of locals. Great for NFL season because we'd always get one extra game that a lot of cities would dream of having. Then WNBC complained that ad revenue was being lost so we had both locals for ABC, Fox and CBS, but not NBC. And then this switch happened and we got WCAU back.

This also affected Providence, where WPRI was bought by CBS in March 1995 while WLNE was still affiliated with CBS. The two stations swapped affiliations the day KCNC switched to CBS, causing WLNE to return to ABC. WPRI was forced to be sold when Westinghouse finalized its acquisition with CBS in November 1995 due to signal overlap with WBZ.

KPNX retained its affiliation due to a deal between Gannett and NBC at the time where WXIA was courted for the CBS affiliation to replace WAGA-TV (channel 5), which had been involved in the Fox-New World deal. The same great local news team you always loved comes with just about any local network affiliate switch, except if you lose that news team when the station switches to a WB affiliate in a small market (like Jacksonville, Florida, for example) after the original network affiliate gets a better deal with another local station nearby. What usually changes during these switches is the network programming and network logo/graphics in most cases with little to no changes in the local or syndicated programs that are carried on the local network schedule.

When WSJV 28 of South Bend, Indiana switched from ABC to FOX, ABC moved to WBND 58. The switch created a ripple effect that stretched to another Quincy Newspapers-owned TV station in another secondary Chicago Bears football market: WREX-TV 13, an ABC affiliate in Rockford, Illinois. The ABC affiliation moved to WTVO 17, a move made by ABC in retaliation for forcing WSJV of Southben to switch in South Bend from ABC to FOX, causing the ABC affiliation to defect to a low-power station on channel 58. WREX-TV 13 then made the switch to NBC.

This isn’t really an accurate description of what happened. In actuality fox got the nfl contract because cbs ceo Larry tisch was a cheapskate, as result of Fox getting the contract it decided to upgrade to VHF channels because outside of dc New York and LA Fox was on the uhf band and even in the 90s cable tv subscriptions weren’t as ubiquitous as today. As a result cbs was going to lose two of it’s strongest affiliates WJW in Cleveland, and WJBK in Detroit and be forced onto the UHF band on stations that spent their entire history as independent stations. So so cbs approached scripps Howard and offered to cut a deal to affiliate WEWS in Cleveland and WXYZ in Detroit with cbs however scripps used the cbs offer to renegotiate its deals with abc as a result of the deal scripps’ tv stations in Baltimore, Tampa and Phoenix became abc stations this in turn pissed off group W because abc was abandoning their strongest affiliate in WJZ for the shittiest WMAR so they cut a deal with cbs and eventually bought the network

All forced by Westinghouse's purchase of CBS in 1993, and Westinghouse's moving all their stations to CBS. Where Westinghouse owned a station, they had to sell stations that were primarily NBC affiliates. Of course, channel 4 in Denver was originally KOA-TV, under NBC ownership. KOA Radio 850 kept the calls when NBC scuttled its radio division in the mid-80's. Thus, KCNC.

This network affiliation switch was the result of an agreement between Westinghouse and CBS that was announced in the summer of 1994. It was not because Westinghouse purchased CBS. That came later. As they noted, CBS owned a station in Philadelphia which they needed to sell because they were affiliating with Westinghouse’s station there. CBS traded their station in Philadelphia to NBC for stations in Denver, Salt Lake City, and the two networks traded licenses and transmitters in Miami. When CBS and Westinghouse made their affiliation agreement in 1994, they also announced they would form a joint venture, with Westinghouse as majority owner, that would own the Westinghouse station in Philadelphia and would also try to purchase other television stations and make them CBS affiliates. The stations that CBS acquired from NBC and the CBS station in Miami would be turned over to this joint venture with Group W, which is why they say that the station would go from being owned by NBC to being owned by Group W-CBS (the joint venture’s official name was “Group W-CBS Television Station Partners”). Westinghouse agreed to buy CBS outright in August 1995, about a month before all the trades with NBC took place, but that deal didn’t close until November 1995.

@@joerouse7908 The minute the CBS/Westinghouse deal was approved, the combined company was in violation of FCC ownership rules in Philadelphia, owning both KYW and WCAU. One had to be divested. FCC gave them time to find a suitable licensee for one or the other. Westinghouse chose KYW and moved CBS from WCAU. NBC wanted a station in Philly and agreed to both the affiliation change and a pretty good financial package for WCAU.
@joerouse7908
@joerouse7908 2 года назад
@@rjmcallister1888 no, that’s not quite how it worked because this was not due to the merger. What happened was in 1994, Westinghouse agreed to affiliate its stations with CBS. As part of that agreement, CBS agreed to sell WCAU, and Westinghouse gave them part ownership of KYW through the joint venture I mentioned. It is true that FCC rules limited how many stations a company could own but the reason CBS sold WCAU was because they were going to affiliate with KYW. By the time Westinghouse actually bought CBS, WCAU had already been transferred to NBC as a result of the 1994 affiliation agreement and resulting sales/swaps, and the only station Westinghouse/CBS had in the market was KYW.

The 1995 Big Switch is the reason why I hate Denver. I mean NBC moved from 4 to 9, CBS moved from 7 to 4 and ABC moved from 9 to 7. This isn't fair. In Sacramento where I'm from ABC is on 10 and CBS is on 13 which is pretty great. But anyways let's try something special this time. Hmm… So I want KCNC to return being with NBC and KUSA to start being with CBS. This is because NBC is the best local TV network in the US. So KCNC… switch back to NBC. And KUSA… switch to CBS.
