In the digital TV age, you can have more channels, unlike in the analog age. In the digital age, you can get digital subchannels featuring different programs. Example: 2.1: ABC 2.2: The CW 2.3: Me TV

An affliation (ABC, NBC, CBS, FOX, etc.) works just like a franchise on stations that are not owned and operated by the network, which are otherwise owned by a media group (Nexstar, Tribune, Sinclair, Gray, Tegna, Scripps, etc.).

Makes me wonder... It is odd for an station to tell you what channel all of the shows will be on... but if NBC still owned channel 4 at the time, then NBC had more to gain from doing this than they had to loose. They wanted to make sure that everyone was informed were NBC was going to be before they lost their O&O

Here's another story involving "the big switch." This time, in 1988, when WBIR Channel 10 went from seeing the eye of CBS to seeing the peacock that came out of NBC. NBC was carried in Knoxville by WTVK Channel 26, and then in the fall of 1988, it went to CBS. But by then, it changed to WKXT Channel 8. Now, it's WVLT on Channel 8. #Knoxville #TheBigSwitch

ThisGuy Here How can that be considered “The Big Switch” in Knoxville when it was just the NBC-CBS switching stations there about 30 years ago.

@hkfreak By the switch they at least had a 5:30AM newscast...I can imagine with the morning show expansion that the 9AM news went out the window.

As a result of the Big Switch, WMAR in Baltimore became one of the few to be affiliated with ABC, NBC, & CBS.

In Boston, 1995 wasn't the first time of musical stations. In 1972, WHDH CBS-5 became WCVB ABC-5 and WNAC Ch. 7 went from ABC to CBS

I don't know how the saturday morning cartoons would have an impact because of the switch of the big three networks in Denver on channels 4, 7 and 9, respectively (expect for NBC because they had the TNBC block) back in September of '95.

Supposedly, the switch in Denver would have been even bigger, since Fox wanted to move it's affiliation to KWGN Channel 2, but couldn't make a deal with them.
