Speakers having fun technical performance at quiet levels is a highly underrated thing. People love to do reviews when they turn them the fug up but quiet listening is a whole other thing. Some speakers are boring AF when quiet when some are great. I think what you may have been struggling to articulate here is how I feel with all AMT/Ribbon based tweeters. They tend to be almost unnatural in timbre so that is feels like they are shouting at you. So even when you turn the tweets down and the bass is attenutated up you still have to turn the speaker up to hear the mids correctly. Then you get monster bass and on some tracks the tweets are way too harsh.
I'd like to point out that amt and ribbon are vastly different concepts, and experiences. I have true ribbon tweeters in my diy speakers. Horn loaded, and they were $70 each. They sound absolutely incredible in my 10" 2-ways. Lemme tell you, big 10" 2-way floor standers are an *experience* for watching content with full range left and rights, even on the shittiest of amps (don't @ me using a low end 7.1 receiver, I'm poor okay 🤣)
@@thierryfaquet7405 It's not so much the size, more just the design of the speaker that dictates what it's capable of honestly. Some small speakers can only ever be used far away, some large are near field kings. My homebrew 10" that are absolutely massive sound fantastic no matter how far you are from them. 3 feet away? Absolutely, shine on you beautiful dumb bitch sitting 3 feet from 10" 2 ways 🤣. 8 feet away? Fantastic. Farther away? Party on man.
they used to have a decent US site where you could buy products and had service/support as well as product specs and documents. They killed all of that during covid and their supply chain has been abysmal. I have a 2 year chat with them on the M5A where they promised it was coming back in stock. When it finally came in stock they jacked up the price as it was previously $1399.
Hi Zeos - Just like to say how much I appreciate the message to save your hearing. Spent earlier part of my life working in clubs. Wore earplugs as often as possible. Probably looked a massive dork. Ended up with some tinnitus but I'm going to be able to hear a reasonable amount later in life.....
Zeos, as a 61 year old man who has always loved music, I wholeheartedly agree with what you said about protecting your hearing. Mine is terrible because normies think its cool to blast music in your ears.
I use these as a home theater 2.1 setup. Fantastic for full range sound effects and loud volumes. I use an external DAC because the internal has volume increments thats unusable and they dont have subwoofer output or HDMI ARC.
I have a similar issue with the Swan D300 - even though I love em to death - they just need to be played loud, something in them is just like "SWAN ACTIVATE" when you turn them up. Which is why it's so infuriating that the volume increments on the remote are SO HUGE (That said, I'd still recommend those to absolutely anybody in a heartbeat, go digital in, crank the bass and treble knobs full tilt and be happy til the end of days)
I have the D300's as well and the volume steps are the so annoyingly huge, I literally prefer to use a dac with a volume knob to avoid the remote, I think that the balanced input does sound a little better, but its hard to tell sometimes. At least there's no real drop in quality from using either.
I have been using m300 mkii based on your recommendation and loves it. May I know if this is a good upgrade from m300 mkii or just stick with it? Appreciate all the reviews you're doing. Thank you so much!
I also have hivi m300 mkii and i combined it with z906 sub via spdif/toslink powered splitter and it sounds thunderous breathtaking when watching action movies!
Turn the volume on dac and speakers all the way up! Control volume only using computer volume do it! It takes them to the next level when using the digital input, definitely use coax over optical!
I used to own a Swan f2.2 system. Nothing has ever compared before or since. I had a baby and needed money so they were sold. I wondered what happened to swan because I never saw them blow up like they should have. You really need to try them out. I would love to hear what you think.
I notice the raising the volume 'issue' with my modded m1060c open, where I just want more and more of it. And eventually it's too loud and I haven't noticed and then I'm tired. The reason is that I really like them and want more of them. My focal elegias feel less exciting and moving than the M1060c and I never keep rasing the volume on those :o go figure
I enjoy most of my movie & music at lower volumes. Just loud enough to hear the specific sound signature of a particular speaker. I try to use quality amps and source of audio. I use my Yamaha dedicated amp for music and yes, my smsl amp. 2.1 SA300. With my Jamo 93>2 Music I use my JBL 530s. And a Fluance RTi 83. I need a lp pre amp.
I’m the same. Resisting the allure of the M5A is like avoiding the urge to buy a bigger/faster car or motorcycle. Theres nothing worse than spending a fortune, and cursing your choice because you got taken in by the crazy dyno figures. You put more miles on the vehicle thats easiest to live with.
Room correct and frequency response curve correct tge tannoy speakers and you'll get atleast an extra 20 percent performance. I have a set of tannoy that I have optimized
Hi Z 👋, I was wondering, What iphone app should I be using? the "HiVi Swans" one won't find the speakers even after selecting BT on the speaker and pairing with the phone. Got a pair of them for $900 in my country were stuff usually costs double the US price, only missing the toslink cable and the user manual, and a very small dent on the passive one. Amazing speakers, I agree they are underwhelming on low volume, but I didn't notice much difference between using the internal or a external DAC. They are big AF, my wife wasn't very happy about that 😂
I have them and use them for nearfield desktop. You should. I get FULL sound unlike smaller speakers. When I say FULL I mean that the sound comes from seemingly everywhere from the left and right as opposed to small desktop speakers. I also get full range sound as well. The only concern is that I may not be in it's sweet spot because there is so much speaker. It's tall 3-way design demands that you have to be a certain optimal distance away for perfect phase. Nevertheless, I love them for nearfield even though they might sound better for mid-far field.
I purchased the m500 and had them for maybe 2 weeks before I returned to Amazon. Beautiful speakers but the range and balance was shit imo. As much as I wanted to like them, I didnt , they were too loud and lacked bass and mids. Keep in mind I do have a svs 6000 and love bass but I don’t always want that much. So I’ve been using ediphier s3000pro and I fkn love them but I want a louder speaker that has the same nice range as those. This mess me to the m5a.. I need bass, as I listen to a lot of punchy rock, metal, Rap etc. would you recommend these m5a or is there another speaker that’s less expensive that’s had that thumping punchy ssss bass but not be too loud and great balance. I just run a arylic 50+pro and it does the job for me but I’d like to get a louder bassier set. Kanto tuk was one option but I’d prefer to buy one and be done. If m5a is your suggestion. Might u have a discount code or wanna sell yours ;). Hope to hear from ya soon. Cheers
Been feeding mine balanced from my topping DX7 pro in my home theater and they are wonderful. How would one go about updating the firmware if there is one available?
You can technically update the firmware by going to the ip address of the speaker. Once you're in, it's like a router menu, but it's all Chinese. You have to find the chinese word to click on and change it to "English", which you would only know it says "English" if you can read Chinese. Once you switch it to English, you can navigate to update the firmware, but I haven't seen any firmware update available. It either times out when searching for the update, or says there is no update available. Off the top of my head, I think the latest firmware is from 2017? I could be wrong, but I do remember it being old. Zeos, maybe you could convince them to update the firmware? PS, I have two pairs of M5As and absolutely love them (one is for sale if anyone is interested....perfect condition, barely used).....I always kept the bass knob all the way up and treble I found best just a little above 12 (flat where it clicks in)....maybe 1 to 1:30
Even if they (Swan) gave us a file to download, we could manually update it that way. It does give you the option to browse for a file and upload your own firmware file
Quick question. What are the speakers on the tripods/legs just to the outside of the M5a's? The 3-leg stand is very visually appealing. BTW - love your content. I'm always asking myself what can I spend vs what should I spend vs what will I be allowed to spend based on what Z is telling me to spend.
Drop has the rooth C&P earplugs pretty often. Fuck what anyone thinks these save my life at concerts + it often improves the sound quality. First bought them because I saw Slipknot love a few years ago and it was the most to painful thing that I had to leave. For most shows I'd recommend the -15 and for real loud scenarios -21. I doubt you'd want more than that. As -21 right next to a loud speaker has made it too quite. Lol
How would these compare to my Edifier S3000 pros? would these be a good upgrade? I'm worried they might be to much, my s3000s already shake the metal studs in the walls. Cant imagine what these would do. I am used to the bass now and while its good i just want it to play deeper. i cant get farther then about 9 feet away from them. the room I'm in is 19 x14 not including the open kitchen.
I have both, the 3k pros upstairs and the ma5s in my theater room. They are both great, if you are looking for a small footprint sounds bar murderer the 3k pros are worth every penny and play sweet music at every level. I’ve got my MA5s with two svs subs for the theater, they get loud enough to blow your eyelashes off! 😆 Daily driver, 3k all day.
Can you use an emotivo pt1 preamp with the Swan 5a speakers so I can keep my svs 3000 subs ? Or is there a different way to still use my subscription with these speakers.
? Why would he compare these to the T1 Encore? There is a massive size difference, cost difference, driver difference. Why not ask him to compare these to IEMs? Lol
Swan has been interesting but my issue is the lack of reviews, appearance, and the fact that each speaker doesn't have it's own amplification Have you looked at the Swan H6 and H7??
Zeos: Do not understand why you continue reviewing Swan speakers without mentioning the utter lack of tech-support/warranty in the United States. You and I discussed this via telegram chat in 2020. Hopefully something changed for the better in the last couple of years?
Ive had a few people I know get things replaced. Swan had a rough patch. So long as they exist on amazon replacements should be available, when they are on amazon.. FFF
@@sharur6359 hi bro, yeah Chu is good for neutral signature. But is there any recommendations for a v shaped fun iem in planar. I know u do not like planar, but just asking. Thanks for ur reply 🙂
