hey... i got 52lbs braid on my baitcaster and its still cutting into the spool to the point it gets noticeably sticky so i end up unreeling a bunch of line and putting it back on to remedy the situation periodically..... is there any way to completely eliminate this issue?
Makes sense, I'm still new to baitcasters but I started with 7lb braid and it wasn't too bad but noticed the line dig down easy and had a snap which lead to replacing the line. Just switched to 50lb braid and it doesn't dig down at all and super easy to pull out birds nest which it usually won't even knot up. Love it
Fantastic Video. Bait Casting especially for beginners DO NOT USE thin braded line. Even though your rod spec is 4-12lb. Use 20lb braid line or more and you don't have headache for the backlash (bird nest). It is very very frustrated when you often got the backlash. It becomes no fun in fishing.
Just purchased my first baitcaster rod and reel. Sure am glad I watched this. I have a spool of 20 lb braid but Im just gonna use it on my spinning reels and go with 30 on my baitcaster.
I usually go by the braided line diameter, I have noticed throughout the years of use that most baitcasting reels - excluding bfs reels - were not designed to handle anything less than 10lb monofilament. This is roughly the same diameter of 30 to 40 lb braided line depending on the line manufacturer.
G'day from Australia... I use a mixture of pflueger and Daiwa baitcaster reels and have them Spooled with 10lb and 15lb braids respectively....I have never had a problem with my braids behaving as described on my baitcast reels... Many other Bass Tournament anglers I know in Australia also use 10lb and 15lb braids on their baitcasters as well...I don't know what your doing to receive the results you are receiving but we certainly have no head aches with our equipment like you blokes do!!!
Ah....this is great advice. I currently fly fish and "spin" fish, but I'm interested in getting a good baitcasting reel to go with the sweet St. Croix rod that I received as a gift. My future baitcasting self thanks you for posting this video.
It’s a fun transition. I’m a fly fisherman, too, who recently started inshore saltwater fishing with a baitcaster after moving to the gulf coast for part of the year. I’m a giant St. Croix fan, too. I fish their fly rods and casting rods. I recommend visiting a good indie fishing shop that will let you sample cast different reels. I tried a bunch of nice reels and went with a Shimano Curado DC as my “daily driver.” Fantastic pairing with the St. Croix mojo rods!
Thank god for videos like this! I’ve been struggling with losing lures because my line would snap and my lure would go flying. Today I switched from mono to braided and it still did it. I’ll have to go up to 20 or 30 and see if that makes a difference. The only thing I could think of was maybe I was over powering my casts? But that sounds ridiculous. Or I thought it was something with the brakes. But I’ll definitely try a heavier test.
Same thing keeps happening to me after about 2-3 casts in my line abruptly snaps right off and lures go flying. First I thought it was a guide problem so I switched rods and same thing happened just snaps right off I mean I’m sending it pretty good but nothing the reel shouldn’t be able to handle. I see this was a long time ago I just started fishing bout 6 months ago
A tip of my own is to use 8 strand coated braids. I had trouble with 4 strand laying wrong on the spool and digging in also. I only have ever used 30 lb on my baitcaster and still had this problem. I have been using 8 strand coated J Braid and havent had any issues.
I’ve been using #10-15 braid on my inshore casting reels for years without a problem. Granted I’m doing mostly bucktailing and/or jigging and not actually casting (although I will do underhand flips). But evenb when I do get snagged I have not experienced the braid digging into the spool.
I noticed the sweet spot is 30lb braid for most medium to small baitcasters. Too little has issues and too big has issues. My baitcaster can support up to 65lb braid but when I use 50 or higher it birdnests like crazy and seems to spook/deter the fish they see it too easy. I haven't used below 30lb but heard the horror stories of low lb braid bird nesting and digging into the reel.
On using light braid in baitcasters just use a shallow spool bait caster like a 70 size or order one of the many aftermarket spools for Daiwa or shimano. Lots of Texas guys have switched to this especially throwing buggs lures.
Agreed, I use a scorpion BFS and silvermax with a chinese shallow spool with 10# braid throwing ned rigs. Just recently picked up a curado 70MGL for "heavier" stuff.
@@traitorhound curado 70 is next on my list. I have a custom ML castaway with spiral wrapped guides and the curado DC handles any of the baits on it just fine. The UL from old 18 is pairs with the curado dc fairly well but I think the curado 70 will go on that when I finally get one.
@@chris_2413 yea I had similar feelings on my light supressor before I broke it with the curado DC. I feel like those 150 sized DC reels are better for throwing 3/8+ total lure weights. It was awesome though for learning how use a casting reel
@@traitorhound I just ordered two Old 18 Ambush rods and waiting for them to ship. How exackly did you break your Light Surpressor with the Curado DC? I was thinking about getting a Curado DC to cast lighter lures. Thanks
Thank you I’ve lost maybe 70 dollars in lures in the last 3 days just from casting my braid would snap in the reel and I’d loose my lure so now I know I just need thicker line so I hope that fixes my problem
How does that happen? How heavy are the lures? 3 oz? Damn that's crazy. And $70? You must have a ton of lures and money because I would've stopped quick and looked for the problem. I go crazy if I lose my $5 lures, I walked into the water just to get my cheap $3 frog once 😂
THANK YOU!!!!!! It makes so much sense now. Have done most of my fishing with a spinner, generally 20-30lb braid, swapped to bait caster, no real issues. Swapped to 10lb braid today and couldn't cast to save my life. Thought I bought garbage line/was just in a rush to get out on the water and did a bad spool. As so as you said don't go lower than 20lb my brain went "THATS THE ISSUE DUMMY!"
Wow - thanks for this video, mate. Was just about to spool a new Revo Inshore with 5 kilo braid when this video was viewed; will be using 14 kilo instead, as of now. Thank you again. Cheers!
Yep, it happened to me with 10 lbs braid. My first experience with braided line was 60 lbs on a Shimano baitcaster that belonged to the Captain of the boat we chartered. I hooked into and landed a 29 lbs yellowtail on a bass rod. I was a fan after that.
I was searching for this exact info because I heard something about that before.... And I am exact position you described , fishing all my life, finally got my first baitcaster and wanted to check this info b4 I spool.... Good looking bro
i like to put enough leader to the point where it wont go into my reel while i cast, and having a mono/fluoro line as a leader is good because the fish wont see the line as much, if they see straight braid on the lure it will throw them off because theres nothing natural about what they see.
I think having good internal brakes (centrifugal or magnetic) is the key for using braid on a baitcaster. I agree with the 20# rule but have even had the same problems with 30# if internal brakes are not used properly
spinning reels spit out line in a wider arc, which is why they have larger diameter guides to contain the line. There is no spool resistance in a spinning reel when casting and the friction going through the rod guides is the main factor limiting casting distance.. so the smoothness/suppleness/thickness of the braid is the main factor in determining casting performance In a casting reel, the resistance of spinning the spool is a much larger factor in casting distance and the line is more or less released in a straight line from the reel (there is some friction from line coming off the spool going back and forth through the reel line guide). The type of braid you use has a much smaller effect on the cast, and there are huge problems with backlashing, unraveling dug in/tangled backlashes and spool break offs with any line below the diameter of 10lb mono/30# braid Basically you aren't getting any of the casting benefits of using light braid on spinning gear and you open up pandora's box since casting reels are designed for heavier line. I would never go below 30#, and 50# casts similar to 30#
@@hookedntravel they definitely understand the practical aspects of it and have experienced it on the water, I was just trying to explain it from an engineering perspective. I think it explains what people experience on the water pretty well
Thank you for your observations and wisdom on the subject. I fish the SW FL flats, mostly spinning with 10# braid. On bait caster, I use 20# mono. May go to braid on baitcaster, maybe 50#.
I use 15 lb braid on my Daiwa procaster and It kinda depends on how you spool it up because I don't have any problems with it and also how tight the drag is i often have it set a little lighter then my spinning reels BTW love vids
i have 2 bait casters, 1 has 15lb braided line and the other has 17lb braided line, both work just fine and haven’t had any problems with either of them over 2 years
35lb braid is the lightest I would go on a baitcaster and thats very rare. 35lb-45lb for swimjig/reaction baits and 50lb-65lb for jigs, flipping and frogs.
will 50lb braid on a baitcaster cause probllems in casting as opposed to 20lb braid? Having problems learning baitcaster. Watched all videos. I get it so I get no bird nests, but I can't cast longer than 15 or 20 yards. My spinning reel is also loaded with 50 lb test, even though both reels say 15lb mono limit. Is it me, or would things improve if I dropped down in line weight. Using RUNCL baitcaster (Merced) and spinning reel (Rushmore). Thank you. Trying not to get too frustrated has at least improved my success in clearing bird's nest when I get them.
Hello I just switched to braided fishing line I just spool up my spinning reel with 30lb braided fishing line and my bait caster reel with 30lb braided fishing line is that good or bad I will be fishing at my local fishing pier I hope you can answer my questions thank you very much I truly appreciate it

I have a tatula with a 7' ML zodias and it handles 15 lb braid beautifully. That being said, when using lighter line its imperative to have a reel with a good adjustable braking system and set it a little tighter than normal. The lighter the braid, the more squirrely it is on a baitcaster
Manufacturers in USA hide the diameter not like in Europe....It must be due to the measuring system. For example, here in Lithuania we buy 0.22 mm but in USA it would be 0.0086 inches. Too many zeros
@@jaymzpatterson2120 diameter has a lot to do with it. If for one second that it doesn't. You don't know squat. It's fact that the smaller diameter digs into itself easier
Hi have question, today i got lost 2 lures on my new baitcaster setup okuma komando ss 273 reel and savage gear mpp2 8.6 rod. My braid line 0.32 150m was snap x3 times today, i dont understand why it happens. Does it happens from backlashes? Or from something else, any suggestions?
I just started bait casting and I have 20lb braid on my bass setup. My snook fishing buddies use no less than 50lb braid on their saltwater bait caster setups, most of them 65lb
This comment section is awesome. I am newer to baitcasting and I bought 10lb braid thinking that was great. I have caught some GREAT bass with this setup but I sledgehammer today due to my line digging into my reel. Sad to watch $15 soar across the pond. Guess I need heavier line.
Is older generation like spectra lined better for baitcaster than say a Pe fibre? I am thinking loading my baitcasters wirh something like a power pro or sufix spectra ?

Nice tips, can u tell me what do u mean by 20Lb or more pound braided line use in baitcasting reel. How muh thicker diameter braided line would be good on baitcasting reel for snakehead fishing, plz respond? Right now I m using .34mm of 40Lb braided line should I go for.28m m braided line on baitcasting reel for better casting
I've used 20# on my baitcasters and had the problem with it digging into the spools. I just figured it was braided line in general. Never stopped to think it was the pound test of the line.
I look at the diameter not the pound capability . If the reel suggests 12 pound mono I find the diameter equivalent in the braided I'm looking at . Example , my Royalle 2 refers to 10 pound mono when suggesting how much to fill the spool and to get the same diameter in Hammer (brand) I went up to 30 pound braided whereas Power (brand) I'd use 20 pound braided .
If I use 20 pound braid on a baitcasters, will it affect my casting versus a 10 pound braid for small things like Panther Martin's or Mepps Aglia? I just got snagged in some weeds and had to break the line, but noticed after how much it had dug into the reel.
just start using baitcaster reel and rod .want to switch over to braided line but the reel says 14 pound mono .do you think it will be ok if use 30 pound braided line instead ????
I literally just did this and it was a huge mistake. 30lb is too thin of a diameter, 30 is = to 8 lb mono and my bait caster calls for 10lb mono at minimum. Every time I set the hook , the line digs all the way through the spool. I’m new to bait casting too and after digging out 50 or more birds nests today I decided it had to be the small line diameter. Don’t give up, I got a few beautiful casts that were further than I’d ever thrown and I know if I just go bigger most of my problems will go away.
@@natewatson1271 I switched over to 14 lb mono and it’s been smooth sailing. A heavier lure helps a lot too. When the lure is too light it stalls out mid air and causes a birds nest.
For both bait caster and spinner, should I run a leader? I have 30 pound braid on my bait caster as of no with no leader. Should I run leaders? I intend on getting 12 pound braid for my spinning reel also.

When spoiling braid on a baitcaster your supposed to cover the base of the spool with mono then or floro as a base for the braid to sit on and not slip on your spool and also keep it from digging into the spool
I’ve only ever used forty pound braid. I wonder what pound braid digs in the least without being too heavy. Is there too heavy? I suppose capacity and buoyancy is a factor. What does everyone think? 🤔
My 50lb line got snapped 3 times due caught in between spooled line! 😞 Lost three frogs due to snap! Do you suggest any thing so,that i dont get line snap again!

What if it's line capacity posted by the manufacture is 12# /125 yds. That's not much line if you do a 20# braided correct? What would you do in that situation?
I use 4 different fishing rods and all of them have baitcasting reels mainly because I find as long as you fine tune the breaks and spool tension nob just right on a baitcaster it is much easier to prevent birds nest than it is on a spinning reel heck I have my baitcasters so fine tuned I don't even have to use my thumb anymore. But personally I use 30 lb test braid of panfish, 40 lb test for trout, 65 lb test test for pike, and 80 lb test for catfish but keep in mind the braid I use is thinner than the standard diameters for braid so with the line I use a 30 lb test braid is equivalent in diameter to 8 lb test monofilament, 40 lb test braid is equilvalent to 10 lb test monofilament, 60 lb test braid is equilvalent to 15 lb test monofilament, and 80 lb test braid is equivalent to 20 lb test monofilament. And personally the reason I use heavier line than what is considered necessary for different species all comes down to personal preference for me I just tend to naturally prefer heavier line for every species of fish I fish for because I have always been plagued by bite offs when fishing so I tend to go heavier on what line I use.
My reel says: 12lb/110 yds. I have some 50lb braid says equivalent diameter of 12lb. mono - .34mm. It's Suffix 832/8 strand. What brand do you use? I want the best chance of success learning this thing! I think I want this for panfish.
Also prefer 4x hard type braids..i have tried many 12x smooth braids and they dig and they dig bad..Also 4x braids are cheaper.Power pro Z 4x , gosen hard type w4 great choices !
I wish I had watched this before I got my first baitcaster and spooled it up with 15lb braid.. Took it out for the first time today, and I think I put too much pressure when spooling it up.. The line dug into itself.. Might try some heavier stuff.
Your rite, Im having trouble with 20 lb braid on my baitcaster. Had it dig into the spook and snap off my frog. Had to cut off the whole spool. I couldn't figure out why everyone can use braid but me...now I know. I'd recommend at least 30 lb. Cuz 20 lb. still was unusable for me and I have a Shimano baitcaster.
Why is it that after I fucking spool my reel up with 20lbs that I just bought after unknowingly buying 8lbs line (which I returned) I see this video. Now I gotta return this line if possible and respool with 30lbs. After attaching a lure and hooking it to my pole I realized my line was digging into the spool which didn’t look right.
