I've been using Lightroom for roughly 4 years now so I already knew all that, but you did a great job explaining it in a very simple way!

I've never found a better instructor - online or off. I kind of want you to learn all the things I want to learn and then teach them because your combination of patient persona and detailed, intuitive clarity of instruction is something I've been searching for for a long long time. Thanks so much for all of the free stuff you've put out there, I'll definitely be buying some of your courses as soon as I buy my camera equipment.

This is hands dow the most helpful LR tutorial I've seen, every other video just starts with importing and just assumes you already understand the basic structure of lightroom, thanks!

THANK YOU SO MUCH! This aspect of Lightroom has confused me for years! Not the editing. Not the wonderful tips and tricks. The doggone mysterious structure of this program when it comes to files. YOU are my hero! (I have to wonder, why isn't this explained clearly by Adobe from the get-go?) As a "computer guy" since the early 80's, Lightroom file handling is like nothing I have ever experienced. You are the first I have seen with a clear, straight forward explanation. Thanks again.

I wish I came here first. I have seen countless videos trying to explain LR's file system and it has been making me crazy. Finally I found this after a few months and it makes so much sense now. Big thanks, subscribed

Awesome. I've used Lightroom for a few things but have mainly used Bridge, after hearing that was a better choice if I had a lot pre-existing images in folders. Now I'm not so sure after watching this terrific video. Looked at the Lightroom course and told myself "If it's under $150, I'm doing it!" --Looked at your price and my jaw dropped. Signed up, DONE. I expect to be thoroughly amazed.

Agreed. I abandoned LR. It seemed to make to many decisions on its own. I prefer using Bridge and Photoshop. Little bit more attention is required in terms file maintenance, but If I mess up I don't get frustrated with a program I don't fully understand (until now). Excellent video nonetheless!

patrick, i hope you've moved on from bridge and photoshop and with the great help of guys like phil, learned how much time LR can save you! I learned lightroom after deciding one photo at a time in photoshop was unrealistic years ago!!!

Well explained, but there is another side to this. Yes Lightroom is built around the catalogue system, but it doesn't have to be like that. I belong to a Lightroom help group, and every day there are people who are having trouble with catalogues. Mostly I would add by those using Macs. Although that may just be a coincidence. I've been using Lightroom for about four year's now and have never had a catalogue problem, why ?, because I don't use them. I import RAW files into LR, develop them and save as Jpegs. I know catalogues are automatically formed, but periodically they are deleted, I don't store RAW files, I make a yearly new directory of photos taken with subdirectories of where they were taken. I can of course save RAW files from a particular shoot as a catalogue to be saved alongside the Jpegs, but very rarely do that.

This, is a very good video. RU-vid is full of efforts from many people. Unfortunately, not all of that are good quality. I have two questions. 1. In case the original photos change location; like say, I tinker with the folder structures a bit and move the photos around within the same drive. What happens to their relationship with the LR Catalog database? 2. Can I "delete" photos from LR; delete from Storage altogether? Not just "remove" from the catalog. Can I do that?

Starting with the affirmation that "Lightroom will not put your photos anywhere during import" made me really uncomfortable. There are people out there that use the import functionality to transfer pictures from the camera/camera card to the computer disk. Those have to choose where Lightroom will put the files.

I just build a new computer and decided to use an SSD drive for my programs and operating system. I also added a regular hard drive. Its a 1TB and The SSD is 500 GB. I have Photoshop cs5 but I haven't installed Lightroom because I'm not sure if it stores the small copies on my sad drive. I can't afford to fill that small drive up. Can you answer this for me? I want to work on some photos in lightroom and then export them to an external drive. But I don't want Lightroom to store a lot of stuff on the SSD. I watched your video and better understand how Lightroom works But I am still a little bit confused about the part of my work Lightroom keeps in its mind. Will this take up room on the SSD?

True - except that you actually have to be very concious in telling Lightroom not to move your photos around, because when you first install the program it has a lot of STUPID ideas about totally rearranging the placement of your photos. If you follow Lightroom's suggestions during the installation, you will definitely be sorry you did.
