I moved away from Adobe to Affinity Photo due to their subscription model. To be honest, I could now easily afford Adobe but Affinity does everything I need and does some things better than Adobe for a very reasonable one off cost. I think I paid about £30 (~$41) four years ago and have had updates with improvements since then for free. The UI is so similar to Adobe there is very little relearning to do so it's easy to switch too.

Yeah but what Adobes software has and no other image editing software has, is fluid, intuitive and easy to work with user interface. Working in PS and LRC is the easiest, most fluid and most intuitive user experience ever. Programs like Capture One, Affinity, Skylum Luminar or any others, are just terrible to work in/with. The UI is much more important than the subscription fee amount - at least to me it is. I am willing to pay $1000 more if I have to, just to have a fluid, easy to work with and intuitive UI to edit my shoots in.
@jameschilton3556
@jameschilton3556 2 года назад
@@nogerboher5266 Affinity Photo is far easier to use! I used Photoshop for years, then Lightroom and Photoshop. The Affinity UI is so similar it took no effort to change and there are certain features of Affinity which are better than Adobe. Cost is irrelevant to me as well so it's a double win - better software and no rent.

I have no intention of paying for cloud storage for my photos. Sorry. I have a high quality NAS system in my home, an extra backup in a fireproof, flood proof lockbox, and a third copy at a family member's home (also in a fireproof, flood proof lock box). Yes, if something extremely unlikely happens, I might lose the more recent photos that are just on my hard drive and NAS, but honestly that's not enough to make me pay a company for the rest of my life. If a shoot is really super important to me, like a major life event, I'll make sure it's fully backed up in all three places immediately. No system is foolproof, but this is more than good enough for me. (I'm also still using an old version of Lightroom so I don't have to pay a subscription. Though with all the new features, I'll probably cave on that at some point since it would certainly save me time.)

Cheapest way to back up your pictures / video's is to burn them to a Verbatim M DISC BDXL 100GB 6X, i do this when i go to bed and write one disk each night, it takes about 6 to 8 hours for it to write the data to a 100 GB disk, at 6X.. but it's said that the disk and the data on it will last about 1,000 years with out worry for bit rot, so you probably won't live long enough to experience losing your data lol.. i have Currently 20 of these disks stored with all my stuff and kept in a safety deposit box, very simple and very easy.. and cheap..

I’d still be using LR perpetual if it would support the raw files on my new camera. Was using LR since version 2 and the workflow was so ingrained in me. I moved to Capture One about 1.5 years ago and am still not as fluent as I used to be with LR, but I’m 90% there. The subscription model was such a turn off for me that I considered shooting jpg only, and just using Photo Mechanic to rate and organize my photos. I’ve been doing photography for 15 years now and as time goes on I edit my photos less and less, so my eventual goal is to shoot jpg and not edit anyways. :)

Like many others I won't use photoshop etc due to the subscription model. Here in the UK it's £20 a month! ($27.11). I just won't do it on principle. I would never own the software that I'm paying for, and would have actually paid for the product many times over after a while. I could buy a lot of hard drives to back up my files for the price of a few years worth of subscription (£3253 over 10 years, $4409).

I have no real need for Photoshop, but I do like using Lightroom as that covers most of my photo editing needs and I mostly want the database part of the product. IMHO, it all boils down to $$. Before the cloud, Photoshop cost $700, give or take a couple hundred. So "average Joe" thinks - "$700! Yikes! I can't afford that!" Or, "I'll splurge, but it'll be a one-time thing. I won't pay for upgrades." Adobe ends up losing $$ b/c they have more supply than demand. Adobe thinks, "If Joe won't pay for upgrades, we're sunk." So Adobe uses the tried and true "take away" philosophy. They discontinue a product with which you've formed an emotional and familiar bond. At the same time, they entice you with a "new, improved" product that's budget-friendly, has unlimited updates, PLUS cloud storage! "What a deal!" you think. Until you start calculating. Usually, by then, the stand-alone versions have mysteriously vanished off the shelves, and you're forced to use the new system. Hope this makes sense [think Microsoft Office Suite vs. 365; same philosophy]

I'll just stick to doing everything in Photoshop since I've been using it since version CS5. I edit all of my RAW files there and by all of the videos I've seen, I don't see an advantage to spending time to learn a new software (to me) that does the same thing. I was in a photo club in the past and they always told me that I cannot do what I'm doing in Photoshop. I have to use Lightroom (classic) until I showed them what I was doing in Photoshop. Then they quit telling me that I MUST start using Lightroom (classic). Nice informative video though for those wondering what the differences are. Oh, I don't care about using Photoshop to organize my photos. I did that when I stored them on my drive to begin with. As in your example, If I want pictures from the trip I took to Paris, I simply go to the folder of the photos I took in Paris. Ba-da-Bing, Ba-da-Boom! There they are. I do slightly agree about the Cloud. Although, there is no cloud, it's only someone else's computer (LoL!). BACK-UP Storage, no matter how you do it is a must for all photographer, not just the serious business ones. I lost photos of my dad, who has passed away, due to a drive crash and I will never get those back.

Just a tidbit of useless knowledge. Coke pulled a fast one to switch from sugar to corn syrup. Original Coke had cane sugar, "New Coke" had high fructose corn syrup and some other flavors. "Classic Coke" had high fructose corn syrup without the other flavors. You may notice he says "Classic Flavor" and not original formula...

The truth is you can do anything in Photoshop and Camera Raw that you can do in Lightroom plus a whole lot more. It may be a steeper learning curve but you can start out using it as though it was Lightroom and go from there. I started with Photoshop 3.0 with no training, (there was no RU-vid then) but still managed to edit my shots and learned as I went. To tell you the truth I am still learning new techniques every time I use it thanks to the additional functionality that Adobe puts into Photoshop every iteration.

I've been a fan of you guys for years Tony! Awesome vid as usual! I see you mention the mobile app at the 4:18 mark. I recently downloaded Lightroom on a new PC and I guess I got the simple mobile/PC software. It has a bunch of pics from last year on it and some new pics I recently took on my new Sony A7Cii. So I went back and download Lightroom Classic, which is what I thought I was getting with my first download. Is there a way to transfer the pics on the Lightroom basic to Classic? I appreciate any help!

I share all your feelings. Lightroom is way overrated after all the mumbo jumbo you just mentioned. There are better, less frustrating alternatives. I stopped using in 2017.

Nobody needs LR CC, because it's too primitive and there are plenty of alternatives, including free ones. Lightroom Classic is what you need if you are serious. And nobody really needs Adobe cloud. If you don't need much storage then there are free choices. If you need a lot, Adobe is a waste of money. I have a 28TB RAID Synology server, which also serves as a private cloud.

I pay like $9.99 a month for Creative Cloud from Adobe which includes LightRoom and Adobe Bridge and online storage. I purchased the online version because I operate from three different computers systems, plus it’s faster for me to access and edit my stuff. But when using Adobe Bridge I cannot edit RAW files in Bridge because I don’t own Photoshop or LightRoom Classic ! But, I’m paying for LightRoom online. Lol. I’m still paying so why can’t I edit raw files in Bridge? I use to own LightRoom Classic but decided to do the online version because it’s more convenient out on the road. Have I got this wrong or is there a legal workaround. Thanks.

Agree totally, LR Classic is for me the only serious LR option, I effectively ignore mobile LR. All my pics initially go to LRC most can be finessed well enough in LRC then output as needed. PS is still the 'daddy' that takes care of any 'heavy lifting edit work and oddly, just for finessing a one pixel keyline for smaller PDIs (usually pics for amateur photography competitions - aka 'projected digital images').

OMG, I just downloaded "Lightroom" and never looked back. I thought it was safe to assume that a product with "Classic" in the name was some kind of campy old program for WindowsXP. Guess what I'm playing with after work today.

I use current versions of all three apps. I have a workflow that TOTALLY syncs Lr and LrC. I 'Edit In' from either lightroom. Lr returns a .tif version of the image. LrC returns a .psd version. When the file is saved then closed in PS the new file is synced to both LR versions.

I’m new to photography and am considering an editing program. Can Lightroom Classic allow you to embed copyright information? IE: name of photographer, place where photo was shot, company name.

So i have the student package from Adobe - that gives me all the apps plus 100GB of cloud storage, i have LRC installed on my PC and i shunt all the files from my camera onto the pc and edit them in LRC and sometimes use PS for stuff i cant do in LRC. I have the LR app installed on my Z fold 4 and edit pictures on the go using that whenever iv taken images using my mobile phone, its quite handy and has a lot of decent features - i wasnt aware that it syncs with my LRC though? I need to check that out and see if the images from the cloud are also on my LRC/Pc.

Well, looks like Adobe got wise to people wanting just the LrC-"classic" version. Now it appears that you can only get LrC as a bundled option along with regular Lr and Ps for $19.99 at the time of this comment.
@annoholics

You keep calling the creative cloud online storage but that is not why it is so expensive. Online storage can be relative cheap compared to the creative cloud. The reason the creative cloud is more expensive then regular online storage is that you get a fast rendering server with it including fast graphics card, fast memory, etc. Lets just be honest. How much did you actually pay for the computer or computers to edit your photo's and video's? Is that 10K? Probably more, right? Probably way more. With Lightroom you can do all the fancy stuff from you tablet. No, the whole creative cloud is still not mature and I would not depend on it entirely but that is most likely where the Adobe research will go to.

Lightroom CC 2023 and the phone app mostly work fine for me in terms of editing and exporting for social media etc. Where I find it frustrating exporting for printing. You can’t set the dpi based on the size you want to print. You have use the formula using ppi to set dpi. I’m not even certain it makes much difference.

I don't mean to sound like a troll, but after using Adobe for almost 20 years, I finally got tired of them sucking more and more money from me for a product that has a lot of issues, I switched to Affinity Photo and have never looked back. Just as powerful. Just as useful. And a LOT cheaper. Best decision I have made for my photography business in years.

cloud storage comes with your account. never used all of the base 20gb as i do not store everything in the cloud where others can steal it (people seem to forget how many of these have been hacked), also working from cloud all the time is way slower. For back up i use local drives

I remember the good old days when Adobe used to offer perpetual licenses for their products so that you actually OWN the software outright, instead of renting it out with this crappy CC subscription service. Adobe, PLEASE go back to that and stop gauging your customers for money each month or per year to rent your products. And for people that are going to say 'oh it isn't that bad really', well that's easy for you to say.

I have the photography plan so I have both versions of Lightroom, Photoshop plus a few others. I rarely use LR. I mostly use LRC and Photoshop. I did have the app on my phone that I use when I'm on vacation when I want to post to social media. But I bracket a lot of my shots and blend the exposures so I have to use Photoshop for that. By the way, Coca Cola classic is still not the original version. They switched from sugar too high fructose corn syrup. You can actually taste the difference if you really know coke. I think they came out with new coke to drastically change the taste so that when they rolled out the "classic" coke you wouldn't know they changed something. But I noticed. Google when coke came out with new coke and when they switched sweeteners.

Thank you. I even wrote to Adobe by way of their online talk and they connected me to someone that did NOT answer my question. My question was. I purchased lightroom 4.1 which came with luminar 4 . I am looking at lightroom classic but you dont always use that terminology and I am confused. I sure dont want to buy another program if I already have it. They didnt bother to explain . They sent me a link to the comparison that I had already looked at. I asked again. They answered the same. Then said Is there anything else I can help with you. I said obviously you cant help me at all.

I do not understand what this gentleman is talking about. You subscribe to the Photography Plan and then you receive all three of those programmes, giving you the possibility to choose for yourself. In other word, you cannot make mistakes and, also, you do need Photoshop. Photoshop is a design piece of software these days.

Great video! I'm getting back into serious photography after some time away and always had Photoshop as my 'Go To'. After seeing a lot of people editing in LrC, I was wondering if I was missing out on something, or doing everything the hard way using Ps only - this helped answer that. I can second the cloud storage; I had all my important files saved on two laptops and a NAS, when our house had a lightning strike. The surge strips will protect the power feed, but won't save the ethernet - fried them all! it's heartbreaking losing all those pix!
