I might be partial but Pekka Rinne being selected almost dead last in his draft is insane as he was the backbone of a franchise that struggled for so long but was always a defensive powerhouse mainly because he was always solid. He is still the best player to ever play for them,maybe Saros will claim that spot one day if he keeps up his stellar play so far through his career or even improves,i am sure he will win the vezina at some point at least once,and teams that did not want him because of his size will regret it for a long time,hopefully he has proven that goalies under 6 feet can be franchise level goalies and other great undersized goalies will be judged by talent and not by size

Always felt the "Gretzky never being drafted" part is always a cop out because he was already signed by the WHA before he was draft eligible and the NHL had a rule that you couldn't play prior to age 20. So while he wasn't drafted, it's not because NHL teams didn't want him.

My best Doug Gilmore memory was during a broadcast from Detroit. They were talking about the new glass mics bringing "the sounds of the game". It was the first game they were being used. At some point there was a stoppage in play behind the net and the mics kicked in. Not only could you see Gerard Gallant yelling at Golmore but you could now here him too. ""Gilmore you little c*cksicker" was clearly heard from Gallant. That was the last game those mics were used.

It wasn't that nobody wanted Datsyuk. It was that he played in such a remote part of Russia that very few people knew about him. As it happens the Redwings scout that found Datsyuk wasn't even there to see him specifically. He was so impressed during that game that Datsyuk had the puck on his stick every time he was on the ice he talked him up to the Redwings draft staff. The scout himself almost didn't make it the the game as there was a serious storm just before his flight.

Datsyuk was put with Hull to help Hull's game. Zetterberg was also a steal. Lots of Europeans & Russians fell far in the draft for these reasons. Hasek was also pretty unorthodox in his play. Edmonton drafted beyond excellent. You have the greatest player of all time and surround him with Hull of Famers. Gilmour was 5'9" & 160 pounds when he was young. Played like 6'2" & 210 though.

Now the reason WHY the Hawks traded Hasek is it's own video... It was very possible if the Hawks coughed up $5,000,000 then Hasek would have stayed a Hawk - not only that but the Hawks win the Eric Lindros sweepstakes... The truth is that the Hawks could have been a dynasty in the 90's and the only reason why they weren't was because $5 million dollars and a terrible greedy owner. And few even know this... And there is no "if's" that would have happened - I don't know about the dynasty part but Hasek and Lindros absolutely.

What about Patric Hörnqvist...selected LAST overall (#230) in the 2005 entry draft by the Nashville Predators? So much ink has been spilled about the generational FIRST overall pick of that draft, making it somewhat amusing that Hörnqvist would be a critical participant in 2 Cup runs with Crosby. First and last, united. Poetic, no? Anyway, he was a hell of a steal; not too many players can say that they forged a long NHL career after having been drafted last. Granted, a few players who go undrafted still manage to make it in the NHL, some of them even peaking in the elite range...but it's not so common.

And the Habs pick for Roy was originally Winnipeg's. Robert Picard to the Jets for their 3rd round pick (Roy).

how does this player go that far in the draft, he could've been no.1 all day in any draft. Scouting fucked that up big time in 96

It's easy to forget that Lidstrom would fit into this category. Arguably the biggest steal of all time.
@brandons9138
@brandons9138 Год назад
Before Lidstrom was drafted the Redwings staff was not even allowed to talk about him using his name. They were afraid that people might over hear and draw attention to Lidstrom. He was not on a lot of other team's radar at the time.

The flames won the cup because of the hull trade. Any team would trade any player if it could garuntee them a Stanley cup.

The Blackhawks had both Belfour and Hasek at the same time. Imagine if they would of kept Hasek they probably would of won in the early 90s

dont hold me to it. But i think the Hull story. His draft stock fell because He didnt make the U18 or U21 World Junior Canada team......and having a bad attitude....he opted to play for Team USA......and then after that he just had a chip on his shoulder and didnt want to play for team canada, or in a canadian market. Hence why he always played for Team USA
