100 years old this year, the Paddle Steamer Medway Queen spent the 1920s and 30s cruising the coast of Kent and Essex, but during WWII broke her role changed dramatically, and she joined the Little Ships to evacuate troops from Dunkirk

This ship has a special place in my family’s heart. The crew pulled my father out of the sea off Dunkirk. The boat he was on was bombed the previous evening and 4 of them were all night clinging to a hatch cover by dawn only dad was alive…"

The only seagoing paddle steamer currently in operation, Waverley, was built 20 years later - yes, after the war - at a different yard and is a little larger, with two funnels, but otherwise it's strikingly similar. If you'd said that was her engine room, I don't know enough about steam engines to argue. “Going down to see the engine” was (and remains) the universal euphemism among passengers for sneaking off to the bar for a quick one. 😆 It's great to see such a historic vessel enjoying a similar level of restoration.

I have many happy memories of the old gal. As a freelance artist, I was very much involved when she was a night club on the Isle of Wight and did a lot of advertisement design. Also many delightful evenings dining and enjoying the entertainment aboard..

In the mid 1960's, our family sailed on her from Southend-on-Sea to Margate, where a relation picked us up and took us to Canterbury where they ran a University Book Shop. Presumably the Medway Queen went on from there, and we re-embarked on her return journey. I don't remember it being awfully pleasant on deck, and the Saloon was very crowded. Following her history has been a roller coaster, but I am so glad to see she is at least safe from sinking again, even though the hull is not original. I well remember standing by those reciprocating engines, though they were shiny and well oiled then. Sadly, I have no photos of the event.

Last I heard she was partially sunken - great to see her re-juvenated, thanks for the update.

After watching this video when you first released it, Mrs D and me found ourselves in Kent - ironically on the day that the friends of the Medway Queen were having an open day. We had a great time- it was so interesting and worth seeing. Thanks Matt ! 🚢

The hull was a completely new construction in the mid-2000s in Bristol. The original hull was in such poor condition, and she kept sinking, and it couldn't be used if she is to sail again. I followed the progress of the new hull's construction as I passed the dry dock on my way to work, and took several photos when she was moved into the Bristol floating harbour before she was towed away to her current home.

What a lovely steam paddle boat! Thanks for taking us to this lovely boat! Perfect for this break, only I skipped the tea and poured a glas with winters gold. ! Amazing history on this boat! Hurrah for the brave crew that resceud so many soldiers 🫡!! Hope they’ll get it operational ! And find enough funds for it! 👍🏻👍🏻🆙 like allways Matt!!

I can remember taking a trip on Queen from Sun Pier in Chatham to Southend with my parents. The trip to see engine room left a lasting impression, i went to sea an an engineer in the 70's😅

If this ship could carry 800 holiday makers on a day out, how many soldiers did she carry in one sailing from Dunkirk

I can remember watching the engine of the paddle Steamer Ryde- South Parade Pier, Southsea to Ryde in the Isle of Wight- plenty of swooshing as the paddles revolved. Ryde was retired and became a nightclub but was wrecked in a fire and I think has now been scrapped.

Paddle Boats can Run in Shallow water and not suffer damage which can occur with Screw Propeller Vessels Medway Queen should have had separate drive to each paddle which would have made it easier to turn and steer accurately.

Did watch this 4 years ago Matt and enjoyed it 👌🏻, just feel need to correct something I missed the first time ? St George’s day is 23/04 and not 24/4 😁, am a stickler for being correct and would feel so upset celebrating St George’s day a day late 😂 is like his birthday so very important and thought of having to drink 🍺 2 days on the trot is very upsetting 😂, if you believe that Matt what more can I say 😉.

I think due to leap years it might have moved over time, so to be safe have a pint both days, and the ones before and after just to make sure

I remember her mored in the Medina River on the Isle of Wight when I was a boy. She was a notorious night club until she caught fire. It was always rumoured to be an insurance job!

I can remember being in a boat with my Dad and his mate (fishing just off the end of the Herne Bay pier) when the Medway Queen started to move away from the end of the pier. The Seagull outboard refused to start and Dad and his mate had to resort to oars to get out the way of the Medway Queen. Only in later years did I consider what could have happened .................

It's a shame that a nautical National Trust does not exist to look after historical ships and not just left to individual preservation societies.
