They have to bey durable, I went halibut fishing in Vancouver Canada and let me tell you it is not easy, that are not only one of the heaviest fish you’ll see but they fight too, they are really something
I get why they didn’t. You become an instant celebrity for bringing one of these to the shore. Funny thing is the meat on these big ones is less tasty then the 30-40lb fish
@HaZe FiT89 that's awesome, I remember when he came out here. Germany sounds like a great place, you can actually fly there nonstop from Anchorage, Alaska seasonally. :)
Its actually smaller than we have caught in Dutch Harbor Alaska, which was the size of an adult tiger shark. We had to lower a skipper boat to fetch it.
I caught 82 pounder in katchamak bay at Homer in the summer of 85. Celebrated at the Salty dog saloon on the spit when we came back in. No eggs. I'm guessing it was a male. Dont matter. We ate it that night. The family I salmon fished for that summer took me there after the season was over. The old man in the family said anything under a hundred lbs. was good eating size. Old Earl was right. It was delicious. But I must admit I sure wanted to catch one of those giants I saw pictures of all over the docks where the charter boats were moored. Great memories. Hope I can go back some day.
Jesus P Christmas. You caught a Dinosaur in the water. I caught something similar. By similar I mean..A measly Flounder. Same shape atleast lol. I think Halibut and Flounder are my 2 faves to eat. I catch flounder all the time. Just never been to a cold place long enough to Halibut fish. Are big ones like this halibut good to eat or do they get mushy meat the bigger they get? Great video btw
It is true, those big one's are breeders, they are full of worms and mercury. They do not fillet out very well do to the size of the fillet so why destroy the breeders when you can catch 40/60# that are far better on all counts.
@@TheAndyharris its true for norwegian halibut I go there to fish every year and in my opinion and most people I hear say just that maybe between 8 to 40 kilogram halibut is the best to eat and never take the really big ones, they are females and lay a lott off eggs.
According to 2018 rules, it is illegal to kill any halibut over 2 metres in Norway. fish over 1.25 metres are mature and breeders. Most outfitters in Norway, including the ones in Havøysund avocate the release of any fish between 80 cm (legal size limit) and 125 cm. With the export restriction of fish fillets, of 10 kilos and 20 kilos when fishing from a registered fishing camp, the kill of a large halibut is insane and nothing more than a trophy kill.
A fine catch, but not the biggest one. What I know is that a man, also in Norway, catch a halibut with the size of more then 2,50 meter and a weight of round abound 600 american pounds. This one here is fantastic, but unfortunately not the biggest.
Thats a really big one to be that kind of halibut anyway I go to norway and fish often and that a really gaint one to be the kind of halibut we have over in scandinavia :)
According to the International Game Fish Assn., the all-tackle world record is a 459-pound Pacific halibut caught by Jack Tragis off Dutch Harbor, Alaska, in June 1996
I spent two seasons going after halibut in Alaska as a commercial fisher. They will tear a small boat apart if you bring one aboard that is still alive. As an eating fish I am not all that fond of halibut, and I can't stand the taste of smoked halibut. Give me salmon, ling cod, or Alaskan red snapper for dinner.
Ive worked on a Halibut boat for 20 years in Homer Alaska and that fish would be like eating 20 layers of old cardboard glued together, dry, tough, tasteless, nasty eat a 20 pounder that's GREAT eating
If the halibut population was in such bad shape that this one female being taken would affect their numbers in any way shape or form their would be a ban or restriction on taking them.
I do want to say that a fish that big should be let go smaller ones taste way better halibut Numbers are in trouble big fish like that one make more big fish
