I think you made an interesting point Mark… It’s very unlike Apple to discuss new AI things before WWDC with this new chip, but on the other hand.. how can they announce an M4 chip in an iPad first (which they’ve never done) and NOT talk about what it does different from the M3? I’m looking to upgrade from my MBP 2017 so I can run Sonoma, and I brought an M3 Pro just recently. I got a great deal for $1800 all in for it and Im waiting to open it since Im still within the return window. If all these crazy rumors are true (which are mostly coming from one man) and Apple REALLY does show and TALK about the M4 chip, I might just return the M3 Pro and either wait to see if I can get M4 Pro that can run Sonoma.. or try to get the M3 Pro again with an IPad together when tax free weekend comes here to the states. PS: I’d really like to talk to you more about this. You seem like the first person to voice this “M4 marketing before WWDC” dilemma and I’m trying not to get too worked up over it lol

YES, they do need a New chip. Specially with Triple A games being cross-platform with MacOS. The software doesn’t miraculously run better without better hardware.

iPad has always been ahead of the Mac when it comes to Apples chips. The entire M series is based on their iPad architecture which they started over a decade ago.

Its more like its based on ARM architecture than iPad architecture.M chip was designed for new macs and then they were released for ipad pros so consider rewriting your statement.

As an iPad Pro M2 owner, it doesn’t skip a beat with any tasks I throw at it, so getting an M4 doesn’t really excite me. New OS definitely would!!

There is no way in a billion years that they would have a separate OS for the iPad Pro range, as those devices are niche. The base iPad and the iPad Air make up most of their sales.

considering to upgrade from my ipad pro 12.9 M1 to M4, bought in the year it was first launched back in 2021. mainly because i am excited for the placement of the front camera to landscape orientation & would like to see what M4 chip can do. but OLED screens, i am having second thoughts here. Will it suffer BURN IN issue and will Apple provides 3 year burn in warranty, like those monitor manufacturers like Dell?

Maybe in your workload.. but there are lot of other stuff where the extra performance simply allow you to use more layers or more sound channels in the same time etc.. (also more and faster Video editing for the million RU-vidr, who make video about it..)

@@TamasKiss-yk4st I’m thinking you don’t understand how software works with hardware. The older M2 chip is plenty powerful enough to efficiently handle all the work you describe. The software and OS need to be upgraded in order to fully take advantage of the processor’s power.

2018 11” iPad Pro user. I’m ready to upgrade. OLED is a bonus. Hoping the price increase is not crazy. I was looking to get the 12.9 inch but if the 11 inch also has OLED I’m gonna stick with the 11 inch. I just purchased the previous  pencil awhile ago so I’ll still with it

My battery is dying in my 2017 pro, and it's driving me nuts. I'm going to replace it with something, but that something could be anything from an M1 Air to the new 13in pro. It really depends on the features and costs. An M4 will likely get me into a new pro. An M3 may mean an M1/M2 air or M2 pro. A new pencil with Find My support would be helpful after losing my last pencil though.

Great video. I have an iPad Air with pencil and it serves its purpose. I am steering far away from iPad Pro's as they are not able to use external media for editing and media tasks. You have to copy everything to the iPad first, with limited storage, which is ridiculous. So I will give it a miss and rather wait for M4 MacBooks.

@flexairz you will never get the M3 in any iPad, there are signs what clearly show that they had no plans to put that inside any iPad, imagine the news when the M3 with TFLOPS AI capacity release in the iPad, and they compare the Siri response speed with the iPhone 15 Pro with 35 TFLOPS AI capacity.. the half amount of NPU just make a huge difference in Siri response time, so they can't put that in any device with Siri (so in iPad). Same for the M3 Ultra, you will not see that, because the interconnect bridge is missing from the M3 Max, so they can't fuse 2 of those chips into an Ultra without that.

I love my iPad Pro but the battery efficiency is so so, more than features I would like to see something to improve efficiency. Thinking this M4 chip will be similar to the Intel Core Ultra as they really push the AI idea there

I think this event will all be about the iPad Air, not the Pro. The Pro is going to be launched after the release of the M4 chip with the Mac. This also explains why it's going to be a short event. +Usually, Apple doesn't use joyful/bright colors with any Pro device, which is not the case with the event logo this time.

Nothing they upgrade in hardware right now makes any difference at all because it’s still crippled by an IPad OS when it’s capable of running a desktop software. Surface Pro proved that and have been doing it for years

Apple wouldn’t need to preview/pull forward from iPadOS 18. They could announce an upgrade to Siri - with some of its capabilities on device. That would be an AI upgrade without Erving the OS.

I’ve been using a tab s9 for a lil while and the software is so refreshing. It sucks that the android App Store isn’t up to par as iPad store. But one ui is so good. Apple needs to implement more software features on iPad

Another great video Mark. Apple seems of late to be wanting to stir the release schedule up. Look at the October Mac event all three M3 variants launch at once. Now it looks like the iPad takes full front stage ahead of the iPhone and Macs with the M4. We will get iPadOS 17.5 release with these new iPads. Tim Cook as he prepares his departure from Apple certainly wants to make sure he leaves his mark on things before he goes he is laying the foundations for Apples future direction

With iPads getting chip update every 2 years might be a good thing. With software not taking advantage of the new chip that means it will take at least 2 years before your chip actually will be fully used. For us who don’t upgrade for 8+ years. We won’t be missing out on much after 8 years.

Someone at apple or multiples of need sacking!. Because their product pipeline is totally flawed and broken and that’s factually reflected in iPad and Mac sales still being down nearly 40%!. Why because they release iPads with say the M2 chip whilst the Mac Studio still had the M1 chip, and they’ve released a handful of macs with the M3 chip but left everything else with the M2 chip. If they now release a new iPad with an M4 chip that’s just killing their own product line yet again!. Because you’re going to have Mac Studio, Mac Pro, MacBook x,y and Z with M2 chips and then M3 chips whilst this random iPad has an M4 chip. So what that says to everyone is don’t buy anything M3 just wait for the M4 MacBook studio etc, meaning the upcoming M3 Mac Studio et al are dead on arrival!. Hence apples Mac,MacBook and iPad sales are down nearly 40%!. Because their lineup and release schedule is a disaster and why people need firing.

If Apple release it next week it will have to work with the current iPad OS version and for the integration with the iOS. Will they then announce a major new initiative which will be fully realised in the Autumn? OLED screen will be a good upgrade but again will it be fully realised via the software until the Autumn. Unless of course all the code is already in the current beta version of the software. It almost feels that Apple feels it needs to get something to the market sooner than they may ideally have wished???

I think the focus will be on the hardware changes, and new accessories. AI stuff will be reserved for wwdc. Whatever AI stuff we see on ipad will be the same for the rest of Apple products stack, they cant be talking about it now and still have something to reveal in wwdc

I hope it’s the M4 Pro variety. Would hesitate to buy M3 if M2 or M2 refurbs are available since the only real performance difference that matters would be mini-LED vs OLED and price. If they release M3 now and M4 again next year, there will be a lot of iPad Pro users who will disengage because they’ll feel wronged by such a short-window release. Also thought Apple didn’t want to continue using the 3B chip version so releasing M3 would keep them producing 3B chips for at least until another non-3B becomes the new for sale model.

Its not uncommon for apple to announce a product then later on release an update that has completely new features. First thing I think of is the HomePod Mini. Months later the update gave it the ability to read humidity and temperature

Thanks for the content as usual. One of my favourite channels. I think (I've pretty much posted this everywhere) is maybe Apple see this as a way (having the event in May and making it iPad as a priority) is a useful counter for the Snapdragon launch on Microsoft Surfaces. I know many don't see the Surface as competition but if Snapdragon nails it then you have a tablet that has a Desktop OS, iPad battery life, obviously AI (snore) and maybe better pricing too?! iPad would be a very hard sell then so perhaps this is Apple's way of firefighting. If so then it is good the industry is being stirred up.

Some people are easily fooled, They may well put the M4 in the new pro and people will go ‘oooh M4’ and then just fire up Netflix, Most people use ipad’s as consumption devices more than anything else from what i’ve seen and my ipad mini does that brilliantly, I just cant fathom spending all that money to do that, Just my opinion but any real work load in the Apple world requires a macbook at least

Yeah, something isn't adding up as you say; if the new iPad is getting the M4 chip then are they going to announce that as just a chip with improved speed? Surely not, they will want to push the exciting new features. And if Apple are making a big AI announcement at WWDC, then surely they won't announce that on the iPad, and anyway, wouldn't they want to save it for iOS initially? Seems a bit weird if they talk about new AI features on the M4 iPad before WWDC, and it would be a bit weird to say nothing of new AI features on a new iPad announcement until WWDC, and then say 'on yeah, these will be on the new iPad Pros too, by the way, but we didn't tell you that before'. Doesn't seem like an Apple way of doing things., a bit too messy and convoluted. iPad Pro having M3 makes more sense, or announcing it with M4 later in the year (which obviously isn't happening). Just give us a new Mini, Apple!

The iPad Pro with M3 totally make no sense, if you compare the A17 chip NPU (35 TFLOPS) against the M3 NPU (18 TFLOPS), imagine the Siri response speed difference with half of the performance.. because A17 and M3 made with a custom made 3nm (N3B) technology, it's not compatible with the upcoming standard (N3E,N3P,N3X) technology, so it was only a temporaly usage, even TSMC forget that N3B one the standard N3E is ready.. so no reason to totally redesign everything and also redesign everything in the next year too (because of the compatibility), they just redesigned some must needed chip, and going to the next step because they can improve that chip for 3 years (N3E first, N3P next year and N3X in the 3rd year and all of then compatible, so much less money if you only need to redesign/rebuild your kitchen instead of the whole house) Even the M3 Ultra is a not planed release, since the M3 Max doesn't have the interconnect bridge what requires to fuse 2 chip into one..

Oh, and for WWCD, to annoujce the AI also make sense, since developers still have half a year to make apps before the iPhone release.. and they don't need to give you the M4 iPad already (but it would be great for developers as developer toolkit), it's enough if they announce the chip before Snapdragon X Elite comes to the market.. i mean if even the 6W TDP A17 Pro chip had 35 TFLOPS AI capability, then the Qualcomm marketing with their 45 TFLOPS will fall apart after the M4 announcement.. and they still can do the Qualcomm trick, here is our chip datas and benchmarks, you can buy it 6 months later...

I think they’re possibly a little spooked by all the progress at Google & MSFT in regard to AI, and the positive financials they’ve both just posted, and realised they can’t wait for WWDC now … and will have to show something early, but still leave lots for June. So possibly we,lol hear about an on-device advanced ‘Siri Pro’ that can compete with Gemini, or new iCloud AI that the iPad Pro can leverage like co-pilot. 🤔

There will not be any AI marketing with next week's iPad announcement. The new AI will come with iOS 18/iPadOS 18 in September. Next week is just the new iPads.

Honestly, what do you do with such a processor on an iPad? I am a software engineer and have a M1 Mac, there's really 0 use for anything more powerful than that except for video editing. Smash hit would be a big and beautiful screen (~12in) with ok processor and battery life and ~500 quid price, potentially saving on some stuff (in 2024 why do we have cameras on the back of an iPad?)

Apple knows more than random people on YT and has data that indicates people are keeping tablets for an average of seven years. Therefore, anyone complaining about the overkill of a new iPad is not thinking and probably needs help understanding basic business strategies. You give your best now if people keep you for over five years, so down the line, it stays relevant. Complaining about too much power is the silliest thing I hear on YT.

@@andyH_England I mean I am all for adding a better performing chip, but that comes at a higher price point. I certainly would not want to spend 1300 quids or more on any one of them. I would assume there's a niche of users that do 4k video editing for which this might be worth it (although I'm wondering why would you not go for a laptop in that case, but that's personal preference), but, even with future proofing in mind, what percentage of users would notice any difference in performance between, say, an M2 and the new chip in the next 4-6 years on a tablet? By that time you'll still have M1 Macs and iPads lying around which are still perfectly fine

The current range of iPads are more expensive than some of the macbooks, I can't imagine how expensive M4 models going to be and as far as I know apple stop the development of the AI and will be using Google Gemini or is that only on the new iPhone 16s.

Generally A.I. processing does require a fair amount of GPU power. I think that the M4 will be the only Apple Silicon with a neural engine powerful enough to support the already incredibly trimmed-down LLM's that can run on-device. Of course Apple doesn't mind that this will entice some people to buy new Apple hardware. I very much doubt that Apple has created even more trimmed-down LLM's for older Apple hardware. Also the M4 family of chips are being manufactured on a never "3nm" node that is presumably cheaper and increases Apple's profit margin. Hopefully we also see performance boots for generic CPU and GPU performance because that will enable more high-quality games to run on a new high-end iPad. For me none of this will matter unless they greatly improve iPadOS and make it closer in functionality to macOS. The good news is that I will probably get things like a Bash shell later this year because I reside in the EU irrespective of whether iPadOS gets opened up more or not. I am one of those very uncommon Mac users that mostly prefers the command line for file manipulation as I am coming from Linux and UNIX.

The EU regulations do not specify that Apple has to open up a Bash line interface. I am not sure why you think that the EU regs are anything more than allowing apps that would be allowed in the Apple Store instead of being allowed in the ALT store?

They will market the AI capabilities but will 100% not announce AI features. That will be for WWDC. The iPad announcement is a pre-recorded short video, so it will be only a product announcement focusing on the new design, OLED display, and accessories. The Pen may, in fact, get more airtime than each iPad.

I don't think they will tell us anything about iPad OS. They will reveal the new hardware and focus on the hardware like the new pencil, the M4 chip, the Neural Engine, OLED screens etc and then leave us in suspense for WWDC. That's my guess anyway.

Apple will likely move to a 2-year upgrade cycle for tablets as the market is declining due to consumers upgrading less often, around seven years on average, according to Apple data. So, releasing the M4 iPads earlier than other devices can make them still relevant in two years, when I assume they will have M6 iPads.

They need a new pencil because moving the camera changes how the charging coil and magnets are placed. They need a new iPad Mini because the old one is… old. They DON’T need new iPad Pros because the current ones are fantastically capable, and (as others have noted), the hardware is MUCH better than the software you can run on it. There’s no need to make the hardware better (OLED is only slightly better than mini LED, and mini LED is just a bit better than IPS). So unless they make a software step change, the 2020 iPad Pros (which are the A12Z chip!) will remain fine for years - never mind the M1 or M2s. M4? Why? Overkill in an iPad. M4 is NOT overkill in a Mac Studio.

I said For me (line 3) side car for my Mac (line 3) As a customer I will judge devices how I use them as that is the basis as I would buy them. So my purchases are defined on a concept for my usage and as a customer that is how I make decisions.

I recommend just buying a laptop; if you need a tablet functionality, have both. MacOS is never coming to an iPad as MS tried an all-in-one desktop tablet, which proved a non-starter and meant they missed out on a meaningful tablet presence. Why would Apple copy that disaster? That is why Samsung also dumped their Windows tablets. Ergo, a desktop OS on a tablet is compromised, and MS has shown this.

The M4 iPad offers exactlly same functiins as the iPhone in terms of its operating system, they are basically the same .. However, considering the cost efficiency and enhanced functionality, opting for a laptop might be a more advantageous choice as it provides a broader range of capabilities compared to a larger iPhone variant.

We need some agreed definition of what “AI” is before using it as a marketing gimmick on every new product. I worry “AI” will be used as an excuse to make a lot of hardware and software faux redundant forcing us all to go out and spend more money because our old software won’t run on new computers and our old computers won’t run with the latest OSs.

The one thing for sure is the Ipad will have more power under the hood than their iPad OS will be able to take advantage of. The iPad PRO has nothing PRO about it. Apple could give us an iPad Pro 14" with dual boot ( iPad OS and MacOS ) if they wanted to, but they don't. They want us to buy their laptop and an iPad. With the new Qualcomm chips coming out, it's going to be really interesting to see some Tablets the size of an iPad and larger with full windows and adobe creative suite support along with pen support. Something Apple STILL doesn't have even with the best hardware. They have squandered their chance IMO. People are tired of paying $2k for a pro Device that doesn't support real apps.

In a couple of years, iPads will have a larger gaming portfolio with more pro apps. This means that the M4 iPads will be relevant even then. I am bewildered by people who complain about too much performance and probably whine about slower SSD speeds and such. No sensible person complains about a chip designed to be useful in 5-7 years; you are crazy to do so.

After nearly 10 years of iPad OS there is virtually no Pro level apps to put this hardware to use. And yes, there are many reasons to want Pro level app support on the iPad. The apple Pencil support with Adobe Creative Suite would be a designers dream if Apple also gave us a 14" version. Look, if you don't like options that's fine. But many of us would love more options, including the ability to boot into MacOS or Ipad OS - If you don't need it, sure, feel free to blow 2K on a glorified e-reader that you can take with you to "game on" - Cool

Rather than new hardware and a calculator app we need iOS 18 to deliver pro software and a usable file management system. Until then, the iPad is the most powerful useless computer ever made. I do love using it but I’m just not productive with it and have to got to my MacBook Pro.

While I agree that the TRUE AI iPhone chip will be the A18 Pro, the A17 Pro still has 35 TOPS of AI performance so hopefully will still be able to do all or at least most of the things that the A18 Pro can do. Fingers crossed because I have a 15 Pro Max and I don't want to upgrade until the iPhone 17 Pro Max. 2 years is my preferred upgrade cycle.

This won't happen but I'd like to see Apple trim its iPad lineup so that they have just two ranges - the Air and the basic iPad. The iPad Pro is not a pro device because of the software and they won't professionalise it (not a word) as it would conflict with their range of Macs. I think they should have 4 iPad Airs - each with a 120Hz screen: an Air Mini, an 11" Air, a 12.9" Air and a 12.9" Air Plus that has the new OLED screen. Forget the Pro moniker as it's meaningless.

The biggest impact Apple could make is a redesigned iPad with a redesigned iPadOS. A Pro iPad is presumably partly intended for professional level colour work such as pro level photo apps like photoshop. So far OLED displays have not been suitable for this kind of work. So either the new OLED iPads have a new level of OLED technology or they are a gimmick

Oh yea and I literally don’t listen to or believe a word mark gurman says!. He was wrong about most of the M2 Mac’s and when they’d be released, wrong about multiple iPads in previous years. I’m beyond confident he’s 100% wrong about the iPad having an M4 chip. As it makes no sense itll make all their other products dead on arrival unless everything now comes with an M4 chip. It will be the usual splash of new wine in a slightly different bottle, with a few teasers of stuff in the pipeline. In other words, little or nothing to enhance the day to day experience for the vast majority of iPad users. Apple is only interested in squeezing as much juice from the lemons in mature markets, whilst securing more lemons in developing markets. Whilst relying on RU-vid ‘influencers’ and reviewers to ratchet up the unjustified hype to obscene levels.

They just seriously need to innovate, create a newer type of device which everyone will want..and Apple Vision Pro wasn’t it. @@andyH_England Not necessarily. Let’s say you get a MacBook Pro 16GB, 512GB and use it only for browsing and watching movies. A MacBook Air can do the same and will last as long. The thing with people is, they think they’re going to use all of the power that is advertised with these products. They think “oh maybe I will need to edit some photos in the future, better get the Pro.” No you f**** won’t. This is one of the many reasons Apple became the most valuable company in the world.
