I have just found your channel. The way you explain everything is so easy to understand. When painting wet on wet I learnt from Anne Kerr a little rhyme to remember. The wetter the paper the drier the paint.

Much enjoyed !I was given a Winsor & Newton watercolour paint box when I was 12 but never shown how to use it. It is only now that I am 81 with the help of RU-vid and videos like this that I have got the hang of it. Great tips by the way. One thing I think would have helped me is that when I di take some expensive classes my teachers always used huge A3 very expensive papered washes like this for a beginner were almost impossible, Start small A5 and to begin I used cheap 200 g paper so I could have lots of goes and not use too much expensive paint or paper. Actually once you get the hang of cheap paper it has a wonderful look as it is so white and smooth. Water colour needs the white to show through. Now I use it for a draft and then do it again on expensive 300g textured paper. Some time I prefer the cheap smooth paper as I get sharp lines. What I learned is not to be afraid . You can make mistakes, like your cauliflowers. You can get rid of them. Why don't teachers show us how to get rid of our mistakes instead of throwing them away or having to live with them. One can just remove them with a bit of patience with clean water, even huge areas, dry and try again. And the drawing must be accurate. The human eye is unforgiving. David Hockney has a very useful RU-vid video on how to do this. All the modern masters use the camera to advantage including Singer Sergeant who also used white paint,. His paintings are super accurate. You can see his drawings and he cropped his photos. Regretfully I am too old now to ever get past the talented beginner. I copy watercolours of the masters to see how they did it and I have learned that watercolours do a lot for you, too. When I have given up on a painting I just leave it and by magic watercolour does it for me. Did this with one of Artefact's tutorials on wet on wet as I had the paper too wet and also the tutor was skilled at the way he used his brush strokes. I was in despair but when I returned the next morning the result was stunning. Watercolours take time. Why wasn't I shown all this when I was young.I now have no time left to take courses. If I were younger I should take the lot as you are all so skilled. Thank you for helping us.

I agree with you on many aspects and thoughts that you shared!🙂 However, I disagree in one point, which is that it may be too late to further invest in your passion. I hope the opportunity arises for you to take workshops or classes to expand your skills and explore watercolours more.😊 It can do so much, be it to surround yourself with like-minded people who share your passion. I love attending my classes, and I feel like I'm also still at the talented-beginner stage. And who knows if I ever get out of it, as at times I feel like I lost all skill and can't paint at all!😅 Luckily, thanks to those classes, I get reassured and inspired to keep going. I hope you can find a class, a group, or a workshop that gives you this motivation and that thoughts about lost time get pushed in the background. From what I have gathered, it's that it is never too late. I met many people in classes, who were in their retirement and have just started to pursue their interest. It surely could've been nice if it had happened earlier, but it is here now. 😊 I hope you don't read this as any sort of judgment, but rather and hopefully, as encouragement 😊 All the best to you and your art!
