At least as soon as his parents notice that they were more then coworkers, they are extremly caring and loving, while not having any money issues a mental health check for their son and a physical health check (as well as mental help)for justin their adopted son should be expected after he lived on the street addicted to Heroin.

That's probably the point. He hid all his emotions deep down and constantly kept surpressing it and it turned into major issues for him. Children dont tell their parents, teachers or friends about their feelings. This show really hammers in the effects of not doing so.

Seriously, they spend the whole last season's showing how they struggle and can't cope with what they have done. You don't need to sit behind bars to be imprisoned. I mean Clay alone attempted some form of sucide at least twice this season. And Alex directly stated that he probably will never be able to forgive himself. Their conscious is plaguing them so bad, that telling the truth and facing consequences would probably feel more liberating than anything. Hence Clay's alter ego constantly tring to tell them to come clean. Although, if one of them would do that they make the choice for everyone around them.

zach was most people's favourite character tbh cos he was the one person had a good morality about him and seemed the most real character... until this season where he just does a 180 before this season he seemed really grounded and a decent person who cared about his friends and his future idk they just ruined zach completely which i really hated about this season especially the almost rape thing cos he worked hard to turn the jocks around and against doing that sort of stuff, then to suddenly do that out of nowhere? just doesn't make any sense whatsoever to me

If Bryce had to hear a tape of a dead girl pinpointing him as a reason for why she ended her life for him to realize that what he was doing is wrong after raping or/and assulating alot of girls in their shed , did he really deserve the redemption they were trying to sell?

none of them were punished for their crime, that was like the 1 thing I wanted to happen this season, for all of them to get arrested for what they did in the previous season cuz I thought "no way they can keep this covered and live happy lives after that" nope. everybody gets a great life and lives on happy and healthy, except the one guy who actually kinda deserved a happier life apparently...

Can we discuss zachary dempsey's super human healing ability , his knee injury in S3 was so serious it should've took him atleast 1 year in crutches but nah he literally walks a hours after the injury using a knee brace , he gets beaten up by diego and the following morning he is unmarked , he is in a fatal car crash and goes out with *just* a broken arm and its gone like weeks later

They definitely should've kept Justin alive. He was really the only character with any character development. Killing him off basically tells the audience, "You can struggle really badly at life, get better and be positive about it, only to die to soon while your friends get away with crimes and learn nothing from their actions.'

They did my boy Justin dirty. He was getting his life together, becoming better and was heading to a successful future he never thought he could have. I agree, he should’ve gone to college and I wish he did but... 😭

Justin’s mom’s death would make such a good contrast w his “survival” i mean she never got out of that life and died, and he did and “survived” that would give such a good message but they went with the drama, impact and shock, that’s how they wanted us at the end

Michaela Bald not to mention most of the characters were terrible people. Barely any good help was shown in the first two seasons (I didn't watch 3 or 4). If there was a time to push help and support, it was season 1 and 2 centring around suicide and rape.

And I feel like even when they do talk to adults...they make it seem like they´re all dumb and the enemy :/ they don´t even trust their parents, let alone counselor or police

BUT, i gotta say Clay actually annoyed the FUCK out of me in this season because of it. Everyone asked him what the hell was up with him, and he just stood there and said literally nothing. The worst scenes being the ones with his parents.

If you check the statistics of how many black people are in America, they won't match how many black people are in a Tyler Perry movie. You know why, because stories pick perspectives. A perspective means there's things included and things excluded. This show was about 20 or so people who knew each other in a high school of hundreds of people. The people who know each other end up having things in common such sexuality for example If a movie is about black people, it can easily only contain black characters because it's highly likely the black people mostly know other black people. Yeah I found it super weird and annoying that medication was never even mentioned as an option? Therapy is great but it does not seem like enough for his case at all, especially with his severe (and dangerous) physical symptoms

Clay went to his psychologist and really went through a lot in his life, like going to the mental asylum after the whole school shooting scenario really proves the point that he didnt want to go to any secluded place to get treated. I'm pretty sure people with depression/anxiety/a tough life, will always look for new beginnings and healing on their own rather than going to therapy, especially if you're a highschool student. You would wanna just try to live your life. So I think him going to college was a sort of new start for him where he can move on from his past and look forward to a better future while working on his mental health.

Did the writers conveniently forget medication exists? Are we expected to believe that Clay's psychiatrist was aware of his disassociating but never prescribed medication for it?

This series' main message was to point out how mental health and traumatized events can have impact on your life. Also how differentialy people are going through some of things

Exactly. With the shows meaning they didn't need seasons three and four. I think season 1 had a great meaning and opened the door to multiple issues. Season three and four was like Riverdale with shit mental health.

But instead we have these wishy washy lines about how you can love people who did terrible things. But all we ever saw from Monty while he was alive was negative so we can’t sympathize. It would’ve really made the show better if they had really deep dived into montys life even if it was sick and twisted that’s what the whole show kinda is anyways.

The showrunners either never went to school or it's been so many years since they were that they don't remember what it was like or how much it's changed since they were there.

they forgot to show the fun carelessness of being a teen they showed only the depressing bits with tiny fun parts something i love about teen dramas is how characters would have so much fun being young and rebellious while also balancing it out with the dramatic depressing side of it all i loved the early seasons but this show became so tiring watching them constantly go through bad things with barely any interruption

@@meda04 Exactly. The death of Justin makes Clay's speech much more valuable about how life will not always be fine and perfect. Without his death, it would've just been another cliché speech about life.

But I think the point was, to show that if you do these things, you can end up like Justin in the series. I think it's more powerful than hope that although someone does drugs can live happily after all...so yeah. I was also sad that they done this to his character but this show is mostly about possible bad endings that can happen in real life

They made that point his message was seen. He finally had a family and a happy life after recovery and that message was seen so many times. Once that was clear, they were able to make the show a show and kill him off for the purpose of the storyline and very emotional reaction for almost all of the viewers

I also believe they did this to show, like the psychiatrist said, there’s not always a “happy ever after” but Clay survived high school and will continue to live and get through it, which was (as the youtuber said) the “one sentence theme”

Indeed the show puts the worst scenarios in one place and I really felt depressed after watching it but I always saw something positive in almost all the episodes. Maybe nothing big but still. The things that are important, friendship, love, family were always there. But I think everyone can feel different after watching it. I know people who I would never recommend it and would hate every second of it. I also didn't enjoyed the show because how could you enjoy this traumatic events but I think it was still important for me to see it and be more aware of some things. These things do happen in real life. It's like someone put some of them in a series and made some plot to it to connect it but still these things are present in real life. And someone could also have many traumatizing events in their life with no positive thing happen at the same time you know...life can also be that way. Every person has it's own story and it can have different outcomes depending on actions they take. Life sometimes has no happy ending that's why people and even myself enjoy shows, movies, storys that has positive outcomes because we need it to never loose hope. To feel better even in hard times. Life can be hard, sick and worst but it also is very precious, beautiful, full of love. The series just shows the less positive side of it. It doesn't have to be the perfect show to enjoy. I don't think it glamorizes self sacrifice. The death scene was scary, cold, lonely and sad and didn't bring Hanna anything. She died alone and sad. She was dead..all of her friends did listen to her and realized something but Hanna was still dead. Her parets traumatized. Everyone had a way to deal with it, at the end they lived and could at least enjoy life more or less. She was still dead. Her suicide was pointless and that is how I see it. She could have record tapes, write a letter with all this or even talk to them. She could say how she feel and it would bring her more and probably do the same. Suicide never brings something to you, but it still happens a lot. The show is a reminder that although life can e so hard it is important to go through it and keep going. The characters had to deal with so traumatic experiences but they did make it at the and. Everyone of them could be suicidal and end like Hannah but they did different choices and they lived, had fmilies and friends around them and it was so important for them to see them, see that there are people who care about them even if they thought they are alone. But that's my point of view. Everyone has their own interpretation of the whole series

Right it was just a giant slog...the show had almost zero happy moments in season 4 to actually make the characters likeable or have a happy moment or anything. They just focused on all the little negative stuff and never showed anything else to make the show more fleshed out and to give a more realistic message

But it makes sense because he used to have sex for drugs. Believe it or not having unprotected (or sometimes even if you are protected but its not 100% effective) sex will result in those consequences. Yes, he was going thru shit but no one is immune to bad things happening.

It was realistic though. Justin has been self-destructive for a very very long time. Yes he got better but that did not erase the past. The idea is he never reached out for help or got tested or talked about his struggles with his family or friends. He would always brush it off like he didn’t matter because deep down he thought he didn’t matter which Lead to his death. If he spoke up when he started to feel off or he got himself tested and talked to someone about it he wouldn’t have died. The message the show is trying to say is reach for health before it’s to late. But still sucks he died

Pretty Gurl Flexin he wouldn’t have gotten AIDS that fast. HIV takes up to 10 years before it becomes AIDS. In the timespan this show takes place in and the implications of the HIV coming from the drugs and sex during is time homeless, which was his Junior year, he wouldn’t have it be then. If they wanted to kill him off, they could’ve just had him die from an overdose because of his bad relapse after his mom’s death.

Justin wanted to break up with Jessica because their relationship got in the way of his recovery from drugs and abuse and she makes it about herself. She then has the audacity to tell him that he makes everything about him.

Also... He lived in the streets like a year prior to the current events. No HIV infection turns to AIDS in a year. It usually takes a couple years and even decades for that to happen.

In proper care you can prevent it for decades but with neglegency it will happen within 6 months , like constantly using needles , taking fight and getting cuts , certain foods , having sex multiple time is the things which increases the chances of Hiv to turn into AIDS

jasmine blount maybe it was in season 1 but then it turned into a damn riverdale type murder mystery that was crammed with social issues. i understand that everyone has their own opinion and that the show has helped you but far more bad has come out of this show than good. the warnings were put in specifically because people were very badly triggered by the scenes and the fact that kids watched this show when they showed such graphic imagery?? awful. i get that showing that kinda stuff is for shock value but physical suicide, rape, and school-shooting scenes were completely unnecessary.

Tony Gunk trigger warnings were always there i watched it the day it came out and there was 3 trigger warnings one on the first episode and then ones on the episodes that had the graphic scenes and kids watching it isn’t the shows fault and no one was forced to watch it either

They killed Justin because as you have pointed out nothing else happens everything is conveniently wrapped up like the police officers stalking them you think they are trying to catch the kids for murder until the last episode the officers are like oh no we have been watching the kids because we care let's let the murdering kids go free and go to college it's fine if they killed someone we won't tell. What?!?!?!?

I think the last season is them trying to deal with what they did or trying to deal with people who might be angry because of what they did. Winston and his little sister wanted to know who killed Monty so they could get payback and the other part of the show was showing how covering the murder of weighed on there conscience while also exploring Clays growing mental instability. The reason the last season feels dry is because of the lack of consistency and good delivery. Clay crashed Zacks car and Zack gets over it in like 10 minutes. Clay sees visions of Monty and Bryce haunting him and no explanation is given. Justin tries to find his mom but we never see that. Jess is haunted by visions of Bryce but we never get any explanation for it. So much happens and we don’t ever see a good explanation for it.

R. O. S. E The first season showed us that if you have mental health issues you should try your best to get help. It didn't glorify suicide. It pretty accurately showed how mean kids are at high school and how it can ruin someone's life. It doesn't glorify anything. I think you got the wrong message. Throughout the whole season it told us that Hannah made the wrong decision. Season one was perfect in its message and storytelling. The other seasons could not live up to that standard unfortunately.

Schizophrenia =/= multiple personalities. The seasons before? Yes, you can make a case for schizophrenia, but saying it is schizophrenia with this last season would be more harmful. Frankly, the large majority of people with schizophrenia are also not violent/aggressive, so having a kid with aggressive outbursts have schizophrenia would just support inaccurate stereotypes. But revealing that aggression/anger/frustration can be symptoms of depression and/or anxiety? That is more beneficial because, for example, we think depressed people are only ever sad or hiding that they are sad, when in actuality, especially in men, anger can be a symptom of depression. Generally, 13RW is still really bad about mental health representation and education, but these two choices are pretty good ones.

I mean, they had to break up due to distance and Clay not entirely being over Hannah, so it would be so awesome if they could be together with these issues out of the way!

Sure, faith can help hut faith won't fix your brain if there's something not working properly. I know you are trying to help but lots of people aren't religious and constantly being told that Jesus can help is frustrating. I called a suicide Hotline once when I was very close to attempting suicide and the lady told me that I need to believe in Jesus and that my mental problems are a result of my refusal to believe. Don't push your religion onto people who are emotionally fragile. Religion isn't for everyone. If you have schizophrenia or a personality disorder religion won't fix that, a doctor will. I sincerely hope your faith helps you personally, but for me it's the most insulting and hurting thing to constantly hear that I wouldn't be depressed if I put my trust into Jesus.

No shit Sherlock. That's clearly what they tried to portray. Ani was just doing the nurse/the mom for him. There wasn't any love. They just cared about eachother. And they were lonely. And they needed to help eachother, to give some affection, to feel useful. So they did.

The thing is, atleast Ani TRIED, like she helped clay with a lot of stuff and she actually made their relationship seem genuine by calling him sweetheart and stuff and even inviting him to the dance, which he at first seemed TOTALLY uninterested in but later on accepted the offer (And then they broke up at the dance). Clay was pretty much an asshole to Ani, he literally dismissed her every damn time she tried to ask him if he was fine or just walked up to him. Sure, maybe he was busy and stuff, but it's not like he would die if he talked to Ani instead of doing whatever he was "supposed" to do.

I honestly believe season 2 and onward could have been a much better show if they had a better story to tell, but they didn't.

Bojack was amazing, it gave me a whole new outlook in life. Meanwhile 13rw gave me so many triggering moments that I immediately stopped watching by season 2. Can't believe a show about a horse was way more real than 13rw.

Yes I certainly believe that small comments, not thought through actions and downright ignoring others mental state (like when the person is prone to depression) can lead to self isolation and even suicide. And it is very important to talk about those issues in public. But depression in itself is a mental disorder where the person suffering is making themselves(!!) responsible for all the shit they have to go through. So the tapes make no sense whatsoever. I really tried watching the show but because I read the book and wasn't a fan of the portrayal of mental illness I had to stop about two episodes in.

I think the only reason they added that was because they decided one more social issue that has no relevance to the plot couldn’t hurt. And they didn’t even have the balls to do it properly. They chickened out and had the “shooting” as a drill. If you really want to do something, especially something as relevant in today’s society as mass shootings, then please do it right.

He didn’t even kill Bryce, but he might as well have with the way he was acting. He acted more guilty than fucking Alex, who actually pushed him off the ledge. and yeah Clay is mentally ill, but the moment he realized he was dissociating and hurting people, he should’ve swallowed his pride and been properly checked into a mental hospital.

I don't know, the whole point of him going psycho was because he was neglecting his mental health. Repressing all that trauma can make a person mad. That sense of madness is also heightened because of puberty. Clay was fucked up because he didn't deal with his issues directly. Either way, this season was a damn mess.

This was the first time I’ve ever yelled at a character in real life, he said that nasty shit to Justin at the party and I literally went, “What the fuck, clay.”

I don’t think it was trying to be Euphoria at all. I think it was pretty much what was already established since season 2, piling on a bunch of serious topics yet not knowing how to handle any of them for the sake of drama and views, and ending up creating a huge mess. There’s no fantasy or illusion of happiness in this show like there is in Euphoria, everything is painful, traumatic, and annoying in this show.
