The "my video didn't do well" feeling sounds a lot like the "my paper got rejected" feeling we have in academia. But you learn from it and go on building the reputation regardless!
Applying for internships as a CS student also feels similar. Send out tons of job applications, get rejection emails, feel sad for a bit, then move on and keep sending in applications. I've made so many tweaks to my resume so definitely a learning experience for me too :)
I've been in both places and I would say having a paper rejected is worse, as it's usually the work of months or years and the people evaluating are real experts. The RU-vid algorithm has some miseries that make me not take it too personal if a video does well or bad.

As an accountant in the UK - good points on that front! People often forget that while "allowable expenses" do technically reduce your tax, you need to be making enough profit to pay tax in the first place AND the expense will (almost) always cost you more than it will save you in tax. At the end of the day, the simplest solution is to only spend on things you need (in a business setting - obviously in personal life we all deserve some treats now and again!).
omg I would love to have someone like you as a project manager! No matter how much planning I do, I always underestimate how long each task will take me and I fall way behind schedule. The self-employed struggle!!
I'm an influencer marketing manager, so it's super great to hear this much detail from the influencer POV! I'm glad that what you're saying is pretty aligned with the experience I expect that the influencers are having on the other side of the negotiations 🙂
Personally I tend to zone out when some sponsor message comes up. I feel if there was nore room for nuance i would be nore interested in actually getting the product as those downsides snd not knowing how to manage them prevent me from getting the product or services.
I agree because so many youtubers keep getting the same brand deals over and over again and there is only so many times you can hear the same exact script and have it have any effect on you. And sometimes I feel like doing a "smooth transition" from the topic they're talking about to the sponsored bit makes the whole thing even less genuine. Like how much of the video was altered to slot in that ad so well?
I agree, a couple of times I've actually got a RU-vidr sponsored thing after seeing criticism of it! It made me curious to actually try the thing and find out for myself vs just thinking "this is just an advert, I can ignore it"
Fun! I highly relate to loving work and parenting, and definitely not wanting to parent full time while sometimes still missing my kid while at work. So many mixed emotions! Little humans are wonderful, and also intense and exhausting.
I love the videos where you break down the behind the scenes stuff of being an influencer or when you just talk about financial related things in general. I feel like so little of business and financial aspects of life are discussed in school unless you take specific classes on them in university which is so frustrating because everyone has to deal with them at some point and then so many people just end up lost and confused

I know revenue is based on minutes watched, so if I watch the whole video does it count the 20 minute length of the video or the 10 minutes I actually had it playing?
For the "Do you think the stigma around your job is getting worse or better"....I would like to hear how different the answer would be to "being a sex and relationship educator" and not just "being an influencer".
Everything I watch on RU-vid is from my watchlater page (which is fueled by my subscriptions page). I'm currently 12 days behind... But sometimes I'm three weeks behind, and sometimes I'm only an hour behind. It depends what's going on and if it's Vlogmas.
I wanted to know about how working freelance as someone with a chronic illness or disability (I’m not sure how you class UC) works. How do you find the lack of security and lack of sick pay during flare ups? And is it outweighed by the benefits of flexible working that come from working freelance and being able to work from home? I ask as someone with a chronic illness that’s recently graduated and I’m struggling with the idea of working a full time 9-5 but I do think I need the security of a PAYE salary with sick pay because of my illness so it’s hard
I can relate to this. I'm trying to have it both ways, have a part-time job and becoming a freelancer on the side. Not sure if this is a great idea but this is my (although very loose) plan at the moment.
It’s such an individual decision because many disabled/chronically ill people can’t work a PAYE job because of the office hours/lack of flexibility so gravitate more towards freelance. But you’re right there’s the lack of security with sick pay etc… my only real experience of my illness affecting my job was 2017/2018 when I was in hospital and my surgeries so couldn’t work. The thing that helped me was having passive income streams (Adsense, affiliates, Patreon) and savings. So always having an emergency fund (personal and business) so you can still pay yourself if you can’t work.
Just don’t hear from them. But there was one brand who wanted to sponsor a video on the HW sex ed channel and it was all agreed, I filmed it, edited and sent it over for their approval and then some higher up was like ew no it’s related to sex we can’t. And so they pulled out. I still got paid though and I uploaded the video just without the ad lol!
