was the obvious path to recouping some of that R&D money. Especially when it's solid win in the handheld market and a way to up steam sales AND a way to give vr devs something else to develop/test on. I wager we'll be seeing cross play games with deckard and steam deck/pc shortly after release. It's way too easy to expand a player base for vr devs this way. practically matching hardware and an expected baseline for performance.

Using Steamdeck as the foundation for Deckard's hardware and software is brilliant and lets them get the linux OS communities get fine tuned for gaming so that Windows can get dumped overboard as Microderp runs itself into the ground. I switched to Linux months ago now and with every step Valve takes to improve Linux compatibility/support makes it less and less nessisary for me to keep a Windows 10 VM or Dual boot around, So Long live GNU/Linux, the FOSS community, and the awesome folks at Valve

Main things I want to see out of SteamVR: - Expanded theater mode with a SBS 3D function and Steam Remote Play Together that use the SteamVR Destinations avatars, kinda like a Bigscreen Beta - Linux support on par with the windows version, including the use of SteamVR Destinations SDK without the use of WINE/Proton - WINE/Proton support for SteamVR overlay apps like Portable Farm/Portable Emulator, FpsVR, Natural Locomotion, OVR Locomotion Effect, etc. - SteamVR Store (Turns steam store into like, a customizable 3D gamestop of sorts, hopefully with steam workshop support for templates, brings the fun of physical shopping into the digital era) - Cutiekeys style virtual keyboard. - Bring controller model customization back like we could when OG Vive controllers were popular These are the only things I think SteamVR is lacking right now, the rest are simply bugfixes like making the camera passthrough work again.
@WMan37
@WMan37 2 года назад
@Game Over Honestly, if only 2 of the things on my wishlist come true, I would hope it'd be the linux support and the cutiekeys thing. I pretty much only keep a windows partition around at this point for VR. I'm ready to move on from windows after this happens, this is pretty much the final obstacle, I can miss out on a few EAC games with stubborn developers who won't check the box that allows it and not be too broken up about it.

@happysmash27
@happysmash27 2 года назад
@Game Over I do everything exclusively on Linux including VR. SteamVR is, by far, the most buggy app I use with any amount of consistency, and basically my only major pain point with exclusively using Linux at the moment. It's so bad that, as much as I would love to recommend Linux for everything, I just can't recommend Linux for VR. It works, yes, but it's ridiculously buggy (some bugs like one that freezes my graphics stack when I start SteamVR with other 3D apps at the same time are particularly catastrophic) and lots of features do not work properly. I would only recommend it if you're really, really determined not to use a proprietary OS or can't afford Windows (both are the case for me), and I would, hesitantly, recommend VR if you are already on Linux. I really, really would love better support. I do not have any Windows install, so having better Linux support in SteamVR would help so much in making my VR experience better. It would also hopefully result in more people doing VR on Linux which would hopefully push userbase numbers enough to get slightly better support from Unity, etc.
@happysmash27
@happysmash27 2 года назад
I am glad to know I am not the only one who wants better support in SteamVR on Linux. I meet people in VRChat who use Linux surprisingly frequently, but usually they are not running VRChat _on_ Linux probably because SteamVR is so terribly buggy. More people who want this hopefully will mean that more support will come sooner.
@WMan37
@WMan37 2 года назад
@@happysmash27 There's also the fact that video players in VRChat under proton are broken right now as far as I can see but that's equal parts a VRChat problem and a proton problem. Which is a shame because VRChat otherwise runs just fine, but not having video player support takes away one of my main uses of VRChat which is movie night.

"deckard_devtools" (breathes in paper bag to suppress hyperventilating). Regarding price, one lesson Valve learned from Steam Deck is that there is more demand at the higher end than they expected. Even if there isn't a product announcement in July, this progress and them featuring VR are both very positive.
@gvulture1277
@gvulture1277 2 года назад
They learned that but that doesn't mean they wont see the value of more affordable products. Keep in mind the Deck is a handheld PC which is versatile to play decades of games whereas VR is in its infancy and outsiders only see Half Life Alyx, Astro Bot Rescue Mission and only a few others as "must play" VR games. It's a harder sell to make Deckard cost close to what the Index costs because many will continue to be turned off. Valve needs to be competitive with Oculus Quest if their goal is to get more gamers to own a VR headset. If their goal is to be a sequel to the Index then they will get the same customer base at a $1k price point which isn't great for gamers.

@zwenkwiel816
@zwenkwiel816 Год назад
@@ManlyOBeeferton do you not know what competively priced means or something?XD no1 buys just the base model without tracking stations or controllers. in practice the $1000 set is like the bare minimum. add to that the requirement for a PC and you won't really be done for less than $2000 (assuming you start from scratch which a lot of consumers have to do since they don't own powerful gaming PC's) now put that opposite to the quest 2 which is like $400 bucks and offers a complete VR experience out of the box. Like loads of parents bought a quest (2) for their kids. I doubt very many bought their kids a VR capable PC and an Index. they're just not even competing really. granted true gamers know that PCVR is where it's at and the quest's XR2 chip just doesn't compare but for the regular consumer that doesn't matter as much, they just wanna play beat saber and Richie's plank experience or something. also airlink and virtual desktop work surprisingly well and again the average consumer won't care that the index looks better cuz it has no compression if the headset is more than twice as expensive. (and wireless VR is really a big improvement over wired VR so I'm guessing Deckard will have to do Wifi streaming as well)

We could really use integrated 3D gaming for non-VR titles within the theater mode! Think VorpX (like Nvidia 3D Vision functionality within VR) - built into the SteamVR theater mode. I'm hoping they go for the modular upgradable approach. I think they have learned a lot from the Steam Deck release and how most were interested in 512 version, but many still bought the 64gb model to upgrade themselves. It would add so much value to the VR market it would be insane. Those that want the best right away without fiddling get what they want, those that prefer to fiddle will be happy, and those that can't afford the best right away can look forward to an upgrade base model path. Do you think this headset will have reduced weight? I love my index but at 800 grams it really strains my neck. I’m concerned that with this headset also being standalone it won’t be much lighter since having a battery and such.
@livingfray2340
@livingfray2340 2 года назад
I've heard that the weight isn't so much of a problem as the distribution of it is (i.e. 95% of the weight being in front of your eyes) and that adding a counterbalance at the back can help with that. Maybe valve will put things like the battery at the back of the headset to combat this
@kilsnacks
@kilsnacks 2 года назад
@@livingfray2340 weight is indeed a big problem for me personally. I have used quite a few VR headsets extensively and added counter weights to make headsets perfectly balanced such as the index and quest 2. I can 1000% say the added weight makes it even worse even though it’s more even feeling my neck feels like it’s been hit with a hammer after using VR. But I do use Vr for 6-15 hours a session which is likely much higher than most people.

The rear unit will also give Valve the capability to put a couple tracking cameras on the rear of the unit so hand tracking behind the head/back will not be lost! Can't believe you didn't mention this. Maybe because it was referenced in the leaked docs but its just "common sense" or logic if you have a rear unit, why not take advantage of it and offer something no one else yet has, good tracking in stand-alone.

Would be a good timing to maybe also get some benchmarks released for the upcoming GPUs. I'm so tempted to invest in something like a 6700 XT or 6800 if the latter drops just a little more towards retail price, but who knows what we'll need to a Deckard, or how the performance of RDNA 3 will be, or their performance to power consumption ratio, or their prices & availability. Painful when you're poor and have to make so heavily informed decisions ins such unsure times.

Connecting two SoCs with Wireguard doesn't really make much sense, unless that connection needs to allow other peers to join or has to be routed over other network channels, like already existing WiFi network. If FoxNet is using Wireguard, its purpose is definitely greater than simply having two SoCs of a single device talking to each other.

On a previous video you spoke about Apple working with Valve to provide the mass market that will make high end capable displays cheap enough for Mass market... Apple usually pay to have an exclusivity lock out for 6 months or longer, so that it appears to the public that Apple invented it & everybody is copying them when the reality can be the other way around. It's this sort of thing that has made Lidar chips stupidly cheap, Apple bought an exclusivity of the chips for the phone market to so they could be used to get better photography on the IPhone. But they were first cost reduced by vehicle manufacturers offering a huge market, which forced down the price from being £/$/€×,000. Ironically, they are now so cheap that Tesla is looking stupid for not using them, when Tesla originally stopped using them due to the expense!

if Valve can get proton to work with VR apps, there's a *slight* possibility to get SteamVR games and Windows apps on the Quest, which sounds pretty cool

@Hugohopser Main FEX Emu developer is personally interested in making Steam's Beat Saber work on Linux ARM and he already made HL Alyx launch on Snapdragon (!) so that won't be a problem in the future. The real reason this is absolutely NOT related to Quest in any way is because it's a closed platform with only 1 digital store allowed. Valve cannot do anything there and won't be interested.
@Wobbothe3rd
@Wobbothe3rd 2 года назад
@@kazioo2 making a program launch is still miles away from optimizing it to run well, especially on VR. Carmack discussed in his last keynote that Occulus has always been open to allowing other headsets to use its platform, but the Quest is already sold at a loss so the business case doesnt make sense. Valve is actually one of the few companies in a position to do it, whether or not theyre interested.
