I know people who have gotten the implant, and it works great for them. Usually if you switch HBCs, you should try it for 3-4 months to gauge how it works out for you. This is the case if you're switching methods (for example from IUD to implant to pill), or even between different variations of the same method (different pills, or non-hormonal to hormonal IUD). The most effective ways for dealing with periods (especially if you're interested in extended cycle) are the pill (highly effective), or the ring (less effective at 90%, but convenient). Trying to find the one that works best for you is a tricky process for many women. Each person is different. Hell, I know someone who got a phantom pregnancy from the hormonal IUD, and others who were completely fine; others who are extremely psychologically affected by any kind of hormonal BC, and had to switch to non-hormonal options.

I had the exact same birth control only for a year, and almost end with diabetes. I was on that 30% of girls that didn't get her period, so my endocrine system was messed up because of the irregular hormonal cycle that I gained 12 kilos (almost 27 pounds) leaving me with IR (insulin resistance) that's also knows as pre diabetes. I never had issues like that before and now I have to check constantly and be really careful with my diet and birth control options.

This is stuff for people living in Lombardy: Probably Enrico had to wait for that long because he booked all the appointments at the same hospital. Just get a PIN from your local ASL and book your appointments online from your computer wherever you want. You can choose between all the hospitals and ASL available in Milan. You can see the ones with the shortest waiting list for that specific exam. Also check on google the Multimedica that is probably the best hospital in Milan. It's private but it also works with the public healthcare. Install the app salutile pronto soccorso(red icon). It's very useful if you need to go to the ER because you can see where there is less people in that specific moment and you can save hours of time. There is also an app to book appointments(green icon), but I don't like it very much. If you get the PIN you can use it to access to your previous medical exams, you can change doctor, you can see your prescription and you can also use it for other services like INPS or documents from the Comune di Milano.

Hi Tia, I used to have acne back in high school and cured it by taking a pill that was prescribed by my gynecologist (in Italy). That also regularized my period and I've been taking it for 7 years now with zero side effects. I highly recommend you to visit a gyno in Milan (you'll find an English speaking one for sure), do your blood test, and have the doctor prescribe you a specific pill based on your blood test results. Good luck xo

Hi Risa, I don't know where you're from but I highly recommend you see a reputable gyno and have her/him check your blood test. My first pill was called Diane and it worked great for me but it's really strong and not suitable for everyone. After a couple years I switched to a lighter pill and I still have no pimples and no ovarian cysts (that I used to have) at all.

I've had exactly the same experience on the same birth control, in the UK. Got it at the end of June and took it off by August, like 3 years ago. They gave me the pill too, and nothing was improving. A very horrible woman shouted on me that I was wasting the healthcare money, well, I actually didn't care, I'd have cut my own arm to take it off. It took a while to get my period back to normal. Just horrible. A friend of mine has had the same experience. Never been on birth control in Italy tho, but I was told they do many blood test, to get the combination that works for you. But here, at least in the public service, they will handle you anything you ask, without actually do any test. It seriously gives me concern.

I'm so sorry you had the worst side effects with the implant. I got mine almost a year and a half ago and the only side effect I've had is acne. It wasn't anything too bad but I do use two prescription acne medicines and my skin has been clear so far. I think I'm one of the lucky ones with this implant because I haven't had had any periods since the insertion and not even any spotting. I was watching out for mood swings and depression and I think I've been ok so far. I've ready so many horror stories before getting my implant but I also knew that every body is different. In my case, the only side effect for me is worth keeping the implant . I love the convenience of not thinking of taking a pill.

It is so sad, that as women we are subjected to so much risk. Where's the pill for men???
@rachaelcahill3035
@rachaelcahill3035 5 лет назад
It's very easy to produce contraception for women because all that needs to be done is prevent 1-2 eggs from being released from the ovaries every month, or alter the environment of the womb, and both are very easy to do, by raising progestin and estrogen the female reproductive system is very easily tricked. However, men produce millions of sperm every single day, and the male reproductive system isn't so easily tricked into stopping that production.. They're still working on it but it's just really really complicated to do, whereas female birth control is far more simple

Tia, a couple of years ago I asked my doctor about this method as well but he (an endocrinologist, not a gynecologist) told me this sets your hormones level at the same level as a women after menopause. So he told me this is good for 30-something people who just do not want to have kids anymore, totally not good for girls in their 20's. You should get the pill that works good with your natural hormone levels in order to not get super moody or experience depression. This means you should make the endocrinologist choose the right pill for you after he analyzed your hormones level, never let a gynecologist just give you the most common pill.

actually we in Italy have one of the best health public system in the world because is for everyone. when you go to emergency with something serious or for surgery, the doctors do everything they need. for example, if you break your leg they visit you and reduce the fracture, take you to the X-ray room and then to the cast room. if the fracture needs surgery they don't let you out but set you for the operation and do all the blood exam+aenestesyologist visit. even foreigners have free access to our health care. if you go with a green or red code to the E.R. you don't pay; if you go there for something really minor you have to pay according to your wealth. of course, I'm native from the South and there hospitals and public health ambulatories are not very good -with few exceptions-. now I live in Bologna and I appreciate the health system here even from a human stand point. I just wanted to explain you. To sum up: if you need a doctor for minor problems and checks (gyno, dentist, physiotherapist) is better to go private, otherwise public

Wow Tia! This is so similar to my experience on Implanon! I’m from the UK and got mine on the NHS (free healthcare). I experienced acne (especially on my back), mood swings, weight gain AND it got stuck in my arm resulting in the same traumatic, drawn out procedure and scarring. In addition, it took about a year for my hormones to go back to normal so I had irregular periods and bad acne for a further year. It makes me wonder how many other women are experiencing this without realising what the cause is. On a side note, I’m also living in Italy. I found you and subscribed to your channel when I moved here and your videos are great! Very relatable and entertaining 😘😘

I think Enrico misunderstood the steps he had to do to set his appointment at the hospital. Anyway he had to wait a bit at ER because of the "triage" procedure, since a finger dislocation is not a serious injury so he had no priority. It is useless to use private health care in Italy to fix a dislocated finger anyway. In Milan, as in Lombardy in general, Public Health System is still quite good (compared to other regions). It's must be pointed out the PHS doesn't mean totally free; in fact we have to pay a "ticket" to partecipate in the expenses (sometimes based upon our incomes) and in general is not so high; plus, every expenses, even the private health care ones, are deductable from taxation (the 19% per cent of them).

We don't use those kind of birth control simply because they have too many bad side effects. Actually, I have never understood American health system. For example, for a tooth removal they make you sleep with a strong medicine (don't know what it's called)... like, is that really necessary?

A girl I worked with at Best Buy had that in her arm and I... couldn't do it. I am a Pharmacy Technician and to me anything that can stop your periods all together or jack up your period wouldn't be something I'd want to risk. I took the pill forever but as I got older it messed with my hormones. I also have Hashimoto's (low thyroid) so my hormones are already a little weird, so throwing more hormones into my body just made me mean, I gained weight, my acne funny enough cleared up though. I'm not on anything right now since we want kids and we are almost 30!

This is so IMPORTANT : talking about birth control and, MOSTLY, side effects. I was diagnosed with anxiety problems when I was in middle school and then, like at 16, I started taking the pill. It was a nightmare, without any reasons I started felling depressed, I didn't even wanna go out my bed. The day after I cut out the pill I instantly felt happier. I just really wanted that someone would have pointed out these aspects and not just the positive effects of it.

Hi tia ! Girl, my sister currently has the exact same bc you have. She got it implanted about two years ago, and has spent so much money on feminine care products because she bleeds every single day. Every day. It took her this long to finally call it a quits, so she went it to have it taken out, only to find out that the doctor could not locate the implant. She had to go get an X-ray a week or so later, and finally get it taken out. Her situation is so similar to yours. And I'm so glad you pointed out the acne side effect. She's already battled with acne since she was a teen (she's 24 now), she was on acutane in high school, it cleared up, but had recently started breaking out crazy. The dermatologist had told her that she could break out again once the medication wore off at 23/24, but it coincidentally occurred when she got the implant. I sent this link to her today, so she's more informed. Thanks!!

Dear Tia, thank you very much for opening up on mental health, we really need to dismantle the social stigma that surrounds it. However, hearing that you've been put on mental drugs at such a young age really astonishes me. As a sufferer of major depression and anxiety from who knows when in my childhood, I've been through quite the opposite approach here in Italy. Indeed, with the exception of rare extreme cases, here you're not meant to receive any mental health prescription until you come of age, since the doctors are very afraid of messing around with the psyche of a minor who is still growing up and therefore hasn't a defined personality yet. They even tend to avoid diagnoses for the same reason, also given the normal hormonal and mood swings teenagers go through. So if you aren't an adult, you'd probably get only psychological assistance. I can understand that, but in my experience, I've been considered too young for mental medecines even way into my twenties, which led me to waste years of my life doing anything but crawling into my bed in despair and on the verge of suicide. I've been through natural remedies and silliness such as bach flowers that obviously didn't work at all against a severe insomnia, my number one depression and anxiety symptom. Of course I couldn't keep up with my studies and social life while in such conditions and I eventually was forced to quit university and never graduated. Maybe other connationals of mine have lived different experiences, even opposite from mine, I don't know, so perhaps they can't relate and I'm in no condition to speak for everybody. Nonetheless, from my perspective I have a feeling that while in the USA doctors use to give away mental meds like they were candies, in Italy they're far too cautious and risk to minimize and belittle people's mental suffering, in fact putting them in life danger.

I'm sorry but I have to correct you. 1) I'm Italian and I get nexplanon inserted in a public hospital paying 15 euros. I had to buy nexplanon because they don't provide for it, then only implant/remove it. 2) Nexplanon is the new version and not implanon. I had a similar experience but with the nexplanon! I'm an American girl in Italy as well. I had it taken out in a hospital but I think it was because of connections between my doctor and somebody in the hospital- which worked out really nicely. I had the same side effects as you, especially irregular periods and crazy depression and mood swings; I remember crying everyday, sometimes multiple times per day, and not even understanding why. After getting it removed I was diagnosed with PCOS and rosacea-- which has been on-going. The dermatologist thinks the birth control messed up my hormones which resulted in acne rosacea... And his solution was to put me back on hormonal birth control. 🤦 I've been trying to balance my hormones for the past two years, naturally, but I haven't healed my rosacea (it's usually a chronic condition). I'm convinced it was the nexplanon implant that messed me up. Thanks for making this video! Doctors should definitely be more cautious/serious when recommending hormonal birth controls, especially ones with so many negative and even dangerous side effects.

"get that shit out of me" best description ever! 😂 I had a very bad experience with the pill and I don't think that I will ever consider again any kind of birth control. I really appreciate that you have shared this with us, because a lot of people didn't talk about birth control, maybe because they consider it just "a simple, safe and easy thing" but it isn't. Three months of period? Insane, and the worst are the one that consider it normal just because "oh it's a side effect". Scars will go away Tia, thank you! I always watch your video you're fantastic! 😙

I had this implant and it was hell for me too. I got bad joint pain and had to upwards of an hour of yoga/stretching every night just to be able to fall asleep, I had intense pain after having sex, and I had the same unexplainable depression. Tia, Don't feel stupid for not getting it out sooner. I have had a hormone disorder in the past so I know what it feels like when I'm out of balance so I KNEW something was up. I even went to the doctor to get it out and my doctor talked me into keeping it. In the end I only had the implant in for 5 months because I was depressed and could not even have sex due to pain, which was the whole reason I got the birth control! Fortunately, I got it taken out with no issues, but it took several month for my body to balance out again. Thank you for sharing your experience because doctors don't always tell you everything about the birth control before you get it in.

I’ve had my implanon in for a year and a half. I’ve had just about every symptom on the list.... Nausea, headache, weight gain, vaginal infection, low libido to name a few. The worst was anxiety which I thought was from another source. I literally felt like jumping out of my skin. Lately among other side effects I’ve had joint pain cramping and mood swings. Yes I’m taking it out ASAP. It’s ridiculous what women have to go through

it's been almost two years since I'm taking the pill, and the only side effect I have(not always just sometimes) is an annoying headhacke just before my period..that's it. I know ppl that changed lot of pills because of they were gaining weight or they used to have always headhacke..I think you just need to find the method that fits you and that's it, maybe you need to try more than one before you find what's better for you and for your body. That's terrible though, what you went through just bc of a stupid birth control..But don't blame yourself for it, everything went fine at the end! people always think about birth control like it's not a big deal, it definelty is, it's not just a pill or just whatever, when something have effects on your body and most of all on your mental health, it is a big deal.. we should talk about this more. Great video as always, congrats Tia!

Ciao Tia! I don't whether to write you in English or Italian, since none of those are my native languages. But anyway, I've been under the pill for almost 4 years and I have absolutely no regrets. I've been using the same pill called Y.. (I don't know if I can mention names, specially for the younger ones). But this pill was recommended by my gynecologist in Brazil and I have literally NO side effects. Not any weight gain, no more cramps and the best thing: a 100% clear skin and back. In the meanwhile, I moved to France and then Italy, for some time and I kept buying those pills in France and Italy. The mental health issue is very important to address but even after moving to those places countries, I didn't notice any change related to the pill. In Brazil I have many friends that are very very happy with the copper iud (it's hormone-free so your skin, mood & sex drive remains unchanged), but I don't know if it is an option in Italy. But every person is different, I'm just glad I never got this kind of implant (which is unfortunately HIGHLY mediatized in America as I've seen ads in many magazines for young adults like Cosmo, Glamour...)

This story scared the hell out of me. I thought of getting this implant after seeing one of your videos, luckily you posted this one. The only side effects are more frequent headaches and yet I still have bad cramps. I hope you will find what suits you 😘

I feel your pain! Side effects from birth control are the worst. I've had an IUD for years, and it has been the best experience I've had with birth control. I know some people are afraid of IUDs but I have had zero issues and not having a period is a big plus. Lower dosages of the medicine are required to be effective, so I've been told that it minimizes reactions. There's also the Paraguard copper IUD if you're more sensitive to medications. They are great options that don't seem to get as much press as the pill.

Unfortunately I lost my insurance so I have to wait to get this out of my arm, and I can’t wait .this and the depo provera shot have been the worst birth controls I’ve ever been on. It has ruined my body and health so badly I just want it to stop. this is the same thing I’ve been going through , my doctor has had me change 3 different birth controls “to treat my high estrogen and insulin resistance that comes with PCOS “ with no break in between for over 2 years ,I started nexplanon 2 and a half years ago and it has just made everything so much worse . I bleed so much when I do bleed but I can go months without a cycle .I’ve gained over 45lbs since starting it , I was 120lbs and now I’m almost 170lbs and I’m a strict vegan (due to also having gerd) and I workout 5 days a week and can’t lose the weight no matter what I do. My wedding ring doesn’t fit anymore , my hairs been falling out, my belly is constantly swollen , I retain so much fluid , I have so much acne on my cheeks and back , and with PCOS I started it with only 8 cysts in total on my left ovary and about 5 on my right . I now have almost 16 cysts in total and due to high hormones and pressure from the weight gain I have cysts burst randomly all the time now that result in ER visits .I cannot wait to get this out of me and hopefully find a better doctor who will hopefully be more realistic and honest about birth control results , hopefully start a better method of birth control too. After losing two pregnancies I just wanted to give my body a break before we started trying again and it feels like I’ve only hurt it more with all these hormones .

I haven't had a period in the year and a half I have had it, but that is the ONLY thing good that has come from my Nepxlanon. I hate it. I have so many horrible side effects that I never had on the pill. Unfortunately, I can't take the combo pill because I have migraines with auras. My GYN recommended this one because it was my last option to deal with my fibroid, ovarian cysts, irregular periods, endometriosis, and the pain around ovulation and periods. I have the WORST acne, now. Its all over my back and face. I have insomnia, nightmares, waking panic attacks, and heightened anxiety. Never had these issues before. I am irritable most of the time. I have gained so much weight. And my drive is now zero. I have more migraines than I have ever had before. On top of that, I have more frequent bouts of IBS, and they are worse than they have ever been. So over it. This thing is coming out.

We are lucky in the UK that birth control including this implant is free and we also have loads of choices. I do know a friend that was so miserable on this birth control, she was told she could get an appointment in a few weeks for removal but she was so desperate and it was very close to the skin that she got it out herself 😣 I have another friend who is very happy with hers. It is scary that you don't know whether it will agree with you or not and if it doesn't the side effects are awful!

Hey Tia. I just recently had my implant taken out, honestly I didn't really have many side effects and I am going to get another one in. I did gain weight, which I hate but well between that and actually getting pregnant I choose the slight weigh gain. I experienced irregular periods from month to month sometimes it would be just spotting for a few days or a month at most, sometimes it would be heavy but for only a couple of days like a week at most and sometimes I wouldn't go on my period at all, all of these symptoms though were just in the first year of getting it after that I experienced a normal period every month like I didn't even have the implant on which is okay. I have a history with acne as well but the implant didn't really effect that at all I'd gave a few breakouts during my period but that's it. All in all I would still recommend this to anyone who wants something this convenient where you don't have to keep taking pills or remembering to go to the doctor every now and then

Hmm im kinda scared cos I have Nexoplan :( I have noticed that my periods have been irregular (max 2 weeks though) and I have got a bit more acne, but not much though. the worst bit about taking contraceptives though for me is weight gain. before I could eat whatever I wanted, now I have to mind what I eat as work out, which, to be honest, is something I should have done to begin with :p Also, I live in Finland so the health care is amazing here, I paid 175 to buy it and to put it in was free, since birth control procedures for students here are free, so I guess im lucky. No, "this is public italian sistem" per niente.

@tiataylor I had the Nexplanon for almost 6 months. Worst months of my life. My periods would range from 2-3 weeks with spotting. I had mood swings with extreme bloating the whole time I had it. I also had really bad acne breakouts and my skin/hair dried out significantly. I chose this method because I knew I wouldn’t be consistent with a pill and the other methods didn’t seem appealing to me. I honestly never needed birth control but I let the women in my family (mostly my mom) speak fear into my heart to convince me I made the right choice.

No, the worst side effect is the emotional lability, (Constant mood changes) the anxiety and panic disorders it gives you, and don't forget the hormonal imbalance. Those are the worst, becoming something that isn't yourself anymore . That's hell, not bleeding. I would rather bleed for 3 months straight than want to run and hide from the world that you use to not fear. Fearing that your mentally insane for months, then realizing it's your birth control is the worst . I've had to quit 3 jobs and remain jobless due to the horrid anxiety that I never had, all happening randomly one day. feelings the implant gives you is inevitable. And inescapable, and that triggers the anxiety as well .

I would advise young women who have not had kids yet (and importantly plan to have some in the future) to really tread carefully when it comes to birth control. It can be worse. X

When I was looking for a new birth control it was between this and an IUD (Skyla) but my gyno actually recommended against me getting the arm insertion birth control. After seeing this I'm glad I went w the Skyla! Good to share things like this so people can see negative reviews as well as positive.

I'm getting mines taken out because my period has been worst than before and tbh no one talks about this but it does come with a smell something that's never happened to me before with my regular period and it fucking sucks!! I want this shit out of me I don't recommend it to anyone!!!

3 years on Nuvaring. No side effects, regular period, no more pain during the period. With an app I can track when to put it "in and out". It's expensive, I know, but it worths every single Euro :D 3 anni con Nuvaring. Nessun effetto collaterale, ciclo regolare e indolore.

I have tried so many forms of birth control from the Pill to Mirena (IUD) to Implanon to the Shot. And I hate them all. Lol! The one I hate the least is the shot. I don't seem to have the awful symptoms I had with the others. The pill made me extremely sick/nauseated no matter when I took it. Mirena made me borderline bipolar (I'm not joking in the slightest). Implanon caused me to have those super long periods and depression. I constantly thought I was dying. My husband recently got a vasectomy and I am SO happy. I soon to be due for another bc shot and I am ecstatic that I don't have to go. Lol. The thing is that we don't all have the same experiences with bc, so I don't want to say that someone shouldn't try any of these. However, like Tia said, research is important. Just be aware of possible side-effects and decide if they are worth it for you. If they aren't worth it, then abstinence or condoms are best. Lol!

Was considering getting the implant [though it would have been Nexplanon] and now I'm reconsidering that. Maybe I'll just stick with the pill and order it through Nurx so I don't have to deal with going to the pharmacy every month to pick it up [though it's like a five minute walk so that's not too bad] or deal with having to go to my doctor like every three months to get a new prescription written up. :I

I wish I could love this video. I'm seriously so pissed I let the Gyn talk me into getting this thing. It was a nightmare.

Your older brother passed away? I know this wasn't the point of the video, but I need to tell you that I'm so sorry to hear that. For real. Must be so hard.

It took me ages to realise the implant was totally fucking me over too lol. I had mine for 3 years as-well. 3 years of suffering from cystic acne, anxiety, bad depression, mood swings, bad temper and I always had lovely skin before and I was always really calm before too. Honestly people it isn’t worth the fucking hassle, just try a different brith control until you find one that suits you the best. The irregular periods didn’t bother me but the horrific acne that hurt to touch and the mood swings really really got to me over the three years and now I have acne scars all over my face yayyy!!
