Before delving into the maths of the Fourier Transform, we continue with the third of three 5 minute videos on Fourier himself. After his time in Egypt, Fourier returned to France and began work on his theory of heat flow. He presented his theory in a memoir to the Paris Institute in 1807. Contained in this memoir was the beginnings of an idea which was so ahead of its time, that 200 years later it would revolutionize the way we store and communicate digital data. This idea became known as the Fourier Series.
This is the third in this series of videos which take a new and visual look at the maths behind the magic of how the Fourier Transform works. The next video will be out by 07/06/2020.

Someone give this man a budget and a slot on the telly. Looking at you, BBC4. Seriously, this is up there with the big names in science documentaries.

@@MarkNewmanEducation well if this is what you and your production partner can achieve as an enjoyable hobby, I'd love to see what you could do with a budget and a bigger team. Really, channels like yours are the sole reason I'm still on youtube.

Thanks for the compliment. I don't have a production partner. I do all the filming, editing and production work myself. Its a labor of love, I wish I was doing this stuff full time. It's taken me 3 years to get to the point of releasing this series of 6 lectures and there is still more to do. I absolutely LOVE the video medium.

I actually kind of like this quality because sometimes I tend to lose my attention on details of the video or images rather than on the main content of the explanation.

Thank you for these lectures. I stumbled onto your explanation of the cycle of fifths and wound up learning about Fourier, who was a very remarkable human being. I'm looking forward to the next lecture.

Our digital lifestyle is enabled by two giants: Joseph Fourier and Claude Shannon. We owe them greatly.

My degree is in Mathematics, and in my early work in music research, and later digital media, I've bumped into Fourier many times over the decades. I am throughly enjoying this series. Your approach (and supplemental graphical material) are very good. I'm retired three years now, and thought it'd be nostalgic to watch this series, but this series has given me a deeper understanding than I ever had when I was working with it. Thank you for doing such fine work!

I'm so glad did I have been able to deepen your knowledge in Fourier. His ideas were truly revolutionary. I always knew he was something special, but struggled to understand the Maths. These videos detail my own journey to understanding.

Mark you are such a good presenter! Perfect tone of voice, loved the way you re-phrased Fourier's original definition, and your french pronunciations. Would love to listen to some of your music!

Haha. Thanks. There are more videos coming. I've just released my latest video: (From Fourier Series to Fourier Transform - Part 1 to my Patreons - patreon.com/MarkNewman/) and I'm busy working on Video 8 as we speak. Yes questions.... it's the beginning of all knowledge. Think how many questions children ask. That's how they learn. If only we adults had the learning capacity of children!!

Enjoying this video series. Could you recommend an introductory text? I am particularly interested in the application of the Fourier Transform to X-Ray crystallography and neutron diffraction.

Dear Mark, What a superb creation! Can't wait to have the second half of the course up online! Two quick questions. First, since this shows up in this episode, I suppose that (the English translation of) Fourier's 1807 memoir is available somewhere on the net, but I could not find it. Can you share a pointer? Second, I'm quite curious what tools/software you are using to create the different visualizations (Evidently, this is not just PowerPoint + video editor) Many thanks again Moadim Lesimcha (Succot 2020)

Thank you very much for your kind words. I absolutely LOVE making these videos, I only wish I was doing this full time so I could get the course out quicker. The video course is based on a blog I wrote a few years ago which you can view at howthefouriertransformworks.com/blog/ The blog contains the bones of the whole course from "What is Sound?" all the way to a series on how the Fast Fourier Transform works. I plan to make all these into videos in time. I'm currently working on updating the blog with some new material I've learned since before making more videos. I'm very sorry to say that I have to admit to a bit of cheating regarding the memoir. I also looked for it online and could not find it either, so I "mocked" one up. The paper you see in the video is just me playing around in photoshop. That's why the text is blurred in the mocked-up article. The animations in my videos are mostly custom made (apart from the whiteboard animations for which I use VideoScribe). I love playing around with Javascript and canvases which is how I generate many of the animations. One or two of the really complicated ones on Lecture 4 for example, I outsourced to people on Fiverr.com. מועדים לשמחה.

Hi why didn't you make videos for two years?
@MarkNewmanEducation
@MarkNewmanEducation 4 года назад
I have been. I just haven't been uploading them as I wanted to release the course over some logical time period. These videos take ABSOLUTELY AGES to produce especially as I'm doing them on my own in my spare time at the same time as working for a living and raising 3 small children. The 6 lectures I am releasing now have taken me 4 years of constant work. I want to be able to release them at intervals of up to two weeks. It takes me a lot longer than that to produce them.
