Technically that is correct (which makes the video incorrect), but so is the statement that a viola is a knock off violin, because like with other things in life, knock off is just an off brand product, even though it could still be made before the on-brand product.

Usually, the reason for that is the viola and double bass are far too small for their sounds, but violin and the cello are perfectly sized. The bass gets a pass because half the time it's so low you can barely hear it, making the viola the runt of the litter. Because of its size, the viola is harder to play with grace than the violin or the cello.

They appreciate it when it's true beauty, the lower notes, come out. I give the violins full credit for sounding perfect in the higher ranges, but the viola soul starts to sing in the lower two strings. Also, each instrument should really be fitted with it's on particular string, as no two violas ever agree with sound when it comes to strings. (Says the viola queen, aka Fiddle Kat)

No viola was the first. Violin means little viola, bass comes from bass viola, and cello comes from violocello.

​@@nordahl3725 No, viola is a general italian term, used for bowed string instruments, most notably the (slightly earlier, starting in the 15th century) spanish viole da gamba (leg viola) and the viole da braccio (arm viola, starting in the 16th). These Instruments came in all different sizes and pitches. (i.e. you do not only get the bass viol, but also alto, tenore, treble) For one thing this means that these to guys are in fact violists, since the violin is actually a viola da braccio. Violino just means Viola + -ino = small viola (could therefore be any small bowed stringed instrument). There also existed the violone, which is pretty much the contrary, meaning big viola. These would have played in the bass register. (There has been contrabass violoni, but they were slightly higher than the modern CB, and would only play in the CB-register when doubling in a large ensemble. Due to the thick gut strings these wouln’t have a very good sound in this register in a small ensemble.) The Cello and the Bass appeared much later: In the 17th century the wound strings were invented in bologna, thus making it possible for shorter low strings to sound good and loud. Thus a small version of the violone could be made (the violoncello, meaning small violone), rapidly replacing the older violone in this register. These instruments got slightly lower and switched to doubling the bass register, which eventually developed into the modern contrabass.
