@tonykubik6783
@tonykubik6783 Год назад
James hits it spot on - it’s about keeping a captive audience. I bought a Vertuo machine because I wanted the convenience of the pods and the recyclability system. I had a standard Nespresso for a few years and was feeling guilty about all the plastic (I bought the cheap pods) I was wasting. I was happy with the Vertuo (when it was working - got two warranty replacement machines in the first year), but when my two teenage sons starting drinking coffee regularly, my Nespresso coffee ransom increased exponentially. The coffee itself was fine; not much variation in actual taste between the different pods, but fine. The last straw for me was when in two successive orders they cancelled the first because one of the 12 coffee pack I ordered was out of stock, then on the second order they lost it in shipping (not their fault but I need my coffee and that was the only way to get it)! So after living with my emergency French press for a while, I bought a new Phillips 3200 automatic espresso maker that grinds the beans and everything (I’m lazy about my coffee). Now I can buy whatever coffee I want and it actually tastes like a different coffee. And it is much cheaper and much better. Don’t let the $800+/- price tag stop you - the payback between that and the coffee is about a year for me over a Vertuo, and I am free of corporate subservience to Nespresso (and reducing waste).

@arevolvingdoor3836
@arevolvingdoor3836 Месяц назад
If you want a hint of sweetness, try adding a bit of vanilla creamer to the cup before brewing the coffee, just enough that it covers most of the bottom of the mug. When it brews out the coffee foam first, the creamer will mix in with the coffee foam, and stay attached to it. When it is done brewing and you mix in the coffee foam and creamer it will dissolve and mix in such a way that the creamer is very evenly dispersed throughout the coffee. I've found it to be a fun way to cheer up my morning coffee on hard days.

My office uses Nespresso vertuo and the appeal is that everyone can make their own unique cup of coffee. We also had a fancy standard coffee machine that uses coffee grounds and filters but it just wasn't as popular as the Nespresso machine. With Nespresso, you can drink something totally different from your coworkers and not have to stomach a pot of coffee that a coworker made that you might not like.

When I first took on the Rio de Janeiro contract, the Rio office had a coffee lady that used a selection of high end Italian espresso makers to make coffee however you liked, she would track your preferences and when you were expected in the office and your coffee would be on your desk as you sat down. Latee, they changed the machines to some vending like machine that you could select various types of coffee by buttons, I guess similar to the machine McDonald's started to use, they still had the lady for awhile but eventually wound up laying her off and expecting everyone to use the machine themselves. Of course the US office just had drip Bunn coffee til I brought in a Nespresso at which point every ex-pat flocked to my area, various individuals undertook the ordering of the capsules for the office themselves and as the company provided free bottled water (and sodas), we just filled it with bottled water. I still miss having the coffee lady and just magically having a perfect cup placed in front of me exactly whenever I wanted a coffee just as I thought I might want one.

I just upgraded from this machine, I got it for Christmas and I'd say it's a good introduction to espresso. Double capsules did the job for quick morning lattes. Did not like the larger coffee capsules (very watered down coffee taste). I now have a bambino and it's a big step up but also costs a lot more (double when you get a grinder) and requires more work in the morning. Pods averaged to $1 or so per coffee and the grounds I get from our local shop is maybe 0.70 per cup, so a little price savings and you get the freedom to choose what grounds you want. All in all of you want quick espresso for lattes in the morning without learning what a portafilter is - Nespresso isn't a bad choice

I'm Australian and I've had several Vertuo machines since 2017 - one at home, one at work, one spare I got while one was being fixed under warranty. I love a big mug of hot strong coffee with milk. My daughter's 'Original' capsule Nespresso machine produces a much weaker, milkier brew. Not my style. I've settled on my four favourite Vertuo mug flavours - I start the day with Intenso, mid morning it's time for an Odacio... early afternoon Melozio and after dinner a Melozio Decaffinato. I pour milk into my mug first and microwave for 45 seconds. Then brew onto the milk. Love the 3 tiers in a glass mug... it looks amazing. Always stir before drinking. Never bothered with a milk frother, that is just something else to wash and break down (the reviews aren't great). Warming the milk first means the coffee is the right temperature... and the machine crema is already 'fluffy' enough. Yeah I'm locked in to one brand of pods - and I'm ok with that. The machine is relatively cheap, quick and easy to use. Easy to clean since there is no milk in the system. I'm happy!

It has been a number of years, way back when Nespresso first introduced the Vertro into the North American market. The early machines did not heat the water sufficiently resulting in lukewarm coffee. Couple that with the bulky packaging of the pods compared to the classic pods. The machine was returned to the store. At least with the Nespreso original pod format, the patent has ended allowing third party coffee pods to the market. My impression was that Nespresso needed a new format in order to retain a monopoly during its patent.

I like the convenience of these machines, but I’m more of a latte fan than espresso (a crime, I know). All the reviews and comments on these machines only ever remark on an espresso coffee, never a latte-type drink. Can anyone point me to anything that will deal with latte-style coffees? Many thanks in advance!

@@richardking3206 this machine does do latte ones when you get the milk frother as well. but the bigger pods have that layer of foam on the top and i just pop some cold milk or some frothed warm milk in there and sometimes a bit of flavouring and it comes out as a latte or a bit more frothy latte. i would definitely buy more of the bigger pods that brew over 200mls then you get more foam!

James, I believe the "crema" on top of Nespresso capsules or Vertuo is created by adding a small amount of tapioca maltodextrin to the ground coffee inside these pods. Tapioca maltodextrin was used extensively during the craze Molecular Gastronomy period to turn any oil or oily product into a powder. Chefs were turning olive oil or peanut butter into powder and create the Wow effect they were looking to impress their customer. Believe we sold tons of it during this period to chefs and home cooks as well. Manufacturers will add this ingredient to any oily product in order to prevent the oil or fat of damaging the container in which they pack it. The addition of this ingredient is well known in the Nestle instant coffee. If you go to Greece and ask for a Frappe or Iced Coffee they will mix the instant coffee with water, possibly adding some milk, and then use an immersion blender to stir it. This will create an enormous amount of "cream" or foam on top. I believe the fast spinning in the Vertuo is basically achieving the same thing.

I wouldn't be so sure. I have the machine and I refill the capsules with my own coffee and the fluff still appears. It takes a lot less focus and energy than making a pot of coffee from beans and the results are pretty good.

This video has been incredibly enlightening in helping me grasp the inner workings of the brewing process in these machines. I've always been intrigued by what goes on inside the brew unit, especially considering how the coffee grounds appear so dense, almost like instant coffee. It's also surprising how a small quantity of grounds can yield such a flavorful result. I used to believe that air played a role in creating the crema, but this video has shown me the true "blending" process, and it's absolutely fascinating. I genuinely feel like I've learned something new today, thanks to this video. It's amazing how much there is to discover about these machines and the craftsmanship behind them. I've even attempted a few repairs on similar machines myself, and more often than not, it's the entire brew assembly that causes issues. It can be quite disheartening when sourcing specific parts becomes a challenge, and sometimes the only option available is purchasing an expensive complete brew assembly. It's evident that the manufacturers don't make it easy for us to repair these machines. Nevertheless, I admire the determination of those of us who refuse to give up and continue to find alternative solutions. It's a testament to our passion for keeping these machines running and reducing unnecessary waste. Though the path to repair may be filled with obstacles, it's the commitment and resourcefulness of individuals like us that drive us forward. I sincerely appreciate the effort put into creating this enlightening video. It has not only expanded my understanding but also inspired me to keep exploring and tinkering with these machines. Your insights and expertise are truly invaluable. Here's to all the repair enthusiasts out there who, with humility and dedication, strive to extend the life of these machines. Thank you!

Much better than instant, although that is like saying that eating a chocolate cake is better than eating an onion. Then, though, I started going out and visiting our clients. One in particular, based in Amsterdam, had a commercial espresso machine, burr grinder, filtered water, and a member of staff who was willing to take a few minutes to show me how to use it. They became my favourite customer to visit, and the Nespresso was no longer quite so special.

That ruled out a regular coffee brewer, since I don’t like throwing out half a pot of coffee if I don’t drink all of it/don’t want to keep it in a thermos. I have a chemex that I sometimes use when we have company, but it’s too much hassle to handbrew for myself once per day. I’d rather have one pod and a button. @@DrFearCo Not sure how you got that math. Nespresso pods are $1.10 each. $33 per month for coffee for 1 person, $400 per year, $120 for the machine. @@KingJerod You are delusional if you think that they are actually being recycled in any significant numbers. And most households have more than one person. And Nespresso coffee sucks... The coffee quality does not compare for a slightly larger upfront cost and break even of around 2 years and about the same amount of effort for the benefits already presented. Next step, ordering some silicone lids and seeing how well reusing the pods works out. I won't do all of the calculations you have, but I'll do a side by side taste test to see how well the reusable lids work. It's no pro espresso, but it does okay for a poor man's espresso system that is idiot proof.

I overall agree with your assessment with the "crema" and "foam". People sometimes mistaken crema for foam and they've been told that a lot of crema/foam is a good sign of a good cup of coffee. However, crema is specific. Just adding air bubbles into coffee to make foam isn't the same thing, but that's what most people associate it with so this is what we get. A layer of foam also looks good to those who are conditioned to that aesthetics. Weird.

I’m either making a cappuccino or an iced latte 99% of the time, and whatever this thing does, it makes an enjoyable beverage. I use it every day and I’ll never give it up. Ever. You can’t make me.

I have a vertuo that I got because throughout the years, I would spend hundreds of dollars on an "espresso" machine, and ultimately could never get it to work correctly or to work at all. This gives me "better" tasting coffee than a Keurig, and is so, so easy to use. I always recycle my pods and the different coffees do taste different. I enjoyed this video very much (lol, took the magic out of it), but it's still magical to get a fairly consistent nice tasting cuppa joe.

I have a nespresso mini on my desk at work. Brilliant. Decent espresso as I'm slogging through schedules or engineering calcs/designs... we got a vertuo for home (wife wanted option for full cup of coffee). The idea was variety at the ready without an entire pot. And no dumping half a caraf down the drain once cold. It works well. It's expensive to feed. I never use it. I just use my regular Espresso machine (I like the process) or a mochamaster drip/filter brewer. We're all happy.

Bought the virtuo for fast, easy, not crappy coffee. I had an espresso machine with an attached foam wand. It was loud, messy, took a while to make multiple espressos, and I hated dealing with the coffee grounds. Now I pop in the pod, pop milk in an aerator, and I recycle the pods through Nespresso so I don't feel as bad for the environment. I did recently buy a reusable, metal Nespresso Virtuo compatible pod (not made by Nespresso) and a coffee grinder. Now I can brew whatever coffee I want in the machine! I wanted a quick, easy, half decent coffee because Kurig coffee makes me sad. That's exactly what is does! I don't have to cry at the office Kurig or stop at a coffee shop on my way to work. But it's not for the knowledgeable and passionate coffee lover necessarily.

people tend to focus on the convenience of using pods and the obvious superiority over instant, but imo the hugely under-appreciated fact is that people who can't be arsed using a grinder get great pre-ground coffee when they open the bag compared to when they finish it many days later. imo nespresso's invention of "freshly opened bag for every cup" might be it's true greatness for the vast majority who aren't pursuing cafe quality

James, Great technical description of the Vertuo machine and pod system. We have owned one since early 2015 (Evoluo) convenience is exceptional, not waking up your spouse with a burr grinder at 4:30am is a plus and life saver too. Coffee taste (7-8) espresso drinks (6-7) on a scale of 10 when compared to something from a specialty coffee and espresso shop with experienced baristas driving the machines. My buddy who is very serious about espresso and coffee (more on him later) told me our Nespresso crema was not real crema rather something artificially made by the machine 😱 Now I know, thanks to James, it's merely air foam, not CO2 being released as the coffee is caressed by the perfect water, time and temperature. We are actively seeking something to replace the Nespresso machine, with locked in coffee choices, expense and environmental concerns. Really doubt the pods are recycled, who's going to open each one of these and extract the minuscule amount of usable aluminum. We figured we are spending on average $1400 USD/year on coffee pods ($1.30-$1.50 each). The machine was a relative bargain at only $200; just like the $99 printers they get you with overpriced ink cartridges. If we count coffee and espresso when company comes over, we've spent well over $10,000 USD in the seven years we've owned the Nespresso machine☹ Bravo Nespresso, marketing genius. Looking at Super Automatic machines that cost $1000-$3000 USD, I read a mixed bag of reviews, you're dipping a toe into the world of "real" coffee and espresso. Those machines don't always produce a great cup of coffee or espresso (according to reviews) many require extensive maintenance or breakdown within a year or two even when properly maintained. The Nespresso machine is still going strong after seven years, no issues minimal cleaning and essentially no maintenance required. I have a friend that roasts and grinds his own beans also has a $5000 Italian espresso machine hard plumbed in his kitchen, I don't want to take the time or commitment to make the ultimate cup of espresso or coffee, just something as good or a little better than the Nespresso. I've spent way too many hours researching a solution, late nights on the computer going down the "rabbit hole" learning about Group-Head, Crowding the coffee, extraction pressure, temperature, pull times etc. and the pros and cons of different machines, listening to people say they love their drip coffee or Keurig pods to the extremist aficionados like my friend the bean roaster. Help!!!! has anyone (I'm sure there are thousands out there just like us) found a suitable replacement and escape from the Nespresso prison? Many Thanks, Jeff

Hey James, first time hearing of this machine but do have some physics experience (bachelor’s). I just want to help you understand pressure and how this thing works. Pressure is force per unit area. So the centripetal force absolutely would create a pressure. You’re right that confining a force creates an increased pressure. The way to think of it here is to imagine a regular espresso machine. Now make the bottom of the filter basket rounded out like the pod and force water in from the center of the top. This would still brew (maybe a little differently but that’s not important). Then, instead of forcing the water in, just let it come in through a tube to the bottom at just enough pressure to make it back up through the coffee to the top. Get the basket spinning fast enough that the calculated pressure is equal to 9 bar. Replace the filter basket with a plastic pod. This is the idea behind pressure in the spinning pod.

I’ve had the Virtuoline for 3 years. The coffee is delicious, the crema dissipates after a few minutes and I’ve mastered refilling the pods with either Recaps foils or Press and Seal from Saran. Caution- the stainless steel pods are tough to use and can result in machine failure probably due to excess pressure. I tamp the pods with medium pressure and then lightly sprinkle a top layer. Your analysis of the machine was far more extensive than I could’ve done. Well done.

Nice to see your view. I have a few friends that wouldn't do without that machine. Personally, I think it provides a decent cup of coffee when I visit those friends and a big step up from a Keurig machine or a cheap coffee maker. I would never buy that machine for myself because I prefer my own home brew from fresh ground beans at a fraction of the cost and I prefer a little real cream over foam. Yeah you'd get that fake crema with a blender, but if I'm about to work a few minutes on a drink I'd rather craft a much more interesting drink like a macchiato or a cortado or something fun. I think for the amount of work you need, this machine gives you the most interesting results. As a lay person who loves the original nespresso-system, the "why" of vertuo seems obvious. Nespresso must hate how other brands steals their customers by making cheaper capsules for the original, so that people buy those instead of the actual nespresso capsules. With vertuo, there are no competitors, and I am guessing because of some patent on the bar-reading on these capsules or something. This theory is strenghtened by the fact that nespresso gives away vertuo-machines from time to time, if you buy 300 vertuo-capsules. They want you in their vertuo system so that you are stuck buying expensive original capsules. That said, the product might very well be good. It might even fit som people better. But as for the "why", those are my thoughts.

While lock-in was no doubt on the minds of some at Nespresso, another "problem" to solve, was the American market. Particularly the American office market. Which was/is pretty much entirely owned by Keurig. Americans simply wouldn't go for tiny pods making exclusively tiny cups of coffee. Vertuo is, conceptually, a tour de force as an office machine. Or at least would be, if they were as reliable as Keurig machines.... No need for anyone to know which button to press for "their" size. No need for two pods to get a desired size coffee (or 4, to get a Starbucks sized one....). No need to worry about whether a pod is ground for a "Lungo" sized cup or an "Espresso" sized one. Just intuitively pick the pod of the size and type you want, and the machine does the rest. No coffee knowledge required. All very intuitive. And the coffee is good (weird foam or not). Nestle may not be every 3rd waver's favorite company, but they have some serious combined Coffee IQ on staff, and more resources than anyone. A $200 pod machine won't come equipped with James and his Decent hidden away inside, but just like with their original line, they pick and roast and grind and package remarkably good coffee, given the limitations of the pods and machines they have to work with.

As someone that has tried various different coffee making methods and experimented around a lot. My expectations are quite high for coffee. And like James here, I find that many of the Nespresso coffee flavors to be very similar and tend to go for the cereal notes. I am kind of happy to see that over the years they have come up with at least a decent amount of coffee flavors that are pretty unique and different and pretty good to drink. And after I've gotten so use to drinking espresso. While Nespresso's coffee isn't quite as good as using an actual espresso machine. It's still pretty good, because compared to even the most expensive Keurig coffee machines. It is sooooo much better, Keurig coffee tends to be just waaay too watered down and not that strong. So as much as I love using my Breville BES840XL. There's days that just don't have the time to use it, especially when I'm working a 12 hour shift. So the convenience that Nespresso brings to the table is great for when you need it sometimes. And thankfully I have found a few of their coffee's that I really like and fit my preference. I just hope that over the next few years as they experiment around that they can really nail down a few different flavor profiles. Because with how different everyone can be with how they like their coffee, I would love to see everyone find something they like. Because the Nespresso pods can be a little pricey, so people may not use it everyday. But it is pretty nice to have for special occasions, or if you are in a hurry sometimes. I really do feel like the majority of coffee drinkers can benefit from having a Nespresso machine. Maybe I'm just strange, But I usually once a week fill up 2 (well sealed) ice cube trays with espresso. And that is after I use my hyperchiller to make it ice cold in the matter of minutes so then I can make it into cubes quicker while maintaining most of its flavor. Then I use my Nespresso machine throughout the week to make some coffee, then pour it into a cup with some coffee cubes so then it can get ice cold really quickly. Just gotta make sure that the coffee cubes I made and the Nespresso pods have a very similar taste profile. And it usually turns out great, saving me time, money, while getting that *spark in flavor from the cubes. It somehow manages to satisfy my needy @$$. lol (High coffee expectations)
