A huge thank you goes out to the folks at The Animal Park at the Conservators Center ( animalparknc.org/ ) who not only sent us fantastic footage, but also sent Hank a jar of binturong smells: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-6OfMWVLgyFs.html
One time, when I was at the zoo and I saw a sleeping binturong. Because of the position that the binturong was sleeping, my brain went "binturong ?" And when I looked at it again, my brain went " monkey ? ".
Trivia for you: Borderlands 3 has a gun in it called the Bearcat. The flavor text for it is "I love the smell of popcorn in the morning." Had to explain the reference to my friends
@@pangetpampam8272 probably, but this is the only one I can think of off the top of my head because it's so specific. The series has hundreds of special named weapons like this. That said, Destiny 1 had a set of spikey arm armor called the "Thagomizer"; the technical name for stegosaur's spikey tail weapons
I'm pretty sure the binturong was conceived from the mind of a kindergarten. It looks like a bear, but it's dog-sized. And it has whiskers, like a cat! And, it has a long tail.... like a monkey! Oh, oh, oh! And, teacher, teacher, its pee smells like POPCORN! * breaks out in maniacal laughter *
@@ChrisJBT2 you mean, venomous mammal.. a plant or animal is only POISONOUS if you consume it and whatever toxins it naturally has eventually messes you up
By far the best part of this channel is the unadulterated enthusiasm that hank and sarah deliver these bizarre beasts with. You can just feel the childlike wonder radiating off of them
I now know what animal Chowder is from Cartoon Network's animated show, Chowder. He is a Binturong. The characters in the show even describe him as a bear-cat thing and no one is able to identify what he is exactly. Thank you Hank. Thank you Bizarre Beasts. You have solved a decade old mystery.
Binturongs have always been my favorite animal, I saw one on an exotic animal segment of a talk show as a kid and thought they were so cool. I got to meet, hold, and feed one at a wildlife conservation center a few years ago. She climbed on my shoulders and wrapped her tail around my neck for security, but was very gentle. Seemed like she would have been content to eat banana chunks out of my hand all day long! She did smell like corn, kind of a musky smell more than an appetizing smell. Definitely a top bucket list item checked off!
SHOUT OUT TO THIS VIDEO FOR BEING THE WAY I DISCOVERED THAT CRASH COURSE ORGANIC CHEMISTRY EXISTS. Hank, you are single-handedly saving my life right now
I too loved the chemistry mini-dive. Especially since while I like popcorn well enough, it's basmati and jasmine rice I really dig. The evolution machine does like to reuse handy building blocks like that. Fascinating stuff.
The binturong has been one of my favorite animals since childhood. I grew up in San Diego and the first time I saw the binturong exhibit at the zoo I became obsessed. It's a "bizarre" question to answer in an icebreaker group. "What's your favorite animal?" "the binturong"...followed by people's confused faces.
Exactly what I had at work😂😂😂 then mentioning the popcorn scent... Had to go on RU-vid to show everyone otherwise it was "right no made up animals" 😂😂😂😂
A friend I have been TRYING to get to watch this series (I’m so close!!) and I were just talking about the Binturong because...her school’s mascot is the bearcats!! I cannot wait to send this to her.
I live in Indonesia. My parents owns a farm, and there are a binturong family lives who lives in the area. They have adapted to people so much that they actually live as one of ours. Now we feed them regularly 😂 they are super adorable!
@Poor Quality Gameplay you can when they are tame enough. But I won't advise it. One time a binturong bit me so hard, it won't let my hand go for quite some time. Thank god his fangs did not pierce my skin too deep. I got a full series of rabies and tetanus shot after that.
At the zoo I worked at a few years back, we had one .. and it does smell like popcorn. Housing it next to the prehensile-tailed porcupine that smells like a foetid pair of running shoes in which the socks have rotted away made for an interesting experience.
@@Sara3346 I've only worked with the Prehensile-Tailed ones, and North American Porcupines.. and while they don't smell great, but nowhere NEAR what the PHT's do. Like, not even remotely comparable.
i wish you'd talked about the etymology of the name "binturong". obviously english-speaking people saw it as a cross between a bear and a cat or weasel, but how did the people who named it originally see it?
Some say that the meaning of “binturong” has been lost as the native language it comes from is extinct. Adds to the bizarreness of the beast in a way, but very unsatisfying
it’s from malay, I’m a malay from Malaysia and we call it multiple names like menturung, menturun, binturung and tenturun which all may have been taken from the word “turun” which means to go down like how the binturong goes climbs down from trees, bear in mind it is formally called “musang binturung” in formal standard malay, musang meaning civet a type of creature often mistaken with foxes here....... thus musang binturung would mean something like “descending foxes”
In Vietnam we had something very much like that, but smaller, gray, and locals called it a "Banana Cat" but it didn't smell like popcorn. It was a mortal pain in the ass, as it would sleep all day and raise hell all night. Every morning, at least one of the guys would threaten to shoot it. Thank you for your information on the binturong.
Binturongs are adorable! Last time i went to the zoo, i saw one navigating some branches in it’s enclosure and then it saw us and misplaced its paw and fell. It got distracted and tripped over itself and that was really cute for some reason
I saw them in person like a decade ago, visiting relatives in the Phillippines. I got to hold one in the Palawan Wildlife Rescue and Conservation Center for a tourist photo. They're really fluffy and warm! I completely forgot the name of the little guy, so this was quite nostalgic! But I didn't smell the popcorn, mostly musk, I guess I was lucky to not have it pee on me during the photo.
University of Cincinnati's sports teams are the Bearcats but that had nothing to do with binturongs, it was born from a joke while playing the UK Wildcats. Cincy was overjoyed to find out there are actually critters called bearcats and the local zoo got one
It was quite a shock when I followed the scent at a zoo and there was a sign that said something along the lines of “sorry, that’s the animal ->” I also noticed that my hamster as a kid also smelled like popcorn.
I remember you used to (in the vlogbrothers bizarre beasts) include the different variations of the pins at the end. I know there's always a common, a less common, and a sparkly, but I like to see the different versions. And it'd be nice to confirm that I got a non-standard variant! My binturong has red plants in the background.
i seriously CANNOT get enough of the quips he makes....but the fact that both hank & sarah are both soooo utterly animated with their explanations and unapologetically sarcastic with the humor is the best bart of this series and why I'm absolutely binge watching every one since I came across it about 5 or so hrs ago :D I've been pacing myself bc once I watch them all and there's no more ... I think I'll sulk while trying to find something else to watch lol
LOL I'm going to have some interesting thoughts next time I eat basmati rice after that. Thanks, Hank, for yet another enthusiastic dive into the weird and wonderful.
My alma mater’s mascot is the bearcat (University of Cincinnati) so I immediately recognized this bizarre beast! They’d often bring out Lucy, a real binturong from the Cincinnati Zoo, to games or events :) This summer the zoo did a series of “home zoo-fari”s that would each feature one of the animals, and when they featured Lucy I remember the zookeeper mentioning the popcorn smell in the video. I’m glad your video went into more detail about the compound responsible for it! I’m a big chemistry nerd and I thought that was awesome 🤓
The bearcat is the mascot for Northwest Missouri State University! Loved being one of the few who knew what they looked like and that lovely popcorn smell fact.
We always said if our greyhound, Cobble, were a different animal he'd be a binturong: they both lay around in the sun snacking all day, they're both black, and both smelled good.
I love this series but I really wish y’all would focus on conservation issues a bit more! Binturong are trafficked for pets and medicine, and are impacted by deforestation.
Too bad I didn't see this 2 years ago. Some years back the two of us went to Minneapolis on a weekend trip, and one thing we did was visit the Minnesota Zoo, and at that time they had a binturong on exhibit. Yes, its enclosure gave off a funky sort-of-buttered-popcorn odor. While I was looking at the animal, some kid ran up to see and his mother grabbed his hand, complained about how bad it stunk (hey, it's a zoo, lady) and dragged her son away. Sigh. I don't see binturong listed in the zoo's website now, but it's been quite a few years since that day (probably about 10 or so). Still, what an unusual animal to have at a smallish zoo.
Ok, so that dialog was way too much fun!!😂😂🤪🤪And the little beast was completely new to me, had heard of the other folks in its extended family but not the binturong. So win/win, fun and education ! Your presentations really make this program rock!! Even when you're subject is popcorn scented pee!!🤣🤣🤣
The binturong definitely just looks like someone painted a red panda black, and gave it a seal face. The Kinkajou, on the other hand, is clearly just a chihuahua that got stretched out and grew super buff.
I love binties! They are such delightfully weird looking mammals. I made up a song that I sing every time I visit the binturong in the San Diego Zoo -- "It's been too long,/ Since I saw you, Binturong!" I ALSO love buttered popcorn jelly beans. If human pee smelled buttery, I bet a lot more of us would have water sport fetishes...
Ahh I'm so happy I saw this. I remember Hank saying he was making it into its own show. But I totally forgot 😭 but now I won't have to wait a whole month for a new episode! 😁
This just sounds like a pokemon. Popcorn smell and likes fruit, make it grass type. Cute looking, unfamiliar but also familiar (think eevee), so easy design to throw there.
I did a paper on prehensile tails for school recently, and the binturong came up a few times. Fun facts: you'd think they'd need more muscles to work their prehensile tails, but compared to their close relatives that is not the case, what they do have is proportionally more flexors. Also, their tails are similar in proportional length to their close relatives, but they have way more bones, to increase the flexibility. YOULATOS, D. 2003. Osteological correlates of tail prehensility in carnivorans. Journal of Zoology 259:423-430.
Aah how amazing! I've only learned of Binturongs a few months ago but this was really cool to see and hear more infos because it's such a cool animal :3
While I do agree that reducing maternal mortality is very important, wouldn't it be more fitting to donate the profits to an organisation that prevents rare and endangered "bizzare beasts" from going extinct?
Hank and John made a plea to collect some big amount of money for Partners in Health, and only after that the Bizzare Beast pinclub started (originally on Vlogbrothers chanel), so they just linked it with the biggest cause they support.
@MsBlulucky why don’t you make a video for Project 4 Awesome on behalf of an organization that saves rare and/or bizarre endangered creatures? That would be most fitting.
Love this! But I have a quick question, a QQ if you will... Don't possums have prehensile tails as well? If the answer is no, then I'm going to need another BizzareBeasts episode explaining the definition of prehensile tail.
Ok, I have just spent 20 minutes trying to figure out the etymology of this thing. Here's where I'm at: Turns out, there are several different names for it in Malay as well. One of them is 'musang turun', which breaks down into 'civet' + 'climbing/going up'. So, a climbing civet. The part that means 'climbing/going up' is 'turun' and it turns up again in the alternate name: 'tenturun' , which isn't that far away from 'binturung' So what we know is that the name has something to with climbing, but as for the other part of the word, be that a root or a prefix, I have no idea what it means. If you know, please let me know.
I remember seeing this animal for the first time on the show Going Wild With Jeff Corwin on the Disney Channel. (Back when Disney was awesome.) Anyway, I had the pleasure to see this amazing animal in the small Ararat Zoo at the Ark Encounter.
Funny thing: The paws of puppets sometimes smell like popcorn - without the butter. I don't know the smell of buttered popcorn. We just use salt. Alternatively, it is the smell of someone cooking jasmine rice.
Has anyone investigated if red pandas are closely related to binturong? There's a lot of morphological similarities, and even a bit of geographical and diet crossover too.
That makes so much sense Visiting the enclosure of Binturons in Pairi Daiza in Belgium, the whiff of popcorn was overwhelming. At the time, we just thought some of the other visitors ate popcorn qroumd this enclosure 😐
I thought they looked more like a raccoon. I showed it to my almost three year old kiddo and asked them what they thought it was and they said, "It's a racooooon!"
They always climb to our house's roof at least once in three months and proceed to pee above there. Yes, their pee is smell sweet, but later it will turns out blah a day later. They are blood enemies of our neighborhood cats 😂😂😂
